FUN FACT! This volume was supposed to be reprinted but DC backed out. COWARDS! But I’m going to pretend that it was printed as it’s on Goodreads and mark my reading notes here.
Issue #5 “I don’t get it Charlie…since when did Bigfoot star plantin’ dynamite?”
I have been proven quite mistaken and although the last issue was a bit of a low point, this issue kicked everything right into gear. Although we did get more of a focus and expo dump on the JSA compared to infinity inc page time, this was still a very enjoyable issue. We pick back up with the JSA members seemingly dead and infinity inc trying to deal with bureaucracy behind proving relations to a hero without unmasking.
The little town where they found themselves is begging to do an autopsy, that is until Jay Garrick arrives to give them the heads up on what he thinks is happening. Around that area in an all star comic they dealt a mystical stream of water that appears to drown people without drowning them, but due to the substances in the water, once they wake up they act on all their worst base desires. That’s a pretty good way to get the JSA and infinity inc to fight. I absolutely love that merging of the two groups stories and experiences, especially when it refers to some obscure comic.
Also turns out Obsidian is a major catholic, seeing one of characters express that, especially in their super hero gear, can make for some very striking visualizations.
Well the JSA woke up in an even worse mood than the drugs would have made them either way, as the state decided to move forward with the autopsy without permission. Pissing off a very pissable off Wonder Woman leading to an altercation with a few of the infinity inc members. While that’s happening star spangled kid and junior find ultra humanite where the JSA bodies were found. Finally get a glorious look at that albino gorilla jerk.
Also I really like the Infinity Inc profiles at the end and I hope they keep doing it. Seeing that Jade is not just a drama student but has a 2.6 gpa is hilarious.
Issue #6
Pretty good issue, infinity inc is kicking it into gear and trying to stay ahead of the bloodthirsty JSA members. But also, according to his profile obsidian wants to be a mechanical engineer, that’s cool.
Going back to the main story, obsidian is actually the one to save the day when Nuklon almost died to a green lantern saw trap. It’s almost like obsidian infected the green surface with his shadow and weakened it enough for jade and the others to break it apart.
We got to go back over to power girl, who in the last issue actually left because a dome formed around metropolis (basically a normal Tuesday) and Superman was no where to be found. I’m excited to see their fight continue next issue. Of course now we know Superman was only evil because ultra exposed him first to the waters and used him to lure and infect the other JSA members for revenge. Everyone else figured that out from Jay, but kid and junior found out the hard way with an altercation with ultra humanite, where he supposedly set up a bunch of traps and controls already. You gotta be kidding me!!
Oh and we got to see huntress take on Dick Grayson, as his first evil idea was to go and kill the man who killed his parents. This interaction taught me a few things about earth 2. They don’t have Arkham and instead have an apparent effective prison. But I guess it’s easy to hold joker when he is at least 60. And I also learned that Earth 2 Dick is a lawyer! Huntress actually takes a pretty brutal beating before she can knock Robin out before he kills the geriatric 90 year old former crime boss. But she prevailed!
Issue #7
Not exactly sure how ultra humanite is watching everyone. Somehow he knew about the conversations between Robin and huntress but then is watching the news for everyone else? But overall this issue we got some more exciting fights between the older JSA and infinity inc. And it is providing quite a challenge for the infinitors to hold back against the older crew.
Power girl is getting absolutely bashed down by Superman in this issue. A Superman that isn’t holding back is not a Superman you want to be cornered by. No matter how much pleading she did, she could not get to him. If we are lucky the effects had on him should run out first compared to everyone else.
Then we got to see Fury, Scarab, and Northwind fight against Wonder Woman and Hawkman as they both attempted to steal a new Egyptian artifact. Hawkman because he is a nerd and WW because she is looking for immortality. Of course hawkman turns on WW at a moments notice in a quite hilarious turn of events. Turns out earth 2 WW cannot break man made chains. Not sure why that is, kinda ridiculous. But he also coated the handcuffs he picked up from Gus the guard with nth metal. Same thing that lets his wings fly. So she now has chains she can’t break and is floating towards space. That’s comedy gold. And she would have gotten there too if Northwind and scarab didn’t get her first.
Which of course lead to a fight between the group, ending with Steve Trevor showing up at the last minute and accidentally taking a hit from WW. Injured…possibly dead. It’s revealed at the end in WW’s distraught state, that when her most selfish desires are put forward first. She is still only trying to help other people. As the immortality wasn’t for her, but for Steve.
Also I hope these infinity inc files are being kept somewhere safe. Geez that’s a lot of personal info on the members. Especially for huntress.
Issue #8
Wonder Woman rushes to take Steve to paradise island to help him heal faster than a hospital and no one is able to stop her. No man can step on paradise island you say? Screw that, he doesn’t have to touch the ground! There was actually a teen titans issue where Gar was brought there to be healed and did not touch the ground lol, LOOPHOLES!
