I have been listening to the Daily Audio Bible this year, working my way through the Bible in a different way. Brian Hardin is the one who reads the Scriptures most days.
Even though I already recognize some of what reading through the Bible in a year can bring to one's life, I still found some insights that I found intriguing and were thought-worthy.
1. The comparison of the devil seeking to destroy Christians to a lion hunting a herd of antelope. Waiting for them to run, and then some to fall behind. The importance of the community of believers and taking care of each other. Of not dropping out of a community of believers.
2. The comparison of a wild goose to the Holy Spirit, as in Celtic symbolism. Of listening to and following the Holy Spirit, and the image of a Wild Goose chase. Of not looking "normal" and maybe even a little bit crazy to those not in the chase.
3. That as we follow God's will for our lives, and seek Christ, our faith and our lives may not look like "western" Christianity. This is something that's been tugging at my heart - of what believers in Christ should really strive for - and this part of the book gave me more to think about. Sort of a 'yes, you're on the right path there' feeling of affirmation as I and my husband seek what it is the Lord wants of us in this season of life.
All in all, this is an encouraging read for a believer seeking to grow in Christ. I recommend it.

I have a very "sketchy" background with religion. So my understanding of the Bible is virtually non-existent. But I'm getting to a point in my life where I'm ready to start understanding and building a relationship with God through the Bible. I'm not going to go into any of the details about my background, but I do feel I should let you know that about a week before I received the invitation to do this book tour I had started looking for a Bible and was ready to start reading it. So this book couldn't have come into my life at a better time. My review is going to focus on this book, but I do want to mention that the schedule to read the Bible within a year given in the back has been a great guidance for me. It's put together in such a way that makes it not so overwhelming to read the Bible. I've been following it for a few weeks now and I have to say I really like the way it breaks things up. If I got nothing else out of this book, I got that.
Brian Hardin has put together the Daily Audio Bible in which he follows the schedule from the book and reads the Bible through a podcast. This book focuses on how he started the Daily Audio Bible and how his life (and others) has changed from having the Bible as part of their lives everyday.
He uses a little humor, a little emotion, and a lot of experience to explain how reading the Bible everyday can make a difference in our lives. It's not a book that just says "go read the Bible because I said so". It's more along the lines of "when you're ready to make a commitment to the Bible here's a good way to do it. And if you don't think you're ready for that commitment here's reasons why you might decide to change your mind." It wasn't pushy, it was just him telling his story and sharing his experiences with the Bible in his life.
I think my favorite parts are where he shares a message from one of the people who belong to the Daily Audio Bible community. They all give a different reason for starting to read the Bible, and yet the results are all the same, they've changed on a spiritual level. It's very inspiring to say the least.
I really liked his presentation and I am glad that I was able to read this one. It's given me a focus and direction on something I was ready to do anyway. Hardin is able to share his experience in ways that make sense to me. He has the ability to get on paper what is going on in his head without it being confusing. Being a reviewer I know how hard it can be to get the words you want to materialize, and so I respect that ability.
Overall a really good book that left me chomping at the bit to get to my Bible each time I picked it up.

