Pack and Coven
3.5 Stars

Harry Smith enjoys his life as a lone wolf until he is targeted to become the co-alpha of the local pack. Harry's only choice is to escape, but he cannot do it alone. Help comes from a most unexpected source - June Travis, owner of the local tea shop and a witch concealing her true nature. As Harry and June hide from his pursuers, they find their mutual attraction can no longer be denied even if it costs them their lives and their love.

While the basic remise of the story is not unique, the conceptualization of pack dynamics is original and the secrets kept by the coven are very intriguing. Nevertheless, the pacing is slow at the start, and there is too much focus on the characters' internal ruminations regarding their choice of lifestyle. The action picks up once Harry and June are on the run and their romance steams up the pages.

Although Harry and June are likable enough, there are some minor issues that put a damper on their relationship. First, Harry has a bad habit of not listening to June. She provides him with useful information and makes important suggestions, which he promptly ignores to their detriment. Second, June is a very willing partner in the sexcapades, but she is fuzzy on the "no" versus "yes" distinction.

The villain is definitely one of the more despicable I've encountered in recent times and Wallace does an excellent job with his malicious and sadistic characterization. The climax and resolution are exciting and satisfying.

In sum, the compelling world building and sexy romance make this a fun read, but the drawn out pacing in the beginning and toward the end is a distraction.

Dirty Harry.

I read my first book from this author, The Whole Truth, last month and loved it. I fell in love with the unique characters and fascinating magic and was keen to try another of Jody's books. I decided on this one and am glad I did! Although, she did warn me that this would have a lot more sex in it - which I thought perfectly acceptable since this is Paranormal Romance and The Whole Truth was Urban Fantasy - but I think perhaps what she was preparing me for was not just the amount of sex, but the nature of it! This book is very erotic! Especially for a UF! I can already picture several of my Goodreads friends' ears pricking up at that statement. "What? It has smutty smut in it, you say? Where do I sign up?!" Alas, myself being the vanilla bean baby I am, I did find it a smidgen too much for me, personally - I like the mushy romantic stuff, and this was a lot more....detailed, shall we say! *still blushing to my roots* But I still enjoyed the book tremendously and think this has the makings of a very interesting series!

Pack and Coven follows lone wolf Harry Smith as he putters around the town he's made his own, working in his mechanic shop and visiting his favourite diner- and his favourite ladies that work there - in a state of contentment he has no wish to change. However, the local pack's alpha female has other ideas, and gives Harry an ultimatum to either join the pack and become her new mate at the next moon ceremony, or else. This is the very last thing Harry wants, but he doesn't want to leave town either. He feels settled for the first time in forever, and has a great relationship with octogenarian diner owner Sandie, who he considers one of his. What he doesn't know, however, is that 80-year-old Sandie, doesn't exist. She's merely the mask worn by young, blonde and bountiful June, a powerful coven witch who's been secretly in love with Harry for years. The discovery that the sweet old lady, and best damn cook Harry's ever met, whom he's known for eight years is actually a hot young thing, is at first very confusing, then very exciting for Harry. And this book follows that relationship transition, while the greater threat of the pack wolves grows ever nearer. It was an action-packed, super-sexy thrill ride from start to finish, and I highly recommend it to all readers of UF!

Giving this a 3.5 stars - It was really a cute story - but I don't know if it's because I wasn't feeling well, or if I just didn't seem to connect well with the main characters. Well mostly June.

Usually when I read a book I can get their look and voice and everything in my head and read the book as that character - but June just kind of had one of those really .... June Cleaver type attitudes. And I guess it just didn't go well with the way it read in the book.

It was really a cute story though - I liked the way the Witches and Werewolves are connected - but only the Witches know of the Wolves, but the wolves don't know about the witches. Why .. well that's the most interesting part of the story :)

The book starts off with Harry at the small little Tea Room Cafe - not a typical place for a big strong lone wolf to hang out - but he's a lone wolf for a reason - he refuses to belong to a Pack. They killed his mother when he was a kid, and he swore he'd never join a pack, even though he has the Alpha Gene.

