Good Night Room Nine: A folkloric ghost story

Rate this book
First place winner of The Pencraft Book Awards for Supernatural Fiction. Gold Medal winner of The Global Book Awards for Ghost/Horror. Full-stack developer Jenny Novak wishes to kindle a connection to her Eastern European ancestors by first meeting with her estranged grandfather at his home in rural Slovenia. Wanting to savor the wilderness, Jenny opts to stay at a shady bed-and-breakfast that was once used to breed and sacrifice dogs to an ancient entity. If she knew this, she probably would’ve kept driving.

Spending one terrible night at the Crossroads means navigating a shifting maze of hallways, portal-like rooms, and a creeping fog that grows ever-thicker. Jenny meets a veritable cast of eccentric guests while avoiding a ritualistic serial killer who is desperate to keep the old tradition alive.

"Good Night Room Nine" is a gripping occult thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. With its pulse-pounding suspense and supernatural elements, it's a must-read for fans of horror and mystery alike.

★★★ 3/5 - An Atmospheric but Challenging Supernatural Thriller
"Good Night Room Nine" has an intriguing premise blending Eastern European folklore with modern horror elements. The story follows Jenny Novak, a developer seeking connection with her heritage in Slovenia, only to find herself trapped in a sinister bed-and-breakfast with a dark history of ritual sacrifice.
While the book has garnered awards and shows promise with its unique setting and folklore-based horror, it presents some challenges for readers. One notable hurdle is the frequent use of Eastern European place names and terms that can be difficult to pronounce, which sometimes pulls the reader out of the story. A pronunciation guide would have been a helpful addition to keep readers more immersed in the narrative.
The atmospheric elements and the concept of a shape-shifting B&B create an interesting backdrop, but pacing issues make it challenging to stay fully engaged. The story tends to meander, causing the tension to dissipate at crucial moments. While the inclusion of eccentric guests and a ritualistic serial killer adds layers to the plot, these elements don't always mesh seamlessly with the main storyline.
The book's strengths lie in its original concept and integrating Eastern European folklore into a modern horror setting. However, the combination of difficult-to-pronounce terms and uneven pacing can make it hard to maintain focus throughout the story.
This is worth reading for horror fans interested in folklore-based supernatural thrillers, but be prepared for some pronunciation challenges or at least for me, and narrative meandering along the way.

described as a “love letter to ancient gods and foreign lands,” GOOD NIGHT ROOM NINE by Cody Ray George is an occult thriller novel following Jenny Novak and her trip into the Slovenian countryside— as she attempts to hold tight to family ties, and gets a little bit lost along the way… it’s a gripping read with some major unsettling horror vibes— and wow, it definitely provides some pretty kickass nightmare fuel!

my rating: 4 out of 5 stars

i really enjoyed this quick read! we meet some pretty great characters during jenny’s stay in this bed-and-breakfast, and getting to explore their lives was an absolute adventure. at times the story seemed to be caught between being a “true mystery” and a “true horror”— and i wish it had felt like it settled into one or the other! overall a very intense story with some great atmospheric world-building, perfect for fans of David Lynch!

thank you so much to cody ray george for sending me a free copy to read and review; as always, my thoughts are my own! i couldn’t resist showing off the stunning back cover too— swipe to check it out!

The mere mention of Slovenia is likely to conjure a beautiful image of the dreamy Julian Alps, the deep blue Adriatic Sea, and charming old city streets. However, the supernatural thriller novel “Good Night Room Nine” by Cody Ray George takes readers to an ominous bed-and-breakfast in the Slovenian wilderness, which transforms into a foggy playground for occult practices and human sacrifices during the night.