After struggling to read the Bible regularly himself, Brian Hardin, in his book, Passages, is given an insight from the Lord to start the Daily Audio Bible. This was not his desire at the beginning. In fact, he determined not to be involved with ministry from early on as a preacher’s kid. He, instead, immersed himself in the record industry for ten years.
After extreme exhaustion from long hard days of work and little time for his family, God got his attention and whispered in his ear about podcasting the Bible on the internet, starting January 1, 2006. Little did he know the blessings and peace that would come from his obedience and the ministry that would open up to the world.
Brian’s book is packed with testimonies, wisdom and insight into the blessings of reading and obeying the Word. He’s quick to let anyone know it’s not hocus pocus magic, but a real relationship with God. With all honesty, he can say that everything in your life will change in ways you never imagined if you read the Word daily. He doesn’t suggest that life will magically be perfect, but you will have peace and hope in your life.
A verse that sticks out in my mind that he includes about all Scripture is that it’s:
for gaining wisdom and instruction, for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young. Proverbs 1:2-4 Also see 2 Timothy 3:16.
Brian lists the four steps of Lectio Divina: Divine Reading, which is a tried and true method of hearing from the Lord:
Lectio: Read
Meditatio: Meditate
Oratio: Speak or Pray
Contemplatio: Contemplate or Rest
Brian also talks about the power of the spoken Word. After reading about the spoken word as enumerated in the Scriptures, it’s taken on a whole new meaning for me. (Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Roman 10:17) We have gotten used to the printed word, which the lay people didn’t have for thousands of years, and tend to read it quietly by ourselves. I agree that there is power in the spoken Word as demonstrated by the Lord throughout the Bible, though reading it alone isn’t wrong. But there is much to gain from community reading and studying.
Brian also gives practical wisdom in taking the time to read, study and obey the word, with an emphasis on community for accountability. He gives you guidelines in getting started in the epilogue section. They are practical and vital for spiritual growth.
Included in the back are three different Bible reading plans:
The Daily Audio bible Reading plan that includes Old and New testament reading.
The Chronological Bible in a Year where you follow the timeline of how events occurred.
The Historical Bible in a Year, reading the books in the order that they were inspired.
This is one dynamite book to open your eyes to the wealth of blessings when you read the Bible regularly. There are more practical and spiritual insights in this book that cannot be enumerated in my review, but have touched my heart. This is a book you will not want to pass up!

I don't know how I have gone this long in the Christian blogosphere without hearing about Brian Hardin and his Daily Audio Bible community. But at least I know now, and all I can say is wow! This is the story of the journey that Brian Hardin has been taking through the Scriptures since 2006, and it is well worth the read.
As I read this story, I was impressed with the wonderful way Brian Hardin wrote the book and truly made the Bible come alive. So many times we tend to put the Bible on the backshelf, and Hardin had done that himself. When he accepted the ministry that God gave him, his life changed in unbelievable ways. He prayerfully wrote this story, and I believe that God gave the very some words that so encapsulated what the Bible is. The Bible should be like a friend to us, and we should lovingly seek it. After all, how can we know who God is without reading His Word?
I loved the fact that Hardin included so many real life stories from people whose life had changed as they made Daily Bible reading (listening) a significant part of their lives. And it was amazing to see a man who used to only care about music and women become an instrument of God who has touched so many lives. This is a short, powerful read, and it was well worth the read.
At the end of the book, he has Daily Bible reading plans you can follow, but for me, I am going to go check out his community. He challenges his readers to read the Bible for themselves, and it is clear that your life will change for eternity. I am a regular Bible reader, but even I have had times when I did not take my daily devotional time seriously. He has inspired me to return to my love of Scripture, and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

We run from thing to thing, trying to juggle life, job and family.
What could make a difference?
For Brian Hardin, the different in his life came when he quit reading the Bible in "chunks" but instead, really dived into the words.
Savored them and let them settle into his life, as a "daily" meal, rather than something for a special occasion.
In Passages, Hardin outlines how reading the Bible throughout the year has made a difference in his life. He also shares how his ministry, Daily Audio Bible, came about.
The book also includes three reading plans you can use immediately,
I enjoyed reading this book. It a way, it wasn't anything I didn't already know. I mean, I tell my students about the importance of reading the Bible, and truly letting the words soak into your life.
But this book maybe serves as a simple reminder of what Christians need to remember. I'm also intrigued by his daily podcasts of the Bible passages.
It's also an engaging tale - almost a spiritual memoir - of Hardin's journey of discovery.
Truly, Hardin wants people to experience the Bible in a variety of ways - auditory for the listening learning styles, and by reading it, for the visual learners.

I read Passages in two days. As soon as I read the description, I was hooked. I can't tell you what an incredible book this is. I have read many books on this subject, but Passages is in a league by itself.
Brian Hardin begins by explaining how he came to read the bible everyday. He gives his testimony in Chapter One entitled "The Olive Couch". Chapter Two talks about the reasons why we don't read our bible. This was one of my favorite chapters.
Our number one excuse for not reading our bible is lack of time..
"Time is always an enemy. Reading Scripture is always on our perpetual to-do list; but as the day goes by, it ends up at the bottom of the list, and by the time we fall into bed, we're just too exhausted to read anything that requires serious thought." (Page 32)
Can you relate? I know I can because I struggle with this myself. The other is understandability which Brian Hardin discusses as well.