Sitting in the same town cafe , Harry has been a regular there for 8 years now. Sadie, the head cook knows exactly how he likes his stakes. Although stakes isn't something usually ordered there, she makes it special just for him. They go to a movie night in town, and hang out at her house. She's just about the best friend a guy could ask for. And best of all, she wasn't a Wolf - If she was only, say 50 years younger, he would be all over her.

But Sadie was an older woman, just like many of the other regulars they hung out with. Harry liked them a lot and considered them good friends.

When Bianca (The Local Pack's Female Alpha) walks into the Cafe with her 2 BFF's, letting Harry know that Bert, her husband was now officially kicked out of the Pack for breaking the law and going to jail. The Pack NEEDS another Alpha Gene to even out the Pack. And if Harry didn't do it, the pack would fade out. Bianca wasn't going to let that happen. She would do anything to keep her pack.

So she gives him until 3:00 to get things in order, but she issues a Lock Down of the state and calls in some help form the nearby packs to help make sure Harry doesn't have a choice but to go to the Pack Bonding Ceremony.

Trying to get away as quickly and quietly as he could, Harry sneaks to his garage (he's a mechanic) And that's where he finds Sadie... at least he thought it was Sadie - it smelt like Sadie, and from a distance, she looked like Sadie - only younger... about 50 years younger..
Enter June - June is Sadie's "Grand-daughter" only deep down, she has a secret. She's a witch, and Sadie isn't who Harry thinks she is.

June helps Harry escape from Bianca and her friends, but Harry can't figure out how they got away.
When they get in the car, Harry passes out. June drives them as far as she could go, then puts a spell over the car. She tells Harry not to drive anymore, she needed to rest. Then she falls into a deep sleep.

Well harry isn't one to believe in magic, and he's definitly not going to sit around in the car while June sleeps while the Pack is hunting them down. So he gets in the drivers seat and takes off.

Pulling over to take a better look/listen around to see if they're being hunted, Harry notices a couple of wolves in human form. But for some reason, they don't recognize Harry, or his sent. How could that be??

it's magic :)

Like I said, before - this was a really cute story, but June was just a little too .... good for this part :) She scolded Harry for using foul language, for thinking unkind thoughts out loud.

It wasn't a PG book - in fact, it their relationship grew pretty quickly, and even though it was forbidden for a Werewolf and a Witch to mate... hey it happens, right :)

So yeah, it was cute and that's what I thought about this book :)

Hot damn, now THIS is the kind of paranormal romance I’ve been looking for!

It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a paranormal romance this much, especially one involving werewolves. (Don’t get me wrong; I love werewolves. I’m just sick to death of “fated mates”…) This is the first of Jody Wallace’s stories that I’ve read, but it won’t be the last.

The highlight of Pack and Coven was – hallelujah! – the characters. Harry and June were fantastic. BOTH of them are smart, strong, and funny; both of them are brave and put the welfare of others ahead of themselves. Neither of them is perfect, though – each is flawed enough to be likeable. Harry’s all sexy-Alpha-male (emphasis on the male – his thought processes were all man) and June’s all sassy-spell-casting awesomeness, and the combo was truly entertaining. The villains weren’t antiheroes, they were icky, evil villains, which made the asskicking very satisfying to read.

Another highlight was the plotting. Let’s be honest: the plot in a majority of paranormal romances is about as substantial as a string bikini. Not so in Pack & Coven – there’s LOADS of action, and it’s all structured perfectly to support and showcase the romance. (Consider it the sexy-black-one-piece-swimsuit of plots.)

Speaking of romance – I have to say I genuinely enjoyed the developing relationship between Harry and June. Insta-love never works for me, so the firmly established friendship and history between these two was a nice touch, as was the complete absence of any fated-mates crap. This is about Harry and June finally losing their secrets and connecting with one another, and it was fun. The chemistry was convincing but not overdone, and there was more emphasis on the emotional connection between the characters than what they did in bed. In fact, the only romance element I didn’t like was the language during the first sex scene. The heroine thinking of her sexy bits as “privates” just felt…wrong. It was minor, and disappeared after that scene, but it struck me as odd to use a vague, juvenile term in the middle of a hot-sex-on-the-counter scene.

