Dark Season #3

Army of Wolves

Rate this book
Five hundred years ago, a werewolf named Hamish entered into a pact to save his own life. But he broke the terms of that pact, and now an army of wolves is on his trail.

At first, Hamish believes his only chance of survival is to seek the help of his old friend, Patrick. But he then discovers that the vampire has a new companion, a human named Sophie. And that’s when Hamish hatches an insane plan that he believes will win him his freedom… even if it means Sophie will be ripped apart by a pack of wolves.

The third book in the Dark Season series sees Sophie caught up in the (mis) adventures of a werewolf named Hamish. Arriving in Dedston to get Patrick’s help, Hamish quickly realises that Sophie might be the answer to his prayers. But rather than asking for her help, he decides to just take it anyway.

With Patrick powerless to help, Sophie finds herself whisked away and heading for a dangerous showdown with the Wolf King. But Hamish’s plan soon goes wrong, and Sophie discovers that if she’s going to survive this latest encounter, she’s going to have to forget about Patrick rescuing her… She’s going to have to save herself!

I did not like the writing style of this story at all. I am hoping that if I read another story by Amy Cross that she stays in the here and now.

This was told from 2 different main characters POV. From chapter to chapter it bounced back and forth. For me that is very hard to follow. I like a straight path to follow. If this was not a short story I would have given up on reading it throw to the end.

That being said. It was about a human that (I think) was raised by a vampire. She meets & tangles with some werewolves & then goes on her way. Not very thrilling by any means.

I will try a different series by this author & hope it is better.

I am still having trouble with these being novellas. They are just too short. But wonders of wonder, after completing this instalment I came across Dark Season - The Complete First Series on Amazon and have quickly downloaded that, instead of going for each individual one from here on in.

Why, when I had already read and purchased the first three? Well, simply put, I am still having trouble with the whole novella versus novel thing. And having the complete series in one book seems much more like a novel to me. Problem solved.

So, this is the last individual review I will do for one of her books.

Army of Wolves involves, you guessed it, an army of wolves, but we actually do not see much of said army, just one in particular who is not at all likeable and a somewhat weak story surrounding Sophie.

I did feel that this instalment was not as good as the last, but it was still an extremely easy, enjoyable and pleasant read. I like Amy Cross's writing style, I like the overall story unfolding behind the scenes and I am intrigued enough to read on and find out what happens.

Amy says she treats these series as a TV series, each novella is an episode and at the end of the season, there will be a cliff-hanger. I'm not looking forward to that and am trying not to think too much about it, praying that Cross will put us out of our misery and give us some much needed answers by the end of at least Series I.

But, in the meantime, I am enjoying Dark Season. This is a nice little mystery, cleverly written with intrigue and mild suspense. I like.

This one gets a 6/10: " Good light-weight read, well done" on the NBRS.

Another reason to love Patrick is his loyalty. In this book we meet Hamish an old friend of Patricks and he tests those limits in this book.

Hamish is running from wolves and he grabbed Sophie to help him in this book. He wanted her to pretend to be a ‘Mage’. Now I admit I keep waiting for Sophie to be something more than just a mere human. She shows such bravery and level headed thinking I want her to be supernatural. So when Hamish said to pretend, I though well maybe she is a Mage. But not…

So Patrick doesn’t come to save her as he is busy fighting off wolves I guess… But does she really draw strength from Patrick or is it in her head as she thinks that Patrick is there watching she feels stronger which is really within herself?

Oh the story you have here ‘Cross has grabbed me and I am enjoying myself with your characters. I just wish I could read these books on my nook and not have to resort to my phone.

The Alpha let her live … will we see more of him later in the series?

I think there's was a lot of repetition, ( well okay, just in the following part) for example when Sophie was talking to Vincent about what's going to happen with Hamish and Patrick. The same questions were asked or said a couple of times. How many werewolves are there going to be, What will happen to Patrick, will they kill him? We can't leave him here. It was like " you just said that".

At first it was confusing why Hamish would choose Sophie to help him, basically Hamish used her. But then I found out that she is something else, that she doesn't know yet, we don't really know yet, something about a book. Oh and another thing Sophie really seems to depend on Patrick. Every time something crazy happens he can't do anything to help her so idk why she expects him to come and save the day, when so far he stands there and watches cus he can't do anything.

anyway I do like these stories, those were just a couple of things that were on my mind that I thought were a bit off but so far I am enjoy this series :)

Patrick is such a mystery, why doesn't he talk?

Meh? This review is for the series as a whole. Had a distracting number of typos and no character development to speak of - just a disjointed series of events happening to an unworthy character. Kept referring to a prophecy but never actually disclosed it or built towards it. Never set out what was special about Sophie. Never explained the wild improbability of the last installment - a perpetually uninterested mother somehow cares enough to commit Sophie for no good reason to the same facility as some unethical doctors who for some unspecified reason insist on trying to give Sophie electroshock therapy? Writing style was easy to read, but I won't get more by this author - very unsatisfying to put that much time into stories that go nowhere in particular.
