Sooriyarachchi has done it again! Really, she is amazing with her child narration. I love this book! I just bought it for a niece of mine for this Christmas and I'm glad I did.
The story is told from Chandu's side, a Sinhala boy around seven. Thamee is a little Tamil girl around his age who has arrived from Jaffna. Thamee's father is an engineer supervising the building of new tank in the village. They soon become good friend, despite their language barrier, learn about their religions, cultures, and most importantly: About the Food.
There is obvious rivalry between the two mothers. Chandu's mother has lost her brother due to war and believe Tamils are dangerous and Thamee's mother has lost her son due to war and and believe Sinhalese are dangerous. But the time will bring them together and they are to learn how good neighbours they both have found.
This is a wonderful story to give to a child, specially living in post-war Sri Lanka.