Summary: A delightful stand-alone romance with quirky, likeable characters, and lots of action and chuckles – all set in a paranormal world with a twist. Quick to read, and perfect for the weekend or an evening’s escape…

This blurb came from the author’s website here.

I am pretty sure that I heard of Pack and Coven from the Saturday Snippets, which are very dangerous, and added it to my book release spreadsheet. I hadn’t made a note of which publisher so I was surprised when I was browsing through the February Carina Press titles on NetGalley and found it there. I couldn’t resist requesting it because I mean werewolves, witches and the fact that the two shouldn’t mix…

Ms Wallace took several aspects of werewolf and witch lore that I am familiar with and gave them some interesting twists. As I was reading I found that I kept looking for the next twist because they were sprinkled in. Her world-building gradually unfolded and it seemed like every time I thought I had the world all figured out something new popped up. I can’t really talk about the specifics of the twists because they also formed integral portions of the plot. Both the werewolves and witches demonstrated that they would do whatever it took for the survival of the masses. ‘Whatever’ certainly stretched to include what we might call drastic measures, which was both a blessing and a curse. I liked how tradition demonstrated it would cut both ways.

I did have a few issues with the characters. I thought that both Harry and June had some TSTL moments. I think some of those were driven by their own natures and a strong dependence only on what they grew up knowing. It appeared that despite the sexual attraction they really didn’t trust each other enough to effectively work together. I also thought one of the stumbling blocks to their relationship was fixed a little too easily; but that could be because when I am reading I like to see both internal and external conflict before the HEA, in this case the internal conflict seemed to be resolved before it became a conflict. I also wish the supporting cast, to include the villains, were fleshed out more. I did enjoy the various degrees of bad/evil in the villains and the additional twist, but they still seemed mainly two-dimensional.

Overall it was a decent read, one that I found I liked the world more then the characters. I give Pack and Coven a B-

Pack and Coven by Jody Wallace Page is a paranormal romance available on e-readers and as an audio book. Harry Smith is a lone wolf and is doing everything in his power to stay that way. However, he is also an alpha wolf and the local pack wants to bring him into the fold, whether he wants in or not. He does not want to leave, he has a favorite place to eat and a group of people he likes to spend time with. Now he is trying to stay free, with a little unexpected help. June has been a friend and admirer of Harry for years, but he has no idea who she is because she has been under magical disguise, hiding as the elderly woman Sadie who Harry loves for her cooking and spunk. Harry initially thinks June is Sadie's granddaughter. She tries to help him hide from the pack, but things quickly go from bad to insanely complicated. June is a witch willing to risk everything in order to help Harry. While Harry and June are drawn together, the complications are mounting along with the danger and everything and everyone is at risk.

I liked Pack and Coven, it kept me reading well past my bedtime. Which as an exhausted mother of two young children, says a lot. Alright, so maybe I just liked Harry, a lot. He is an alpha man who respects women. He likes hanging out with people for their cooking and their company, not to get into their pants. Alright, so once he discovered that June was young, attractive, and could cook there was some of that too, but when he first met her as Sadie he preferred to spend time with her and the 'grannies' rather than go out on dates. He is a little arrogant at times, but it is tempered with concern for others. We could use some real Harry's in the world, even if they did get furry.

June held much less of my affection than Harry. While she is clearly older than her appearance, I found her objections to cursing and cleanliness a little distracting. Much of it came with good reason, but I just did not connect with her. I liked her more in the beginning when she was the spunky, though elderly, Sadie than when she looked to be in her twenties but with the same personality. I really liked that the plot was not simple and contrived. There were many players, and not all of the characters that might have originally been seen as villains stayed firmly in their place. There are several layers of action and plot, which I really enjoyed.

I recommend Pack and Coven to readers that enjoy paranormal romance and urban fantasy with a romance included. The story moves at a good pace, with the only slow portions inside June's head weighing the consequences of having a relationship with Harry. This is the perfect book for reading during a lazy weekend.

