Nora and the Werewolf Wedding: A Nora Grayson Adventure

Rate this book
Everyone has secrets.

Some are hidden in plain sight. Some are buried. And some date back centuries.

For Nora Grayson, those secrets are always in the open. An empath and a wizard living in Boston, she sees them come through her door every day as she acts as a counselor to the supernatural among us. Cheating spouses, financial troubles, and hidden longings all unfold in her private study as she struggles to keep magic from ripping through the walls and exposing Bright creatures to humanity.

Harboring secrets for the Bright doesn't pay well either, so when Constable Derrick King arrives on her doorstep with an offer her bank account can’t refuse, and a smile she can’t forget, she is dragged from her Boston home and plunged neck-deep into werewolf politics. But there's more at play here than a socialite wedding. For starters, the bride and mother are at odds, the groom is clueless, and the father of the bride is off catching butterflies.

To make matters worse, Derrick is conducting an investigation into the bride’s family that threatens to land several of the wedding party in jail. After an attendee is discovered murdered, Nora becomes the prime suspect according to this socialite werewolf family and must rely on Derrick to clear her name. With a killer on the loose, a bride gone missing, and dark family secrets surfacing, Nora and Derrick race to uncover the culprit before they both become centerpieces at a werewolf wedding feast.

A.J. (Aimee Jean) Maguire has been writing about women rescuing their men since 2008. She loves stories in all shapes and sizes, which means her novels tend to run the full spectrum of fiction, but her favorites are fantasy and science fiction. She is currently living her own happily ever after in Central Massachusetts with her husband and son, where they are surrounded by far too many pets. On the weekends she enjoys exploring the many historical sites peppering New England or hunting for lighthouses on the coast.

She graduated with honors from Northwest Nazarene University in 2014 and is a proud veteran. Her time in the military inspired several soldier characters that can be found in her work and she has confessed that she used to carry 3×5 cards in her cargo pockets in case she needed to jot notes in the field.

When Constable Derrick King turned up on her doorstep, Nora hadn’t expected to be dragged, unwillingly, to a werewolf wedding, and certainly not to become a prime suspect in a murder.

This is a nice mix of fantasy, crime and a bit of romantic tension too. The writing flows nicely, with a good mix of characters, good world building and an interesting plot. Nora is a bit of an innocent, all part of the story, but she has grit and determination too. Derrick is a good foil for her, and a bit of a romantic spark between the two adds to the enjoyment. The supporting characters were also interesting, I particularly liked Derricks partner and boss. There is certainly plenty of scope for more from Nora and Derrick. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

What a ride! This is my first book with the author, and I can say I am thoroughly impressed. I’m not usually a fantasy/romance reader, but this one caught my eye. Almost from the very beginning the characters and story are moving. The author is descriptive enough to give good bones to the world she has created, but not so much as to get bored. There is great chemistry between the main characters, and I was guessing a lot as to where the story would lead. No spoilers, but I was surprised. I really appreciate how this was a clean story. I always like when I can offer book suggestions to young readers. I look forward to reading the next books in the series. A.J. Maguire is the daughter of a friend of mine, and we've spoken only to say hello. I wasn't sure what to expect when Ken handed me this novel. My wife read it first, saying it was a fast, enjoyable read.

I thought it would be a light, frothy romance with supernatural overtones. However, the more I read, the darker things got, and A.J. does a lovely job raising the stakes with every chapter. She also damages her characters, making them earn their victory.

The writing is clear, the pacing brisk, and while I wish some of the characters were more fleshed out, we get enough to be invested in them. Her worldbuilding is sufficient, but clearly, there is much more to explore, and it's unique enough not to feel like anyone else's use of Faerie, werewolves, and vampires.

Clearly, she loves Nora because the book includes an excerpt from her next exploit.

I found it to be a fun and interesting read while avoiding the nauseating modern Werewolf tropes. You get immersed in a world that is explained as you go, because even though the main character is a part of the supernatural world, they are woefully uneducated, thus allowing the reader to learn the not so basic "rules" as she does.

Have read this five times and can't wait for the next installment.

A.J. Maguire has crafted a truly delightful and captivating read with Nora and the Werewolf Wedding. This isn't just your average paranormal cozy mystery; it's a whirlwind of vibrant characters, intriguing secrets, and a perfectly paced plot that kept me guessing until the very end.

Nora Grayson, the empathic wizard counselor, is a fantastic protagonist. Her struggle to juggle the chaotic lives of the magical community while keeping their secrets safe from humanity is both relatable and utterly absorbing. The addition of the charmingly enigmatic Constable Derrick King, who manages to pique her interest and offer a financially tempting (if incredibly dangerous) job, makes for a compelling dynamic.

The synopsis promises a wedding fraught with tension, and Maguire delivers in spades. The werewolf family is a dysfunctional masterpiece, with a warring mother and bride, a clueless groom, and a butterfly-obsessed father. This family dynamic alone provides ample entertainment, but the sudden murder of a wedding attendee kicks the intrigue up a notch.

