About the author

Mitchell, Hinckley Gilbert Thomas (22 February 1846–19 May 1920), biblical scholar and theologian, was born in Lee, New York, the son of James Mitchell and Sarah Gilbert Thomas. During his childhood, Mitchell’s family moved several times, finally settling in Remain, New York. He was educated at Talley Seminary in Fulton, New York, and at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he received his B.A. (1873), and was ranked as the top student of his class, and M.A. (1876, with honors). During this time, he also studied theology at Boston University, graduating with an S.T.D. in 1876. Encouraged by Dean Latimer, he developed an interest in biblical criticism and exegesis and went to the University of Leipzig in Germany, where he studied under Franz Julius Delitzsch, earning a Ph.D. in 1879....