Growing up Catholic, I have listened to Bible readings very often and can even say that I have read most or all of Bible. I took a class titled “Bible” in high school and attend Mass most Sundays. There was a joke that circulated around my grade and high schools, we called the people who only attended Church on Christmas and Easter “Chreasters.” Now that I am older, I realize that the name is not funny. People who rarely come to Mass are missing out. Brian Hardin’s book is a great way to return to faith and feel good.
Passages is filled with quotes, personal stories, and resources to help people find their way back to God. The book helps you become a happier person and make changes that will improve your life. I believe I am a more forgiving person because of this book. Passages reminds you that you are not alone and gives you tools to improve your life.

I listened to this as an audiobook, which in my opinion, is the best way to read it.
It is read by the author himself, who is also the founder of the Daily Audio Bible podcast. He is very easy to listen to and the book is relevant to the majority of Christians who may have a whole bookshelf of Bible's yet rarely pick one up and read it.
In this book you will find Brian addressing the need for Christians to get into the Word and discover that in it is the power to change lives.
I highly recommend it to all Christians of all denominations and walks of life.

The book was very interesting. I personally enjoyed it, however I am not sure if I would recommend the book to someone who doesn't listen to the daily audio bible podcast. While the books message is really good and really well laid out, it seems so connected to the story of the daily audio bible (a podcast that I have listened to on and off since 2006) that some of the story's may be lost to other readers of the book.

This book was a great guide for how to get daily Bible reading into your life. It gives tips on how to make it enjoyable, so you don't have to drag your feet to get reading! It also have a few different reading plans for how to start reading through the Bible in one year. For me, this book helped to discourage my dislike of the Old Testament parts of the Bible that I find boring and tend to want to skip. If you're having any doubt about reading the Bible consistently, check this book out!

Wonderful book. I listened to this as an audio book. I love Brian & the Daily Audio Bible. He has a voice of genuine peace & comfort & speaks with unwavering clarity.
This book is so much more than the sum of its parts. This book is a must read (or listen) as is the Bible (the DAB is essential listening).

Passages were written to remind Christian believers to never forget the power and impact of studying and reading the word of God. Brian Hardin is also the founder of Daily Audio Bible. He has created a website and he has a podcast in which he reads the Bible aloud every day for a whole year. It's has grown into a massive network of believers. I personally will admit that I don't read my Bible every single day. I tend to not allow enough time throughout the day to fit it in reading and meditating on my Bible. The Bible is meant to be devoured daily and applied not just when I can schedule out some time for it! The book has shown me the importance of scheduling time in reading the Bible at the beginning of the day. Putting it off doesn't enrich my life in fact it just hinders my growth towards a deeper relationship. I realized that I have been "dating" the Lord instead of committing to an authentic personally relationship. This book will open your eyes as it has mine to the abundant life that the Lord wants you to live.
I loved how Brian Hardin was transparent and he openly revealed that when he read the Bible for a whole year his life started truly changing. He felt more peaceful, hopeful, passionate, and joyful in his life. One aspect, he believed readers of the Bible aren't doing enough of is reading the word in context. They are picking and choosing the verses and they are not receiving the whole picture. But the story reveals the background of how everything was created to be. He also described one way many believers choose what to read in the Bible. How many of us haven't at some point flipped through the Bible and tried to land our finger on the verse or chapter, we thought God wanted us to read? I will testify that I have done this very thing many different times when I was looking and longing for encouragement or a word from the Lord. But what happens when your finger comes across the verse like Matthew 27:5. The verse says," And Judas went away and hanged himself." Where is the inspiring and enlightenment of that? Hardin's point was how does that assist you if you don't know the whole story behind the hanging. I immensely enjoyed the encouragement and the motivation Hardin displayed in order to convince readers to make the time to grasp the whole picture of the Gospel. Reading the whole Bible through story by story impacts and changes your life in a greater way!
I liked how the book contained three different helpful daily reading plans, "The Daily Audio Bible Reading Plan", "The Chronological Bible in a Year", and "The Historical Bible in a Year", to convey the magnitude and the power of reading the Bible on a daily basis. This book will help you to notice and see the importance of reading your Bible daily. I have decided that this is something that I am going to start to committing to do. Will you be joining me?