The Good: This book has a unique premise to me in a couple of ways and I like that. First, there's a very different explanation for where witchcraft can come from. I don't want to spoil it since it's a central part of June/Sandie's story and mystery, but it's nice to see an author take a fresh stab at mythology and to also try and tie wolves and witches together in a new way. Additionally, the other premise I love is that June is a long-lived witches and that, in turn, witches end up going through "pass throughs" in life. This is her first and she's been around long enough to have to disguise herself as her elderly "grandmother" Sandie. The best part about this is that Harry becomes deep friends with Sandie first, not realizing there's someone younger behind the sympathetic shoulder he leans on. I really love that the hero loves the heroine's soul long before there's a physical connection.

Additionally, the sex is amazingly written and truly well done. Definitely had me wanting more. Ms. Wallace has a faculty for that, and I am definitely reading further works of hers because wowzer.

***

The Bad: I respect what Ms. Wallace tried to do with adding a new edge to paranormal intrigue and mythos. That said, some of the intricacies of pack politics, coven codes, and the intermingling of both became overly complex and bogged down the story. There was at least one night this week where, I admit, I put the book aside because I was glossing over the politics in the supernatural world presented. I think that's the biggest drawback of the novel, to be honest.

I'd also say that the main villain, Gavin, is just so reprehensible, it's hard to be invested. I'm not saying everyone has to be deeply tortured or woobie anti-hero. I just feel he was so one dimensional and violent that, in a lot of ways, I wasn't scared as much as disgusted by his history and antics. I will say, however, the secondary antagonist, Bianca, is much more interesting, and I enjoyed her intrigue and learning about the relationships that strengthened her. If Ms. Wallace ever re-explored this world, I'd be there to follow Bianca, definitely.

***

The Verdict: I am giving this **** or FOUR STARS
It's hot, it's different, and it gives us a romance based on a connection between two compatible souls where looks is an after thought overall, something I found beyond refreshing. I recommend this book, and, eventually, will be bringing you all a review of one of her other novels, Stalking Evan, this time about feline/panther shifters.

My Review:
B+ hot
I really loved this book. It was so different from everything out there on the market today and, on top of that, it was completely entertaining. Harry is a lone wolf. He has no desire to become part of a pack after an incredibly horrible pack event ended in the death of his mother when he was ten. But he is still a wolf, and as such, he is drawn to people. As a result, he has formed a small group of friends in town with the towns elderly women. He plays bunco with them, goes to movie nights with them, etc. What he doesn't realize is that the elderly facades are disguising the town's coven...who are actually young and attractive women. When the town pack tries to force him into being part of the pack, the truth starts to come out.

June has been friends with Harry for eight years...in fact, they have been best friends. But she has been hiding under the 80 year old facade of Sandie who runs the local tea shop. When she realizes what is happening with the local pack and what they are trying to force Harry into, she knows that it's time for June, her real, young, attractive persona to come out and work to save him. She's a witch, although he has no idea, even though she has known that he is a werewolf throughout their entire friendship.

There is a whole new world here that I simply loved. Within the Covens and the Packs are a TON of politics. Ultimately, it is all to help maintain their anonymity, but that doesn't mean that the Covens and Packs understand or want to understand and work together, which leaves Harry and June smack dab in the middle of a HUGE mess. I really liked how all of this was handled in the book. It's complex, but was never confusing. There is also a huge cast of characters, but they were so much fun within the small town setting.

For me, though, the character that made this book is Harry. I loved his character. He's a lone wolf, but he's a natural alpha. Actually, June is a natural alpha too (as a witch? I know what you are thinking...some great twists to this world!!) I loved the scenes where June and Harry pitch their alphas against each other...so much fun. Every single time....I didn't know which one of them was going to come out on top. From beginning to end, I was completely immersed and mesmerized by the story. It's fabulous and entertaining. Just a fun, fabulous read!

Original Take on Shapeshifters!

