Shel Carson was a great cop until she fell victim to the vices of Shreveport’s underworld. Clawing her way back from the brink has left her clean and sober, but also dishonored and unemployed. She turns to the only thing she knows and becomes a detective for hire.
She can’t afford to be picky about her cases, and when a wealthy client wants her to extract his kidnapped daughter from his manipulative, psychotic ex-wife she reluctantly agrees. The fee is huge and will ease her financial woes.
She finds mother and daughter quickly, living under new names. Even to Shel’s jaundiced eye, “Addison James” appears to be a loving mother and a gentle, quiet woman, nothing like the evil witch her ex-husband described.
A belated sense of honor is extremely inconvenient—as is the irresistible passion that Addison arouses. But her client wants back what he considers his…

It's got suspense, intrigue, a battered ex-cop with a dry, sarcastic wit, and a cat with a chip on it's shoulder, what more do you need? Romance you say? Well it's got that too, although it kind of felt rushed; one moment Addison can barely manage a sentence to Shel and the next they're getting their freak on. Nonetheless the romance is sweet and satisfying, so it works. Great book overall.
This is a pretty good story. The ending is rather improbable but this is fiction so I'm good with that. My biggest complaint is a reoccurrence of the instalove phenomenon. The central couple exchange a few not so pleasant words at their first meeting and they fall in love at the second meeting. It's crazy. Still, I will check out her other books.
Sara Marx is one of the best writers of this genre. This book is a page-turner. And not just because of the mystery involved, but because of the strong characterizations. I had to find out what happened to them! There's mystery, plenty of romance (though not sticky sweet, thank God) and a heroine who is flawed and has to battle her own demons. Sara Marx excels in creating the reluctant hero.
Considering every piece indie lesbian lit had disappointed me so far this was a surprisingly solid read. I read highly reviewed books with 1k+ (a huge amount for lesfic lets be honest) and came away feeling disappointing. But this was fun even though I never heard it anywhere before. Literally the only reason i picked this up is because the authors name is a variation of my girlfriends name.
Shel Carson was a great cop until . . . and then she became a detective in order to survive. So when she gets hired to track down a missing mother and daughter, given a massive expense account and promised a rich reward, it seems like she'll have the wherewithal to do this case and be able to start a new life. Well, things aren't always as they seem, and the more she discovers, they are even less. Art forgeries, millions of dollars, ex-wife who isn't, and sun-kissed beaches. Oh, and a belated sense of honor can be terribly inconvenient at times.
