2.5-3 stars. I'm not the biggest fan of Historical Romance and did not read the first book in this series (Struck By Thunder). "Race for Redemption" can be read as a standalone but you might enjoy it more if you read "Struck By Thunder." The biggest problem I had with this book was the author's writing style. I wasn't sure if I could make it though the first few pages much less the whole book...
Wyatt is a strange mix of a man... flawed but treated like he walks on water, domineering but also sensitive. Wyatt and Lei's relationship got annoying with all the crying and fighting. It felt like Lei was blamed for Wyatt's bad behavior/actions. As a character I found Lei disappointing... she should have been a strong independent kick-ass female instead she was insecure and spent most of the book crying. The sex between Wyatt and Lei was not my style... I found it strange and a little too bdsm. The book was mostly about the emotional damage the characters did to each other with a little politics thrown in. The kung fu element seemed tacky and over the top. I did like how they talked about race/rights and its influence during that time period. The book was funny at times and the secondary characters were interesting and well developed. The author does a great job of including the reader in the past and present so you don't feel lost/left out if you didn't read "Struck By Thunder."
*Warning* There is a lot of crying!!
If you like/don't mind crying men, rough language, explicit sex and emotional turmoil all wrapped up in wild west politics this book is for you.
Super, super, super graphic and explicit sexuality and sacrilege. Out of sheer curiosity about the characters I was already invested in, I unfortunately decided to read the sequel after a while. There's no real action, it's raw erotica surrounded by the drama of Wyatt's candidacy and his rocky relationship with Lei (much of which is drawn out). The sexuality was so overbearing it's basically porn. That has to be what you're looking for coming in--- graphic porn, with a storyline--- not erotica with a storyline. It was better than Book 1, though.
It was hot and powerful. The only thing out of line was the timeframe. It's supposed to be set in 1892.This is easy to forget because the attitude of the people in the story is clearly contemporary. It makes it slightly confusing
As arrogant, controlling and angry as Wyatt is , I still like him. Lei gets very tiring with her vacillating between I love you/I hate you. She is extremely spoiled and brings on her own misery. Of the series, this is the section I get the most frustrated with because of Lei.
Political intrigue, kung-fu, hot sex - just the kind of originality you'd expect from Taylor Lee. You won't need to down a bottle of whisky for this one, but you might want to have a glass close at hand!
Anyone who loves hot romantic suspense needs to race to read Race For Redemption. Engaging characters and fast-paced plot. This is one not to be missed.
