A Pocket Guide to Plants & Gardening also introduces us to the great names in plant discovery and science, reveals the life-changing inventions in plant science and cultivation, as well as detailing all the latest trends and fancies in the plant world. A small, attractive book that very successfully achieves the author's modest goals. It starts at the very beginning with an informative "What is a Plant?" page. There's a good overview of the "rhizosphere" -- the little known systems of interdependent fungi, bacteria and plant roots. We learn about the green sea slug, the only animal that can live on photosynthesis. The tree that when attacked by a bug releases oils that attract the bug's predators. The unusual reproductive habits of snails (a particular interest of literary suspense novelist Patricia Highsmith, by the way).