Werewolf politics are so complicated it's no wonder Harry Smith wants nothing to do with being part of a pack. But when the local pack loses their Alpha male and he becomes the most sought after man in the area it'll take something magical to get out of being forced into the job. Enter June, one smokin' hot young woman who offers him her help. But what Harry doesn't know is that June's much closer to him than he realizes. Under a special spell she's been running the local tearoom and been his elderly friend for years, secretly in love with him.

As the two scramble about trying to avoid the shifters hot on his trail her magic can only do so much. There's much more between this witch and wolf than a mutual attraction and should they give in to their desires June will have to pay the consequences because their respective kinds are not supposed to mix.

PACK AND COVEN is definitely an unconventional romance even by paranormal standards. A lone wolf who hangs out with a group of old ladies instead of a pack? A little old lady who's actually a sexy young witch? Oh yeah, it starts with some pretty crazy plot points. But that's what makes it really good. It's different! It isn't often I buy a hero and heroine combo so easily but the set-up that they were already well known to one another made it an easier sell than usual. June's frequent chiding him for using bad language kept cracking me up and Harry's non-chalance about being best-buds with a group of grannies was eccentric but cute.

The actual plot of Harry and June hiding out from the local pack did run in circles (literally) a bit too much for me which did slow the story down at times to my annoyance but otherwise this is a fairly quick and original read. The big reveal about why witches aren't supposed to have sex with werewolves was a great twist and is one of the main reasons I would highly recommend this one to werewolf and shapeshifter fans in need of a palate cleanser between darker stories.

PACK AND COVEN is another enjoyable quick-read from Carina Press and has all the steamy love scenes, LOL-moments, and nail-biting suspense-filled pages a big-time paranormal romance fan could ask for.

– no, forse è meglio di no – allora, non mi hai ancora spogliata?”

Veramente, ragazze, non so come dirvelo, leggetelo.

My Thoughts:
This book rates between 2.75 to 3 stars so I will round up to 3. The story was interesting and very solid. I liked the twist of the shifters/witches being branches of the same genetic tree. Where that was an interesting concept, the book failed to deliver a substantial impact because of its characters. The story would have been more compelling with different characters, specifically the hero, Harry. He lacked the necessary something to connect me to him or prompt me to truly rave about the story. In the story he was constantly regarded an alpha yet I failed to see see the persona expressed in his actions. It was almost as if the reader had to be reminded that he was as alpha because it was often noted that he was using his alpha power. In reality, I found him to be as weak and anemic as he was perceived to be by Bianca. June expressed more alpha than Harry did. In fact, she was the true hero of the story because she frequently saved him from trouble using her magic. She was clear, precise, clever, and strong-willed.

Overall, this was a very decent story...well written and conceptually sound.

Review:

I received an ARC of Pack and Coven from NetGalley in exchange for a review. Harry is lone wolf living in pack territory when half of the alpha couple heads off to jail the pack tries to replace him with Harry. Harry wants no part of pack life so June helps him try to escape. June is a witch who has been living as an elderly lady and has never shown Harry her true form despite them being friends for years. June tries to fight off her attraction to Harry because if they sleep together she could lose her magic. The storyline was very good and I really liked the connection between witches and wolves, that was well thought out and gave the story some originality.

Now the characters, there was a clear line between the good guys and the bad and the bad guys were really bad…like homicidal maniac bad. You really wanted to see something bad happen to them and see the good guys win. The main characters, however drove me nuts. Throughout the book you are told Harry is an alpha however he doesn’t particularly act like one, while June on the other hand was creative and pretty resourceful at getting them out of some sticky situations. The dialogue between them at times could be ridiculous though, two examples come to mind the first is June correcting Harry’s swearing. If you’re being chased by a homicidal maniac intent on raping and killing you it’s a pretty justifiable time to say fuck. The other is the sex scenes…”he rubbed against her privates”… seriously? ! A hot female lead sounding like an 80 year old school teacher just didn’t work for me. Overall I did like the story and with a little bit of polish it could be very good. I rated it 3/5.

