Lawrence is in Sri Lanka as an aid worker. He has taken to 9 year old Sunny who has a badly injured foot from his house falling down and anyone close to him cannot be found in the refugee camp of 200,000 people. Lawrence finds that Sunny’s foot may be able to be saved rather than amputated if only he can find antiseptic care for Sunny for several weeks after the operation which means finding a sponsor abroad. Lawrence has his own past to deal with and going home is the last thing he wants to do. Meanwhile in a remote village in England, Rose is awaiting her University acceptance after delaying things for a while. Her father needs 24 hour care after an incident in the village and she suspects who this might be- at least which family. she desperately wants to get away but does not want to leave her father in a care home so she is trying to find alternatives. The snow may bring its own answers. This is a well written book and you take to Rose from the outset.A highly enjoyable read.
I found a great deal of hope in 'Falling for You', a great deal of compassion and understanding of love, the Universe, and life. That's a lot for one book to take on, but the author manages with room to spare. The characters are well motivated, with much to desire, and yet not looking for the thing they find in a snowy ruin over Christmas week -- love. I won't spoil it for you. Just read it, and don't be surprised when you are taken so far into the characters' feelings, hopes, dreams and disappointments, that when it is done, you feel not only like you know them, but as if you'll never forget them. Well done, Giselle Green.
A story of Rose and Lawrence, Rose who is looking after her disabled father and Lawrence who is fighting for a boy called sonny. Worlds apart but when they meet they realize they are closer than they ever would dream! The sun called it a modern day Romeo and Juliet, but i have to disagree, it is a million times better than any Romeo and Juliet. It is a story that grips you to the bone and doesn't let go until you are shaken, sired and left panting at the world you dived in.
I have never read any of Giselle's books before and the cover lead me to believe it would be a nice flowery love story. This book is a love story, yet so much more. It is a story of an unbelievable strength, of power, of courage and of love. Written in a way you cant help loose yourself into the world created. It has to be one of the best books i have read this year, although that is becoming no mean feat with all the talent coming out this year. This has to be a book everyone reads to bring us all back to what is true and so valuable in this world today.
This is the first book I have read by this author and was pleasantly surprised. Fantastic love story had me gripped and couldn't put it down towards the end. Will be looking out for more of her books soon.
Loved this book - the right mix of characterisation and story. Rose is trying to come to terms with a bleak future and Lawrence is trying to confront his demons - a chance meeting throws them together and the description of their growing relationship is very touching in these two damaged people. A real page turner.
If you want an alternate Christmas tale, then this one would fit the bill. Quite a dark, sad tale set over the Christmas period. It had snow, love, a woman and man with a lot of secrets, secrets that could and should shatter all their dreams. But, it did have a happy ending, so that's all right then :)
The force of good over evil; the evil of a father using physical abuse and the power of fear on his family. Story somewhat drawn out at times with detailed internal dialogue of main characters. But love prevails and unusual circumstances bring about justice.