Meanwhile Alan Scott takes over all the air waves, making information gathering useless unless calling, and apparently he will take that soon as well. But it appears Ultra Humanite doesn’t have an issue, especially given his supplier. THAT’S RIGHT! Turns out the monitor supplied ultra humanite of all things with equipment? That’s super out of character, but it’s funny to see how characters integrated crisis in small ways before it kicked off.
Wildcat and Nuklon team up to track down Atom after getting a lead from Nuklon’s mother, that there is a site testing with the same material that gave atom a power boost. Wildcat gets immediately taken out by Atom’s super strength and Nuklon ends up taking a full blast from the radioactive material Atom wanted to get blasted with. Right before atom smashed him with a boulder sized mesh of computers. Will Nuklon die from radiation poisoning or will his unstable body take it on and become even more powerful!?
Oh also! Dr. Midnight my favorite doctor and the retired hawk woman and the local sheriff all marched out to where the drug filled river could be as Midnight has an antidote. And what did they find? Well possibly the first step to Ultra Humanite’s little console room.
Also funny to see that power girls birthdate is irrelevant to earth standards. That’s fair lol.
Issue #9
“Such philosophical concepts as good and evil make effective human prods, don’t they? Or perhaps I should say, cattle prods…”
And brainwave Sr. may wonder why he isn’t close with his son…
The next issue will wrap up the generations storyline, and this one kicked things into high gear. Apparently star and junior were snagged by brainwave sr, into limbo just before the avalanche took them. So hopefully they will make their way back in time.
I had no clue starman’s device was called the star stick. Come on dude…you had all the choices in the world. And unfortunately that starstick was no match for an obvious trap. As starman defeatedly floated back to Earth, obsidian and jade put up quite the fight with Alan Scott. Jade attempted to match Alan one for one when it came to projections, with Alan just barely getting the upper hand each time. But ultimately obsidian took the fight when he completely covered GL’s power in darkness and psychically reflected Alan Scott back into himself. But it was also around this time the effects of the water started to wear off. Causing Alan to retreat back to Earth to try and get his next kick.
And as he did, so did the others. Other than Dick of course, as he is currently locked up in the bat cave. But I’m not sure what’s worse. That Dick acting like a junkie would make Alfred cry, or that Alfred thought after Bruce died, that the thing Bruce would want most from him is to stay at Wayne manor and continue being a butler…wtf Alfred! Go live your life!
Other news, Nuklon is alive. His powers seem to be adapting to radioactive energy in odd ways. I wonder if this will come back in some way or if we will see his powers evolve.
Hawkman escapes and power girl preps some Kryptonite for another confrontation with Superman, as everyone heads to the place for the final battle: The source of the waters and where Ultra Humanite has Hawkwoman, Dr MidNight, and that sheriff hostage up in the snowy mountains of Colorado.
What happened at the end though! No I’m not talking about a tease that a human life will die next issue. I’m talking about them forgetting to put scarab’s file. DANG! I wanted to know why he chose silver instead of turquoise!
Issue #10
Infinity inc and the generations saga at its core has always been about legacy. The heroes to take over from the big timers from before. And this issue showcases that 10fold. It’s the ultimate showdown. All the pieces are in place. Humanite has the JSA in the palm of his hand, and before he continues to drug them and use them to take over the world, all they have to do is kill their legacy.
But the infinitors are also ready, albeit with a little bit of guilty sass from Scarab. I mean geez he really laid it in on Northwind for no reason. I’m glad Northwind is such a nice guy. Nonetheless they are ready and come crashing into humanites lair only for things to immediately go bad for them. The Kryptonite power girl brought us immediately used against her and huntress goes down. But that actually levels the playing field a bit for the first half. Let’s the infinitors mix up who they would usually fight and get the upper hand through the abilities the JSA is somewhat unknowledgeable about.
Jade attempts to trap Superman in a bubble. Nuklon goes blow for blow with WW. Same with Fury and Atom. Obsidian even attempts to psychically take over ultra. And scarab and Northwind take on Scott and hawkman respectively with minimal results. That is until huntress gets back into the fray and can immediately throw a Kryptonite fastball to a Nuklon that can now have objects pass through him, right before Superman takes a literal tree to jade (wood remember). With these actions the fight is turned on its head completely and that wood ends up right against Alan Scott. TEAMWORK!! As more JSA goes down, this leaves more infinitors to work together to stun the JSA members.
Only leaving Ultra Humanite, who is ready to enact plan B: releasing the rest of the waters and drugging infinity inc to be his pawns in the process. BUT, just as he releases the water, brainwave and junior work together, along with Stars power, to drag everyone into limbo. In a final act of bravery and protection for his son, brainwave senior mentally fights Ultra, ultimately giving his life. But in the process giving more power to his son. Who is not only able to defeat ultra, but also get everyone back. It’s a beautiful moment of Brainwave effectively passing the torch to his son to be better than he was. And I don’t feel bad at all about the regressed state that Ultra went into.