Harry is an independent werewolf, who has no desire to join a pack. But the local female alpha has different ideas. After her husband gets carted off to jail, she tries to force Harry to step up. He doesn't have many options, until June steps forward.

June is a witch, but her kind keep their existence a closely guarded secret. In fact, she has hidden behind the disguise of an old woman for years. She and Harry have been close friends, but he had no idea about who she really was or what she really looked like.

The story basically follows the pair as they first try to escape, and then try to hide from the pack. During their time together, their long-standing affection turns into more. There's some sex to spice things up and there's some shifter violence too. But try as I might, I just couldn't connect with this story. Maybe it's because it was hard for me to believe how quickly Harry was able to shift his feelings from his elderly friend to the sexy witch he wants to get busy with. Maybe it was the way June kept acting like an old lady throughout the first half of the book, worrying about her housecleaning and clucking over bad language.

I don't know. The relationship just didn't feel real, despite the characters' history. The villain was one dimensional. The coven members came off as clumsy and stupid. They weren't likable. The pack wasn't likable. And the ending was rushed.

I'll give the author credit for an interesting and original take on the origins of her witches. But this book was just not a good fit for me. 2 1/2 stars.

Pack and Coven is a sweet paranormal romance with a bit of a (non-sexy) thrill. I liked (but didn't love) both of the lead characters: Harry is an adorable loner and June is a rather prim witch who's been in love with Harry for quite some time, even though he only knows her as Sadie, the sweet older woman who owns the local tearoom. She's forced to reveal her true self and the fact that she's a witch when the female Alpha of the local werewolf pack, Bianca, tries to force Henry into becoming her new male Alpha. Henry has absolutely no interest in participating in the pack, let alone becoming one of its leaders, but he can't escape thanks to a lockdown. June and Henry are thrown together as she tries to help him avoid Bianca and some werewolves from his old pack, who have come down to try to claim the position Bianca wants to give to Henry.

There's some great world building in Pack and Coven. The differences between werewolves and witches are quite interesting and I really liked that witches knew about werewolves but not vice versa. Jody Wallace did a great job of putting her own spin on existing supernaturals. In fact, I think the world is my favourite part of the novel.

That being said, I wasn't hooked by Henry and June's story. I enjoyed reading it but I wasn't desperate to find out how it would end. Pack and Coven is a solid paranormal romance but it's not on my must-read list.

Harry is a lone wolf who wants no part in being part of a pack, he likes going to the local tea room and spending his evening with the old women who work there. When the local alpha is arrested and sent to jail the alpha female comes to him and tells him they are going to force him to become part of their pack. June the “old lady” who owns the tea room who overhears all this and decides to do something about it. June has loved Harry for eight years but cant do anything about it because she is disguised as an old woman, so when he has this problem she sheds her disguise and helps him to escapes. While they are escaping various things go wrong and the attraction becomes too much for June to fight. June is a powerful witch, but she makes all these mistakes and she doesn’t seem like she is that smart. Harry is just blah, he seemed to fade into the background most of the time. I thought the book was choppy, the scenes jumped around a lot, except for when the couple has sex. The majority of the book focused on the few hours that the couple was in bed together, it was disproportionate to the amount of time that lapsed overall in the book. The fact that June was the woman that Harry thought of like a kindly grandmother made me uncomfortable. I did not like this book at all.

As I write this review and I see the cover of Pack and Coven after reading the book, the cover model for Harry is not right at all. He's too piddly looking, the facial hair just doesn't cut it I'm afraid.

Pack and Coven has a very well written world with some really great characters. The good guys are more than likeable and the bad guy is downright scary and has the ugliest personality. Definitely someone you want to see bad things happen to.

Highly recommended to any werewolf and witchy fans and I'll definitely be looking for more from Jody Wallace.

Made it about 75 pages before giving up. I just wasn't sympathetic to either character. And they seemed to be going in circles as to where they should hide out. I was bored and didn't care about continuing.

Hot romance. I especially liked the secret identity twist and how Harry loved both June and Sandy in different ways. Some nice world-building re werewolf and coven culture .