This book was easy to get in to but it took me a long time to read it because l had a lot going on in my life. I have read 3 books by Giselle green which are little miracles, finding you and this one and l was sad to read that Rose's mother Isla had passed away and her father had a accident which means he can not be left alone but rose wants to go university so she asks her uncle, his wife and their daughter to look after him but they want to put him in a nursing home. It is sad to read that sunny will have his leg removed if Lawrence does not get his mothers help to get him to the uk for his op. Lawrence does not want to come face to face with his father because his father attacked him and give him a black eye l would tell people that you should step outside your comfort zone with books because it is good to add more authors and genres to your reading portfolio I read books of this genre but l have started reading other authors and genres as well. I was sad to read that Lawrence was the person who attacked Rose's father because he was in the barn on their land to get his land back but Lawrence did not see who it was because it was dark in the barn and he thought it was his father. This book is a really great book and l highly recommend it to anyone l can not wait to read more from Giselle green I really liked this storyline Lawrence's father sounds like a evil bully wish Lawrence's mother and brother would get away from him. This is a great storyline l would love to read more about rose and Lawrence story. I hope sunny gets his treatment so he does not lose his leg l hope his family so he is not alone in the world. It was sad to read that Lawrence's father locked him and his brother up but it was mainly Lawrence he locked in. It sounds like Lawrence's father thought that Lawrence was always the naughty one not his brother. I was sad to read that Lawrence's father killed his dog Kahn. Giselle green is on of my favourite authors the first book of Giselle green l read was little miracles l had to buy the follow on finding you. I really enjoyed reading this book it was nice to read that when rose fell on the ice and cut her leg and banged her head Lawrence saved her and carried her to the church and stitched her wound for her and lite a fire to warm her up. Rose was out on Christmas Day to get the tablets her father needed. She would do anything for her father. Rose sounds like a great lady and Lawrence sounds sorry for what he did but he also sounds like a great guy who been though a lot at the hands of his father. This book has 439 pages. I would tell people to read this book for themselves to see how great it really is. It was nice to read that Lawrence help Rose's father jack from choking and passed him his inhaler that had slipped out of his hand. I hope jack takes the treatment but without selling their house and l hope Lawrence get the help he needs to get sunny to the uk for his op to save his leg. Rose's uncle and auntie want to sell their home to put jack in a nursing home but that's not what rose wants. Jack made a promise to Isla Rose's mother not to let the macrae get hands on the Clare farm. It was sad to read that rose thought she made her mother ill but she did not and Lawrence told rose that too. Lawrence helped people move a fallen tree so the roads could be cleared of the snow. Lawrence wanted to see his mother and brother without running in to his father. After the attack on jack 5 years ago he thought he was going to end up in jail. It was a war world 2 bunker that rob macrae use to lock Lawrence in till morning and Lawrence told jack everything. I am happy to read that sunny's sister found him and is taking him to live with her. I was happy to read that rose got her letter to say she had been accepted. I was sad to read that Lawrence told his father to sign Clare farm back to jack and rose so rob macrae attacks Lawrence he is bleeding everywhere and he nearly passing out but his brother walks in on the attack but their father shuts the door in his face. Lawrence has his father's gun in his belt l was happy to read that rose got in to the university she wanted and that jack was going to give the treatment in New York a go. I hope Lawrence and rose get together even though their fathers are enemies and Lawrence accidentally attacked jack five years ago thinking it was his own father. I hope Lawrence survives his father's attack and his mother and brother take Lawrence's side because it sounds like they are scared of rob. I was sad to read that rob give Lawrence's mother a black eye. No man should ever hit a lady. I am hoping gets sent to jail where he belongs. This book is awesome I could happily read it again and again I can not wait to buy more of Giselle's books
Giselle Green is an author I’ve enjoyed in the past. I absolutely adored her novel Little Miracles and although I had some problems with her last release A Sister’s Gift, it was still an enjoyable and thought-provoking read. So when I was trawling on Amazon for books coming out in 2012, I did a quick search for Giselle on the off-chance she may have a new book out and I was delighted to see she had self-published her fourth novel Falling For You and I immediately purchased it, and began reading it.
When it comes to Falling For You, I fall more on the A Sister’s Gift side than the Little Miracles side, sadly. Mostly because the novel is extraordinarily long. Too long, I feel. The beginning was good and it set the ground work nicely, as both Rose and Lawrence go about what is their daily lives. Rose looking after her father, after an accident and Lawrence looking after children in Sri Lanka. However once it gets to Lawrence and Rose trapped in an isolated ruin it seems to go on forever. According to the synopsis Lawrence and Rose are trapped for a mere 48 hours, but it’s so long, so drawn out that it seems like weeks. It really slowed things down and the way Rose continually questioned whether Lawrence liked her and how much she wondered how her Dad was doing could have been boiled down, condensed. I think part of the reason was because how intense it was, and rightly so. It should be intense. This is two strangers in such close comfort, so it should be charged, it should be intense, but at times it got a bit much, I just wanted it to stop snowing!
Call me a cynic (please do, I feel like I’m becoming more and more cynical every day) but while I liked the love story between Rose and Lawrence, while I liked how they spilled their guts to each other, the main crux of the story was treated rather lightly. That’s where the cynic creeps up. I felt Lawrence’s big reveal (which I guessed early on) was treated, by Rose, by everyone, as if it was nothing. That really, really annoyed me. I’m a balanced kind of person, I believe in forgiveness, but I also believe in justice. I believe that it doesn’t matter what Lawrence said to balance out what he did, they were just excuses. If you’re going to write something like what Lawrence did, you need to be realistic in following it through. That really let the book down for me. Because that wouldn’t be the reaction Lawrence gets in real life. Never, ever.
