Gold Winner 2012 Foreword Reviews Book of The Year, Health CategoryThe U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 1.7 million people developed healthcare acquired infections in 2010. Since most people spend only a small part of their lives in healthcare facilities, this guidebook also tells readers how to avoid picking up serious infections in day care centers, schools, business offices, and other common locations. Unlike other books, which focus on how to change the hospital systems, The Patient Survival Guide focuses on empowering you with the knowledge and techniques to ensure a safer healthcare experience. The Patient Survival Inspires you to be a your own advocate Describes in vivid detail how your preparation and informed vigilance can significantly reduce the chances of harm and death to your loved one in a hospital Provides specific, practical, and outside-the-box strategies for anticipating and preventing errors, with chapters devoted to each of the most common mistakes and mishaps Provides checklists for patients to use upon admission to healthcare facilities
I read this over the span of several weeks since I figured it's better to plan ahead while I am relatively healthy. I have been sent to the hospital several times before on an unplanned basis because I have a seizure condition. I may also need to go there again due to other reasons such as resolving a pregnancy in a different way besides The Pill. Fortunately it is still legal in Pennsylvania, but you never know with this political climate, so I decided better safe than sorry.
Overall I hope that I do not have to go, but this guide is helpful, just in case.
A very well-written and informative book for healthcare professionals and patients alike. As a nurse, I appreciated the research referenced and the statistical data. It is an important reminder of the basics of infection control. From a layman's perspective, this book would be easy to understand, empowering, and quite eye-opening. This is a book that I will recommend to family and friends to read before they need it so they can be prepared in the event of a hospitalization. I would also recommend it to home caregivers to reinforce the importance of good infection control practices.
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book via LibraryThing which has not influenced my review. Thank you.