Issue #11
This issue felt like an all star comic slapped in between 5 pages of infinity inc. as we see the aftermath of brainwaves body being taken away, and mention of humanite being shoved in a deep dark hole somewhere. Wonder Woman may still take Steve to paradise island after his near death, and scarab seeing brainwave sacrifice himself is actually deciding to be a nicer person! Especially to Northwind! Finally! Now if only Alan can figure out who he slept with lol! Then we see the true start of infinity inc, as even after all the troubles with the JSA and bringing them back from destroying the world, they are still deciding to start their own team with the star spangled kid instead of going to the JSA.
“From now on, the world will have to make room for both Justice Society of America - - and for Infinity, inc.!”
But the bulk of this issue actually followed star spangled kid and a story where he rekindled his friendship with stripsey, his old sidekick. Starting with a secret funeral anniversary with the remaining members of the soldiers of victory, other than stripsey, at the grave of the crimson avenger. The story continues as Star goes directly to stripsey to see him. This is where he also finds out that stripsey fell in with a bad gang and built a pretty unstoppable armored car for them to use, and try and rob Vegas casinos with.
The mere presence of star sets the mobsters off and in the commotion they end up taking Stripsey’s son hostage so they don’t have any trouble. Of course this causes more trouble for them as Stripsey and Star team back up, and suit up, to take their old flying car, more like jumping car now, to take out the criminals and get stripsey’s son back safe and sound. They are ultimately able to win because the goons left the 6 year old in the armored car, and guess what!? Stripsey’s son can drive!! HAHAHAHA!! I absolutely love the seven soldiers of victory, they are such an obscure team but have a great group, but this story didn’t help establish where Star got the idea for infinity inc. Other than just continuing to be a hero.
Issue #12
“All in all I think it went rather well, don’t you Nuklon?”
“As opposed to what? The maiden voyage of the titanic!”
This entire issue followed infinity inc as they attempted to host a news conference as Los Angeles’s first super hero team. And every bad thing that could have happened, happened.
First Jade and Obsidian decided to show up in a run down compact, when Jade can FLY! Because scarab was supposed to pick them up, but Fury and him were a little too busy getting “engaged” and slept in. Then a bunch of protesters barged in against the super team, specially because of Nuklon and his radiation connections. So Nuklon had to explain to them the difference in radiation that gave him his abilities and the kind that blows up cities, all while establishing he is the dumber one of the group and doesn’t really have an opinion on nuclear energy.
All the while during their first press conference they lost 3 members. Huntress and Power girl are not ready to join and would rather stick with the JSA on the east coast. And brainwave also needs to find himself after his father’s sacrifice. And if his lashing out at the crowd is any indication, that’s probably a good idea.
But the worst of all, turns out ultra humanite is back in a revenge state and leaked to the press the secret identity of silver scarab. This prompted scarab to reveal his identity to the world as all of the other members followed suit. I think that is so interesting to have a super team, where right out of the gate everyone knows who they are, that’s usually such a dangerous thing and I am interested to see how it will impact them.
Then they got a bit of a visit from an old GL foe: the harlequin. She also showed up a few issues ago before jade and obsidian confronted a brainwashed GL. This event prompting the twins to think she could be their biological mother. But she also doesn’t look old at all, but also has the ability to project images that aren’t there. Such as the ceiling caving in or thinking you are closer than you are. So maybe connect the dots on that one….
Issue #13
There has actually been some payoff from issue 11, it reintroduced star’s flying car that the infinitors apparently have full access to use whenever. And in this issue, Nuklon, Jade, Fury, and Scarab decided to go to a secluded island they could only find on JSA maps. WHAT COULD GO WRONG??
Well what could go wrong is if it turns out there is someone on this island, named Rose, and has a whole lot of mystery surrounding her mental state as she tries to piece together her dreams that seem an awful lot like memories. Dreams where she has a sister and are working on a secret botany project. One that turns one of the sisters into an evil plant like creature called Thorn! Who guess what? IS STILL ON THE ISLAND! And decides to terrify the infinitors until they are able to beat her and drive her away, before they get Rose back in the morning and take her with them. According to the editors notes at the end, Rose and Thorn are the same person, which was something we were supposed to realize already? Gonna be honest it crossed my mind but with how different rose and thorn look and the dreams showing 2 different people…I didn’t. I understand rose is a bit unreliable though, so it makes sense. Can’t wait for the infinitors to figure that out LOL!
Issues 14 - 18 and Annual 1 continued on individual issues as I did not have enough room to put notes.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
For any comic book reader who doesn't know 'Infinity Inc' the I think I would describe them as a massively improved version of 'Teen Titans' for Earth 2, without the silly "mini-JSA" connotations of the latter (Aquaman is Aqualad, Batman is Robin, Wonder Woman is Wonder Girl, Flash is Kid Flash - sorry pathetic imo).
Enough ranting - Thomas's writing here is excellent an wonderfully full of character for Infinity Inc but this storyline, and it went on over TEN issues and included the JSA, is first class. The artwork is certainly 'of the period' but excellent even for that.
Loved these two books, recommended for a comic book reader looking for something new.
The second volume didn't have the same cohesion as the first volume. The first volume really utilized the JSA to support the characters and their identity. That said, the second volume was much more fun. Seeing the team of their own was more fun.