The book had potential, I love the idea of two people who are apparent strangers getting snowed into somewhere. And it was executed well, that part. A bit long, yes, a bit too intense sometimes, but it was good. I liked it. The characters were interesting. Pre-Lawrence’s confession I liked both Rose and Lawrence, Rose was perhaps a bit of an “old” eighteen, but after what she’s been through in her life, it was understandable and the fact she spends her days looking after her Dad does mean she had to grow up quickly. Lawrence, too, was interesting and I loved reading how attached he was to Sunny, a little boy in Sri Lanka.
The writing was good. Not as good as it could have been, with many little errors – dashes and semi-colons in the wrong places, words in the wrong places, just those little annoying things that drive me mad, and that with a little (more) editing could have been rectified. I liked Falling For You, I did. But there were things that made it a bit unbelievable. I thought after all we’d put in with Lawrence and Rose during those 48 hours, we deserved a bit of a longer ending. Or, rather, those 48 hours should have perhaps been shorted to allow more dedicated time to the ending as all of that was done in a bit of a rush. So it was an interesting idea, that was executed well for at least 60%, however 40% of the novel was not as well done. The overly long middle part was the tip of the iceberg, but I would still say that if you’ve enjoyed Giselle’s novels in the past, then Falling For You is worth purchasing. It is an interesting story (and I’d love to know how other people see the big ending), but I did have some issues with it.
I was VERY excited about reading Falling For You by Giselle Green. I just quickly want to mention that the cover of Falling For You is STUNNING! It is so beautiful and vivid at the same time and I admit I was staring at the cover for a while before actually starting the book! As I’m sure many other readers have found, a cover is sometimes what initially grabs them and attracts them to perhaps going over, picking up the book and investigating further, and Giselle’s cover will draw many readers in I am sure!
Rose looks after her frail father, and although she cares about him, she is desperate for freedom and independence, and seeing her friends go off to university and come back with a new air about them fuels this further. Lawrence has been looking after children in Sri-Lanka, he has a somewhat mysterious past and there are things that he is keen to keep hidden. During a terrible snowstorm, Rose and Lawrence find themselves trapped together whilst taking shelter from the harsh conditions. During this time both Rose and Lawrence begin to get to know each other, and not only do their backgrounds begin to unravel but secrets too…
I LOVED this book! I was completely gripped from the opening pages and I could not bear to be parted from it! I even sat up in bed past midnight just to read an extra few chapters! At the beginning it was very fast-paced which I really enjoyed as I was drawn quickly into the flow of the book and literally could not turn the pages quick enough!
Something that I particularly liked about Falling For You is that the chapters alternated between Rose and Lawrence’s perspectives. I loved how as the reader I was able to learn more of their personality, their thoughts and their feelings this way, not only their feelings about themselves or their situation but their feelings about each other too. The separate viewpoints was brilliantly executed by Giselle as I found I warmed to the characters quicker, and I created a stronger bond with them, allowing me to immerse myself in the story more and have that extra bit of enjoyment.
I was hooked by the relationship between Rose and Lawrence, the romance was beautiful! I really loved reading about it starting off as two strangers taking shelter together, then slowly edging to acquaintances, then friendship, and then the possibility of something more – the chemistry between them was wonderfully written, and every scene was so vivid that I felt as though I was living through it with them! I enjoyed how their backgrounds and secrets steadily unfolded, and with each revelation I found myself reading faster and becoming more absorbed in the story, desperate to know how it would all turn out. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it but it is clear Giselle has put a lot of work into this book and it shows – it is complex and enthralling, every word has been carefully selected and it is an emotional story that you truly will not be able to put down!
Falling For You is a beautifully and delicately written story not only exploring the theme of love but many other serious issues too. It is compelling, but at the same time moving and even thought-provoking, I went through a range of emotions whilst reading this and I can not wait to pick it up and read it all over again. This is an incredible book from Giselle Green and I am so excited about her future releases!
