Living Abroad in Ireland was such an amazing book. I had purchased this a little while back when I was trying to decide what I wanted to do with my future and the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew that I had to buy it! The detailed sections of the book help with every aspect of the process of moving to and living in Ireland. It may be my personal opinion but I believe that Ireland is one of the countries you have to visit before you die because of how spectacular it is, and I am hoping that sometime in the near future I can put this book to good use and live on the Emerald Isle!
I suggest buying this book, if not for the purpose of moving to Ireland, then just for the reason of reading it. It gives you such an intimate look at how Ireland functions, it citizens and the culture, that is would be crazy not to want to learn about all these things! If you are planning on moving to Ireland then this should be on your list of items to buy before the move! It will help guide you through the moving process and help you feel better aquatinted with the country you will be moving to.
I've been to Ireland quite a few times in the past year, so I'd say I have a pretty good handle on how the country works, but even so, Living Abroad in Ireland presented many facts and crystallized ideas in a clear and helpful way. I wouldn't use it as a guide for how to make the move, but it certainly gives succinct descriptions of various aspects of life in Ireland--housing, employment, family life, politics, etc. McDonald's writing style leaves quite a bit to be desired--she repeats words several times in a sentence, verbatim repeats sentences throughout the book, and jumps into rather hilarious editorializing at points--but the information is logically, if not lyrically, presented and extremely valuable for forming a good picture of what to expect from life on the Emerald Isle. I feel I have a better understanding of Irish culture, city vs. country life, even which grocery stores to shop thanks to this book.
