টিনেজারদের জন্য পারফেক্ট বই। এইখানে আছে আত্মমৈথুনের ইতিহাস নিয়া আলাপ, একটু পর পর সেই বিষয়ে সেই সময়ে লেখা কবিতা, আঁকা ছবি। আছে চমৎকার সব সোর্স থেকে উদ্ধৃত করা বাণী, রসিকতা।
এইখানে আছে যুগে যুগে পুনরাবিষ্কৃত আত্মমৈথুনের উপায়, প্রক্রিয়া, ডিলডো এবং বাকি যন্ত্রাদির বর্ণনা, নামকরণ, ব্যুৎপত্তি ইত্যাদি নিয়া আলোচনা।

No matter the prurient interest that the title of this book will inspire nothing can prevent it from being one dull and boring read. Maybe that was necessary to impart the author's point of view and information but it makes the book a failure as far as I am concerned. As a 'cultural' history one would have thought that some level of cultural sophistication might be in order. It wasn't and this was just a dull book, I found it frustrating and annoying and a waste of time.

Kirjan otsikko on rehvakkaasti itsetyydytyksen historia, mutta oikeastaan tämä ei ole historiankirja. Hajanaiset ja pitkälti kirjoittajan omiin havaintoihin perustuvat käsitykset jostain ilmiöstä eri aikoina eivät riitä tekemään kirjasta kattavaa historiateosta aiheesta. Aihetta olisi pitänyt tutkia huomattavasti laajemmin, sekin olisi auttanut, että käytetty aineisto olisi analysoitu monipuolisemmin ja järjestetty paremmin. Toinen vaihtoehto olisi ollut koota yhteen historian eri alojen tutkimustietoa itsetyydytyksen historiasta, mutta sitä ei paljon ole, joten se ei liene ollut mahdollinen tie.
Van Driel on urologi, siis lääkäri. Se näkyy: sujuvasti hän käy läpi lääketieteellisiä tosiasioita etenkin miehen itsetyydytyksestä. Aivan hyvin kirjan olisi voinut jättää lääketieteelliseksi katsaukseksi itsetyydytyksestä. Sillä tavalla se olisi ollut hyvä ja tietopaketti aiheesta - tämä kun on aihe, josta edelleen riittää lääketieteellisiäkin harhakäsityksiä.
En voi uskoa, että 2010-luvulla ilmestyneessä tietokirjassa puhutaan henkisesti jälkeenjääneistä. Termi ei ole ollut käytössä enää moneen kymmeneen vuoteen, nykyään sitä pidetään erittäin loukkaavana, mutta niin vain tässä kirjassa käytetään tätä käsitettä. En tiedä onko vika käännöksessä, enkä osaa alkukieltä, että voisin luotettavasti tarkistaa, mutta epäilen vahvasti. Olen muutamasta muustakin kirjoittajan asenteesta eri mieltä, mutta mielipide-erot ovat erikseen, ne täytyy vain hyväksyä. Tämä termi taas ei ole mielipideasia, vaan loukkaavaa kielenkäyttöä.
Käännös on valitettavan heikko. Teksti vilisee kömpelöitä rakenteita ja outoja sanavalintoja, jotka lienevät suoraan alkukielestä. Käännös ei kuitenkaan kuulu teoksen suurimpiin ongelmiin, vaikka se teki lukemisesta huomattavan hidasta.

An entertaining look at "walking the lonely road" from a cultural standpoint, including toss-offs on art and social aspects throughout history of the titular titillation. Let's be frank, we all do it and van Driel makes no bones about it, approaching the topic with aplomb and airy humor even when looking at its weirder psychological angles.
Great sections on dildonics, frequency, Egon Schiele, sexual treatments for the masturbatory "madness", and butt plug statuary.

Я согласен с теми читателями, которые называют эту книгу скучной. Книга действительно очень скучная. Более того, книга выглядит компиляцией статей или даже постов в блоге. Возникает ощущение, что автор просто собрал воедино всю информацию, которая хоть какое-то отношение имеет к рассматриваемой теме. Другими словами, эта книга не воспринимается как настоящая книга. К примеру, автор зачем-то включил (в книгу) небольшие главы про мастурбацию в животном мире. Зачем? Но, пожалуй, самые скучные и самые длинные главы посвящены теме медицины. На тему, как медицинское сообщество рассматривало мастурбацию в 18-20 вв., уделяется больше всего внимания, однако эта тема (глава) оказалась для меня самой скучной и неинтересной. Плюс автор, зачем то полез в детали и даже решил привести цитаты из медицинской литературы конца 18 века. Как по мне, так это было явно лишнее.
Если смотреть в целом, то книга содержит чрезвычайно много глав, которые очень короткие (небольшие) и очень поверхностные. Всё это вместе просто не позволяет создать в голове цельную картину темы мастурбации в социуме. Слишком много "рваных" и коротких тем и слишком они разнообразны (даже в контексте одной основной темы).
Второй недостаток, это отсутствие какого-либо обзора по другим странам. Хотя даже обзор ситуации связанной с мастурбацией в странах Запада дан невероятно поверхностно и скучно. Автор сосредоточился в большей степени лишь на медицинском сообществе и мира искусства и литературы (поэзии). Я хочу сказать, что в книге практически ничего не сказано о том, как на мастурбацию смотрели и смотрят в обществах Европы и США (к примеру, как относятся к ней в разных социальных стратах).
И последнее. Автор включил в книгу главу о секс-игрушках, однако она очень относительно связана с обсуждаемой темой и фактически эту главу можно было не включать в книгу (или не включать в том виде, в котором она написана).
Как итог, несмотря на отсутствие других книг на данную тему, эта книга не заслуживает внимания даже с учётом этого факта.
I agree with those readers who call this book boring. The book is indeed very boring. Moreover, the book looks like a compilation of articles or even blog posts. One gets the feeling that the author simply put together all the information that has any relevance to the topic at hand. In other words, this book does not feel like a real book. For example, the author, for some reason, included (in the book) small chapters about masturbation in the animal world. What for? But perhaps the most boring and longest chapters are on the topic of medicine. The topic of how the medical community viewed masturbation in the 18th and 20th centuries gets the most attention, but I found this topic (chapter) to be the most boring and uninteresting. Plus, the author, for some reason, went into detail and even decided to quote medical literature from the late 18th century. As for me, it was unnecessary.
If you look at the book as a whole, it contains an extremely large number of chapters that are very short (small) and very superficial. All this together simply does not allow you to create in your head a coherent picture of the topic of masturbation in society. There are too many "ripped" and short topics, and they are too diverse (even in the context of one main topic).
The second shortcoming is the lack of any overview of other countries. However, even an overview of the masturbation situation in Western countries is incredibly superficial and boring. The author focuses more on the medical community and the world of art and literature (poetry). My point is that the book says almost nothing about how masturbation was and is viewed in European and US societies (for example, how it is viewed in different social strata).
One last thing. The author included a chapter on sex toys, but it is very relatively related to the topic under discussion, and this chapter could have been left out of the book.
As a bottom line, despite the lack of other books on the topic, this book is not worth reading even with that fact in mind.

A good book and I liked the author's verbose writing style. The author cycles through biological, evolutionary, psychological and cultural accounts of masturbation and its social perception through history. I agree with his conclusion that its marginalisation on purely cultural grounds in the past is unfounded and expect to find an increasing number of studies concerning the impact of the porn industry on masturbatory habits.

A nice overview of history, media and culture relating to masturbation, though nothing groundbreaking. The writing style was humorous and enjoyable.