It is only very recently that I first read this author when I saw mention of her novels on a social media site. It was then I realised I had Pandora's Box her début novel sitting on my bookshelves. If you read my recent review for this you will already know that I was keen to read more of Giselle Green's work. She had already offered me the opportunity to review her latest novel 'Finding You', also sending me a copy of 'Falling For You' which I decided to read and review first. Having enjoyed her début novel I was still hoping for more with this one and I was not disappointed. This is a complex and emotionally charged love story with a twist, a Romeo and Juliet situation!
The protagonists Rose, sole carer for her disabled father in rural Kent and Lawrence a paramedic in Sri Lanka, relate the story to us in dedicated chapters from their own points of view. Rose is desperately trying to find a way to leave Merry Ditton and build a life for herself that includes university, love and a career. Whilst Lawrence has been obliged to return to the very same place but he is a man on the run from his past and it is whilst in hiding in the area that he and Rose meet. As they get to know each other and we them via their stories you will become aware of just how much complicated history there is in their backgrounds. No spoilers so if you want to discover just how courageous these two young people are and how it all turns out, you will have to read 'Falling For You' for yourself.
I recommend not just this novel but the author's writing in general if you enjoy contemporary romantic fiction that will stretch you emotionally. As her novels are so emotionally charged they are a good choice for book clubs as there is plenty of material that is open for discussion.
I found this book absolutely gripping, at first. The writing in the early chapters is fast-paced and terse, piling on the stress for the two main characters. We first meet Rose when she is agonising over some difficult decisions, and Lawrence when he's trying to help a nine-year-old boy in a war zone in Sri Lanka.
The book switches viewpoint between these two every few pages, leaving me wanting to find out what was going to happen next. There were plenty of hints which drew me into the story, intrigued to know what had happened to make each of them who they were.
Unfortunately, the middle section of the book is, to my mind, far too long. I lost track of how many days Rose and Lawrence spent in an old chapel, eating tuna and crackers, melting snow for tea. Their gradual friendship and inevitable attraction works well, as does the gradual unfolding of their personal histories until the dramatic denouement I had been expecting. But there is also a vast amount of reported thoughts and anxieties from each of them, sometimes repeated, which slows the story almost to a standstill.
However, the ending picks up the pace again, and I found it almost impossible to put down in the last few pages. Recommended.
When I first picked up this book in the bookshop, intriqued by the cover, I very nearly put it back down again; I needed a third book for the 3 for 2 offer, so ended up buying it. Reading the blurb got me interested - a modern day Romeo and Juliet.
Rose is a carer for her father, who is desperate to get away from her situation and the village in which she lives, but sees no end in sight to her situation. Lawrence has come home, determined to save the life of someone he has left behind.
I won't spoil the book by goind on further.
There were times the characters drove me mental with frustration, lots of mixed signals and confusion, which showed their immaturity, however the story kept me hooked with it being told from both points of view. My only bugbear is that every chapter was marked up either Lawrence or Rose, depending on who was telling the story, however the last few chapters they didn't have the person's name on the top - a minor problem.
I love a Good book you can get your teeth stuck into. I loved the story or Rose and Lawrence. I loved the characters. it lacked five stars for me because some of the in-depth story in the middle could have been left out, and more added at the end. I would of loved to read more at the end. but apart from that I found it an interesting book.
Loved it and for once Giselle has done an ending I was happy with :o) as I always go oh no I thought this was going to happen! Nevertheless Giselle Green hasnt disappointed me with any of her novels, when is her next one coming out?
A deeply touching love story of two troubled people. Excellent scene setting during a winter storm in rural England, explores how the powers of love and forgiveness overcome hate, even if a terrible crime was committed.
This book could of been more focused on Lawrence andRose' romance because it took nearly over a 100 pages for them to meet. They didn't have much of a romance! But it was an ok read.
This has been a pain to read and not in the good sense of the word. the writing is horrible and the transition between the two characters is bland you don't feel the depth and uniqueness of them cuz there really isn't any, the writer is trying too hard to make this book deep but it's lacking in so many aspects , the story itself is weak and boring .. do not recommend it at all .
