John Yeoman was for many years Head of English at the French Lycée in London. His collaboration with Quentin Blake began in 1960, and has resulted in a long list of successful children’s books of which a number of earlier well-loved titles are now being republished by Andersen Press for new generations of readers.

I wish this book had started with an introduction. It was hard to tell if these were Yeoman's takes on traditional folk tales, or if he was just making them up whole cloth. Some of the stories were so gruesome (characters being killed for not obeying simple rules, and one particularly shocking beheading!) it would have been nice to get some context. Are they ancient stories in the vein of the Brother's Grimm? I hope so, as it would somehow make some of these stories a bit easier to take.

The illustrations by Blake are, as the title implies, amazing.
