Was the author previously writing Young Adult's fiction ? I kept wondering that while reading, as the main characters's (27 and 30 years old) behavior is without any doubts immature and juvenile; yes it's redondant but their behaviors throughout the story deserve that.
The writing itself is ok but not great : the language is a bit too familiar for my liking, there are lots of repetitions, as if the reader was too stupid to remember. Last detail, all but one of the French recipe names included grammar mistakes.
Anyway, the main problem with this book comes from the characters :
Brian is almost OK, behaves with sense and consistence : he's quite confident and satisfied with his life, just feeling a bit overworked; he'd also liked to have a significant other and create a family, though does not really know how to do that - understandable considering he dated one girl from 18 to 28, almost married her, and worked intensely in the past years.
Thinking of the heroine, Reese, the adjectives that come to my mind are the following : immature, juvenile, irresponsible, whining, self-deprecating, unsatisfied, spineless, so passive, obedient, stupid, insensitive... Yes nothing positive. She's having a Bridget Jones syndrome without having any of the former's fun and humour. She also does not have any friends. She's one of the worst supposedly funny heroine I came across in romances and chick-lit combined.
The last character I did not like was the heroine's mother : invasive, domineering, bad-mannered, major PITA (sorry but that's the best description...). And nobody ever really opposed to her any time. I cannot believe she never received any setdowns sufficient to question her outrageous and selfish behavior.
My first and most probably my last book from this author.
