As Dawson Trotman came to understand what role he was to play in God’s kingdom, he got down to business doing what he was gifted developing effective processes for teaching people how to read, study, and memorize Scripture. Out of his passion came a new approach to discipleship and with it a ministry organization called The Navigators.
Dawson In His Own Words contains excerpts from his personal journals, private correspondence, original sermons, and “Faithful Men,” the unfinished manuscript he had intended to be his major work on discipleship.
The book also contains 52 devotions built around his writings and Scripture plus images, illustrations, essays, and articles created by Daws so you can see firsthand how he would have presented them.
I love the heart of Dawson Trotman. I love his zeal for gospel work and follow-up. And I love that he was a man who took God at his word. Dawson Trotman: In His Own Words-is composed of a short sketch of his life and ministry distinctives, a devotional comprised of reflections on short statements made over the course of Trotman's life, and a few less known and unpublished articles that the apostle of follow-up wrote as the Navigators was being forged.
I think each element of this book is filled with encouragement and great Daws nuggets, however, the book feels a little uneven. I think it would have been more helpful to take up a book-length treatment of Dawson's writings, which would have been much more fitting to the title. And perhaps even a second book that was more like a devotion of quotations and reflections by the editors. And, of course, a much fuller biography of the man himself. Other books handle the biography side, but I think I wanted more of Daws in his own words.
With that said, I greatly enjoyed the material included and benefited from this book. If you are not going to read the longer biography or like a devotional format, then this book will be right up your alley.
