Shifting is a series of contemporary photographs focusing on the Louisiana wetlands and its dynamic and endangered present. Swamps, barrier islands, oceans and more are photographed from the land, air and water. Informed by current science, Shifting describes both the beauty of the natural habitat and also the human modifications to that habitat. Included are images of the largest oil spill in history and the historic rising tides of the Mississippi River in 2011. With photographs by Michel Varisco and contributing essays by creative writer Anne Gisleson and curator of the Ogden Museum Bradley Sumrall, Shifting aims to engage viewers in dialogue around environmental stewardship and to critically analyze what’s at stake for the region, the country, and the world.