I immensely enjoyed the encouragement and the motivation Hardin displayed in order to convince readers to make the time to grasp the whole picture of the Gospel. Reading the whole Bible through story by story impacts and changes your life in a greater way!
I liked how the book contained three different helpful daily reading plans, "The Daily Audio Bible Reading Plan", "The Chronological Bible in a Year", and "The Historical Bible in a Year", to convey the magnitude and the power of reading the Bible on a daily basis. This book will help you to notice and see the importance of reading your Bible daily. I have decided that this is something that I am going to start to committing to do. Will you be joining me?

July 15, 2012We’ve all made that promise to ourselves, the New Year’s resolution that this will be the year that I read through the entire Bible (And yes that does include Leviticus and Numbers!) and after a few weeks or months we give up trying, making excuses to why we do not have the time or opportunities to continue reading the Bible daily.
Brian Hardin has written with a passion for why we need to sink our teeth into the Word of God and not just by reading the Bible daily but my listening to it, by becoming a part of a community while studying scripture. He takes the time to help each of us understand why we cannot simply read the Bible to in order to check it off of our daily list of chores but how we must interact with the Word and take active part in it.
Hardin uses not only his experiences but the experiences of others to share how engaging in a daily Bible reading/listening schedule will change you from the inside out, how making the time to dig into the Word will change who you are, who your family is and will build your relationships with God.
Through this book we are invited into a daily transformation that comes only from God. Hardin has given the motivation by not telling us that we should be reading our Bible daily but he shares his passion and understanding to why we should each take this step and to understand how the Bible is not another thing to push aside in our schedules and how it is a daily life changer for each of us.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
This is a life-changing book, one that every Christian should read! I have read through the Bible a few times, but sometimes I felt like I was reading just to get through the passages, not enjoying them and getting the full effect of reading God’s Word. After reading Passages, I have more motivation that ever to get in my Bible and read it. I won’t promise faithfully that I will sure take this challenge; because sometime promises are broken, but I am going to do everything I can to make this a yearly challenge. And keeping this book to read along with reading my Bible is a must! Thank you Brian Hardin for a wonderful tool, and a strong challenge to have a daily relationship with God’s word. I really never thought of is as a daily relationship, but putting it that way makes it even more desirable to want to read!

Passages is the first book I am adding to my bookshelf. I can't express how much this book means to me and more importantly, the message of the book. I have read and re-read this book, and each time the truth contained resonates deeper within me because I, too, have experienced first hand that reading the Bible in a year (I'm on my 5th year through with the Daily Audio Bible podcast) changes everything that means anything.
Read this book if you're like me (a highlighter) or listen to the audio book if you enjoy reading that way. Either way, the central message of the book is that The Bible is the Living Word of God, and that is the basis for transformational change in all who would take up the invitation to drink deeply from scripture.

I love Brian Hardin's simply profound look at how and why we should read the Bible. It is God's love story about us! It is the "living" Word because it is continuing to live in us and through us. It is a book that never becomes outdated or irrelevant to our lives. It is a portrait that was begun thousands of years ago, and is still being painted today. I also love how Brian talks about the importance if the spoken word. It's true; words are alive. Thank you, Brian!

As a long-time listener to the Daily Audio Bible podcast,
I believe Brain does a v ery good job of describing the originas and meaning of DAB. He also does a good job of personalizing the book with his own experiences and insights. Though there isn't much new here regarding the Bible, it should prove interesting and motivational to those new to the faith and/or to the Bible.

While I have yet to finish the book, we hand out this book freely to anyone attending our C3 NExT class. at times it felt like one big advertisement for Daily Audio Bible. but it really teaches how ALIVE the word of God is and how important it is to immerse ourselves daily. feel like you don't have time to read the Bible? read this book.

I enjoyed the not-so-stuffy approach to the topic, yet seriously discussed important aspects of the impact of Bible reading can have. This was very encouraging and challenging to me. I'd recommend it.

I really enjoyed listening to Brian narrate this himself. Daily Audio Bible has been such a blessing to me. I enjoyed hearing more of Brian's story and learning more about the history of hearing books out loud.

This book is well written and readble. The intended audience, I believe, is new-to-faith, and seekers. A must read, must gift for anyone not sure if the Bible is for them.
