It’s been four years since Jane Kincaid made history in the smash best-seller The Candidate...
Vice President Jane Kincaid is up for re-election alongside President Dennis Collins. Of immeasurable help and comfort to her is her lover, Secret Service Agent Alex Warner and her sister/campaign manager, Corey Kincaid.
Even though she’s planned for a tough fight, the campaign’s equilibrium is threatened by the rumor that Collins is about to be engulfed in scandal. The news comes from Julia Landen, a reporter assigned to the campaign and Alex’s ex-girlfriend. Jane wants her campaign to stay above the mire, but Corey and Julia grow increasingly obsessed with Collins’ problems—and they spend more and more time together. Not happy to have her ex underfoot, Alex shares Jane’s concern about the burgeoning romance.
On the eve of the party convention the scandal explodes on the front pages, gutting the viability of the Collins/Kincaid ticket. Everyone suspects dirty tricks and Alex undertakes an investigation—but any evidence she finds won’t change the fact that Jane is once again standing on the edge of history. This time winning and losing both come with immeasurable consequences.
I'm the author of several lesbian romance novels published by Bella Books, including the Lambda Literary Award finalists "Last Salute" and "No Rules of Engagement". I'm a voracious reader, even more so now that I've retired from a 27-year career as a daily newspaper journalist.
Strangely found this more engaging than Book 1 in the series - seemed to have almost every subject I love, down to sport and best friends. Loved the Politics and the games people play - Excellent, thank you Ms Richardson!
Didn't realize that I had read the first book in the series and giving it 1 star. Had I paid more attention to details I wouldn't probably have read it. Didn't like this much more either, basically had the same problem as the first one. But the romance was a bit more fun in this and little more interesting
The first was good and now I've read the second I found it even better. The free flowing writing style of this author is awesome and makes the enjoyment of the book even more pleasurable. Both the storyline and the characters are very believable and extremely satisfying. The book has a bit of everything. Love and loss, friends and enemies, along with family and community. It truly is an amazing book and very well written. I'm off to read number three. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.
More about politics than romance, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as its predecessor which doesn’t mean it was a bad read at all. Jane, fantastic, imperfect and full of power as always and Alex as her champion, her guardian, don’t disappoint but I couldn’t get drawn in Corey and Julia’s relationship, didn’t feel the chemistry as with Jane and Alex
Politics has never been a fun thought but this story brings so many feels to the story of poliics
What a dynamic cast of characters that take us on a campaign trail like no other. The voices that speak of all that is good and the ones that can't seem to keep from ego centric Glory. Jane is a woman with honor, a leader in the best sense. Alex is a partner in every way and a protector. I love their deep friendship and love. I am not sure why anyone would want a political life gauntlet they lead. Tracey Richardson builds a story you can't put down and a cast of characters so intriguing. I enjoyed this read and rembered what it was like to believe in someone again.
The Candidate and The Campaign are wonderful stories filled with romance, just enough angst, some painful moments, lots of hopeful thoughts and generally uplifting. The characters are so engaging it would be wonderful to see their journeys continue in the author’s beautiful writing style.
This book was pretty good. I had to double check the publication date (2012) because the president in the book was a version of our current president; aloof, smarter than everyone else, and all about what’s best for him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I love the main characters and the addition of Jane's sister and Alex's ex girlfriend to the cast rounded the story out well.
50% through Had to dnf because it disappeared from audible but honestly shouldn't have even started it after my feelings towards the first, may try again in future, reading reading instead
The writing was much better than the first installment, as if written by different people. I still skipped through pages to get to the dialogues and good parts, but I wanted to continue the series.
This is the second book in the Kincaid/Warner series. Written in 2012, the book depicts a situation that is similar to what is happening in the Presidential election of 2024. Dramatic read about appealing and strong characters and romantic twists in a political story. I liked reading it during the 2024 campaign season.
The main reason I rated The Candidate as low as I did was that it annoyed me that the story was trapped in the romance genre as it could have been much more than it was.
The same is kind of true for The Campaign, although the new romance takes a backseat and quite honestly I could have done without it entirely.
I didn't remember much of the backstory, but the story managed to draw me in. The plot is predictable right from the start and even the 'surprises' really aren't surprising. And yet I really, really had to finish it last night to see how it played out. While it was really fun to read it, the book clearly is a 2012 book with its retelling of campaign strategies, current events, current technology, etc. Not sure how it will hold up.
The language at times annoyed me as it was so very romance-y.
Nice escapist fun. I like Richardson's voice overall. In comparison with others, she only pushes few of my buttons.
The Candidate was a fun, tightly plotted book, and unfortunately The Campaign didn't quite live up to it. For a book published in 2012, was very dated, both politically and technologically, and the plot was both messier and less engaging. I did, however, find it worth reading to find out what happened to all the characters.
I liked "The Candidate", and I liked "The Campaign". Now I'll be waiting for "The President" and "The First Lady" . . . maybe with different titles as these ones by Cooper&Novan already exists (and are two of my all time favourites!)
