Based on a Brothers Grimm fairytale called The Frog Prince. A princess loses a golden ball in a pond, and the Frog Prince retrieves it for her under the proviso that she will take him with her to the palace and be his friend.Every new generation of children is enthralled by the famous stories in our Well Loved Tales series. Younger ones love to have the story read to them. Older children will enjoy the exciting stories in an easy-to-read text.
My favorite version of the tale Princess and the Frog; they don't make them like this anymore. The illustrations are beautiful; beautiful dresses, jewelry, furniture, etc. It's books like these that made me feel like a princess when I was a little girl. (Well-loved Tales) has the brunette and blonde version of this story. The other version is here on goodreads, this is what it looks like- ["br"]>["br"]>
The frog helps the beautiful princess recover her ball fallen into deep water, but his help is conditional. In her eagerness to get her toy back, the princess agrees to the terms, which she quickly abandons when she has her ball again. The frog hasn't forgotten, however, and the princess's father takes the side of the frog when he learns of his daughter's promise. This story is similar to Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady. Instead of an ugly old woman being married to a handsome young knight, you have a beautiful young princess forever forced to share her bed and food with a disgusting frog. But this is a fairy tale after all, so we need not fear for the princess too long. Cute story!
Ladybird Tales give a history of these fairy tales, old as well as fairly recent. A real treat for this booklady.
Rating mostly for the illustrations by Ruth Palmer, one of the best artwork for this fairy tale I've seen, which otherwise isn't my favourite Animal Bridegroom variation.
Brought us back wonderful memories of my Mum's childhood, you just cant beat the old style ladybird books with their gorgeous illustrations. they just don't make them like they used to!
In this version, the frog says he will retrieve the Princess's golden ball if she will play with him, eat with him, and sleep with him. Of course, her father forces her to do all these things. When the frog gets into her bed, he turns into a prince and then later they get married.
On the one hand, I am glad my son was exposed to this traditional story. But on the other hand, who wants to teach their kids that it is okay to force a girl to sleep with a frog???? And it was weird how the frog turned into a prince in her bed. Freaky.
The illustrations are breathtaking, Ruth Palmer is a genious!!! As for the story, we know it very well. I've always wondered why the frog doesn't make himself loved somehow, why the girl only pities him, and only marries him when he turns out to be rich and beautiful... This is like life... I imagine a beggar speaking to a girl in the metro, she turns him down, then she drops her keys into the tracks, he picks them up, but the girl turns her back on him, etc. And when he turns out to be Elon Musk, she marries him. Like yeah.
Sebelumnya nggak suka Princess and the Frog soalnya kebayang gelinya kulit kodok, terus malah dicium lagi. Tapi di cerita ini beda. Malah mengajarkan gimana kita harus memegang janji yang sudah kita buat.
This book told the classic tale of The Princess and the Frog and included detailed illustrations on every page. It taught the reader a lesson about being kind to those who help you and keeping your promises.
I thought this story was very cute and meaningful. The story gave great detail about what some relationships are like in real life, and how some have fairytale endings. I think young kids would adore this book, especially younger girls, who like princesses. Kids can learn a great deal of life morals and lessons from reading this story. I think a great activity to do in the class would be to have the students imagine being a cartoon character and falling in love with the man/women of their dreams, and see if they have a fairy-tale ending, then share it with the class.
The 4* star rating is pretty much for the sublime illustrations. This is another fairy tale I adored as a child but now I'm that much older, makes me feel decidedly icky. Yes the moral about keeping your promises is an important one but now that I'm a lot older, the whole marrying someone you've just met bit gives me the heebie jeebies.
Added 2/12/24 - I've just re-read this book again and the Princess irritated me no end🤬🤬
A blast from the past, The Princess and the Frog was one of the staples of my childhood. A cute book that I recommend any child/adult-with-a-love-of-fairy-tales, read. Can't wait to locate the other Ladybird books I remember and read them! :)
