An account of Dan Gilvezan's time working on the original Transformers cartoon. Lightweight, and admittedly padded (did we need an episode guide in the back?), but a fun read with some neat anecdotes. Fans of the original cartoon should appreciate this. (A-)
(Note: Despite Goodreads listing this as an audiobook, the ISBN - and this review - are for the print edition.)
I love the transformers ever since I was 13 years old when I saw the first film. Since then I've been getting into the G1 show and the other shows that came next. Dan Galvizan (hope I spelled his name properly) gave a great blast from the past in his own point of view about his character and with the other VO actors. I'm keeping this book from now on.
A must read for any G1 fan… short and easy read filled with so many anecdotes of G1 recording sessions from someone who seems truly glad to be part of the Transformers legacy. Bumblebee was and most likely will not be one of my favorites, but to hear all the stories about the voice actors and their antics was great. Plus Optimus Prime played polo
Super short book. But it is filled with great behind the scenes of the production of Transformers. I liked it. Anyone interested in Transformers should read it.
For all you Transformers fans out there, this is a must read, amazing, can't-stop-it's-so-good book. This book was written by Dan Gilvezan, a.k.a Bumblebee as us fans know him by. As the title suggests, Bumblebee & Me: Life as a G1 Transformer, it's about his hilarious, tragic, and just plain weird times as part of the cast for Transformers tv series. There was no slow start in this book, Dan got right on it with his beginning tryouts for the soon to be new Transformers tv series. For those of you who don't know what Transformers is, it a show about autonomous robotic organisms from the planet Cybertron in an ongoing civil war between, the bad Decepicons, and the good Autobots. Thats really all you need to know to enjoy this book. Well anyways, He starts out at tryouts for a new show that didn't seem, at first, that it would get more than three maybe four episodes on air, especially with a voice director like Walter Burr. Now, if you read between the lines (Or the title) you can easily guess he gets the part. What most of the book centered around is his amazing “adventures” with the hilarious Scatman Crothers, Frank Welker, and more in a little recording booth. As I stated before, any Transformer fan would eat this book up, but this would not only appeal to that audience alone. No, this book may be useful to any wishing to go into a voice-over career, Dan Gilvezan does give out some pretty good advice, and gives you a good picture of a normal recording day. Bumblebee & Me: Life as a G1 Transformer was hilarious, to make it an even better experience I recommend buying it as an autobook, he actually reads it (also the books uncensored, so watch out). This book just gives you an overview of what goes on during the time and may even teach you some history, the fun way.
I really rather enjoyed this book. It is essentially a telling of Dan Gilvezan's time working with the transformers cartoon series over the years. it is pretty much limited to The Transformers.
Also of note, the audio version is available via Audible cheaper thant he paper or eBook edition. It is also read by Dan Gilvezan himself. Considering he does voice work for a living, I have to say it is excellent to hear him doing the read and even if you don't really do Audiobooks, the Audio version of this book is probably a better experience than the print edition.
Also of note, it's pretty short. The audiobook was something like 90 minutes.
On the whole, I'm not a big fan of the Transformers franchise. I never got into the 80s toys or cartoon, barely paid attention to the cartoons of the 90s, and until the first Michael Bay movie, felt "meh" about it all. It's still mostly "meh" but at least the newer stuff (minus the Bay films) seems to be more than a half hour toy commercial.
To be honest, I still mostly feel that way. Voice acting, however, is interesting to me - even if the particular role is not. I found this to be an easy, entertaining read that not only furthered my interest in the voice acting industry but also in Transformers.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a very short but insightful trip behind the scenes of everyones favorite robots in disguise. If you're like me, and hear a cartoon voice and think "hey that guy was prowl!" or "jeez how many voices has frank welker done?!" you'll enjoy getting to know a little about guys behind the voices and the general process of voice acting on a show.
Loved hearing the voice of the original bumblebee as well as an inside look of what was going on behind the scenes in the days of my childhood. Great story to listen to.
