On their world, being an elemental means you will be hunted for your skin.
When the Okoru host a death auction for elementals where a rumored Fire Master is being sold, Wyan and Lor wait for the perfect moment to save him in hopes that he would, in turn, mentor Lor in her element. But things go wrong when a young Phoenix boy tries to free himself from the guards and Wyan steps in to help. That one compassionate act changes their lives forever.
They must now decide whether to track the Fire Master back to the impenetrable, Mystic prison, risking their entire family’s exposure to break him out—or to forget their ancient heritage and continue hiding from the Okoru in hopes that they will never have to fight them on their own. It is a journey of danger and discovery for Wyan and Lor as they fight the elements, their family, and even each other in their quest for freedom.

I'm called Pendragon, both for my writing passion and my drive in martial-arts. I'm a black-belt in Shaolin Kung Fu and Haidong Gumdo--both of which influence my style of writing. To make it short, I love swords, a little too much.
For me, writing non-fantasy doesn't work. I've tried. Every time I sit down to write "a good ol' Earth-based, non-magical story", my hero will turn the corner and up pops a dragon, without fail. No matter how far from fantasy I make the stories, I just can't escape the dragons--or swords (as noted with my unhealthy addiction to them). So, I stopped trying and just started writing.
I love this book. There is very little stagnant or 'dead air' time in the book. The author did a great job of building the characters without making it feel like your reading their biography. I love seeing how Wyan learns about his heritage and family ties. The fun in watching him learn his element and without giving away parts of the book I can't get into too many details but it's fun to read for anyone. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes fantasy and manipulating the elements and dragons and mystical magic events. :)
I wasn't sure how I felt about this book at first, but the characters definitely grew on me as I kept reading. The world is similar enough to standard that it's easy to accept, but there are differences mentioned that make it new and interesting. The ending went a lot faster than the beginning of the book, both with action and information. I'd definitely read another book about the Mystics and Ry. There are dangling plot points, but they feel more like the possibility of a second story rather than annoying, unsettled issues. I wonder how far forgiveness can go, and how much the characters can change in the future without becoming totally unlike themselves. I received this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had a bit of trouble getting into this book (but this may have been because of life and not the book) but once it got me, I couldn’t stop. The characters are well developed and the story is easy to follow (does not mean you figure out what is going to happen, just that you don’t get lost along the way). I would recommend this to my friends.
When I first started reading it I wasn't sure I was going to like it. I put it down for a few days. In that time, I had just started to clean and lost the book altogether. I found it a while later and decided to give it another go. I was really Happy that I did. It turned out to be really good and made me wanting more. It was so good! I can't wait to read the next one!
The only problem with Fire Gate is that I don't have part two to read yet! No laundry, homework, or dishes would be done, no dinners made until the book was completely read, devoured, and loved!
High paced with great attention to detail in creating a world so believable I was there. Seriously loved it!
Oh my goodness!!!! This book is awesome!!! It's clean, it's engaging, it kept me interested the WHOLE time! I read a lot of books, and it's not often I get to read one that keeps me in it the whole time without having to alter or skip content. Can't wait to read the next one!