The mystery itself is expertly woven, keeping the reader on their toes with red herrings and surprising twists. Nora, as the prime suspect, faces a race against time to clear her name and uncover the true killer. The danger is palpable, and the stakes feel genuinely high, with the threat of both imprisonment and becoming a delicious werewolf appetizer looming large.

What truly makes this book stand out is Maguire's writing style. It's witty, engaging, and effortlessly blends humor with suspense. The world-building is seamless, bringing the hidden magical community of Boston to life with rich detail and believable characters. The romantic tension between Nora and Derrick is a slow burn that adds another layer of enjoyment to the story.

Nora and the Werewolf Wedding is a must-read for fans of paranormal mysteries, urban fantasy, and anyone who enjoys a good dose of wit and intrigue. A.J. Maguire has created a memorable story with characters you'll root for, and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very last page. I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment in this series!

Completely unexpected and entirely amazing. The blurb does not do this story justice, the world is so cleverly given to you a piece at a time and the story layers the details of Nora's life into this complex investigation in a way that is natural and easy. By the end of this book I felt absorbed into not only the world but Nora herself and invested in following her into her next adventure to see where life takes her.

Although I picked this book by chance thinking it would be an easy but fun read I am so glad I did as I have a new series to become invested in and a new author to watch. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a world where there is more than you can imagine out there and a main character that shows exactly what they are made of when the chips are down and their world is rocked.

The story was splendidly told and the build-up was nicely executed. I really enjoyed reading about Nora and this fresh take on Fairy. Interesting how her powers work and how her caretakers left her in the dark about so many things.

The budding romance between the detective and Nora was sweet and innocent, so far. Looking forward to where life’s curveballs will send Nora and Derrick.

This book has my full recommendation for lovers of fae, magic, parallel worlds and mystic creatures.

I really enjoyed this adventure. Nora was brave, believable, and I loved her character development. The sweet element of budding romance in the midst of adventure and mystery was charming. If you are looking for clean fantasy/mystery, this checks those boxes well. I am excited for the next books! I will absolutely be reading them!

The synopsis of this book does not do it justice! 😱
As soon as I read it, I knew I had to get this book in my hands! And I have to say... It blew my mind!

Nora is a witch, an 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒉, to be more precise, who despite giving marriage advice, has never had a stable relationship of her own. 😖 So... When Constable Derrick King turned up on her doorstep, Nora hadn’t expected to be dragged, unwillingly, to a werewolf wedding, with a killer on the loose, bent on following her, and a murder acusation. 😵‍💫

When in a world full of books about werewolves, A. J. Maguire brings us some fresh air, with an amazingly written fantasy book, full of crime, romantic tension (without being too much), complex characters and their relationships, uniqueluy world building and an interesting plot. 😍

Although Nora is innocent, sweet and kind, this character is not the common submissive woman that some books portray FMC as. Despite not knowing the world very well, Nora is determined and curious, a fighter, even when prevented from doing so in her own way. 🥰 Which makes us love the relationship we've established with Derrick even more.

Although I have to say that my true love is Constable Cade! 🥵🩷

The book leaves open the next adventures of Nora and her relationships. There is a lot to explore in relation to Nora and Derrick. I actually already bought this book and the next one, because I cannot wait to read it again and have my hand full of them!

I truly loved reading this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy and isn't afraid of twists and turns, with amazing vilains you didn't see coming and a huge mystery!

Where has this book been? Why haven't I read it earlier?

"Nora Grayson's adventures" is set to become its own brand - like the Nancy Drew series. It's a "find who the killer is" book with a splash of romance and the deeper course of "but who are we the characters really"?
Of course, what the future holds depends on how the future books evolve and if it can avoid redundancy with other "werewolf- magical fae world- hidden abilities" books. So far it holds true.

I don't have many notes, because I was too busy reading and following along the adventure to make my own guesses on who's who or what.

So far: Nora is a delightful mystery with interesting abilities, and I like that she is sucked into a spying network of some sort. We are introduced to new creatures, akin to slugs if I might spin-off their names?
I hope we'll tag along fun new adventures that don't turn around Nora too much; time will tell!

There is well-placed humour though we also tend towards darker characters; characters are not your typical "wolf-mate" or "sun-like persona"; they seem to have more depth.
It's an action-packed first book and the variety of characters; both in their abilities, their species and who they are, which is fun and refreshing; I can only hope they grow into themselves in the coming books.
We discover a parallel world of the Fae and wizards; I really have high-hopes for the next one!

Five stars, because I can see myself reading it again (also, it's a rather short and light read); and because I can see myself recommending this book. No too big triggers or terrorising scenes, quite accessible for an audience.

The book read more like a regency/steampunk than a modern-day paranormal and was enjoyable overall. This is the first book in a series and the world-building has started, but we have yet to venture into the world of the Bright.

I enjoyed the characters, although I felt Nora needed a little more steel in her spine and a bit more distrust of the stories she accepted without question. The mystery is interesting with many interwoven plots occurring. The villains were not apparent and kept you guessing.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to learning more about Nora, Derrick, and the other Constables.

Thank you to BookSIrens and A.J. Maguire for the ARC.

I really do like this writer.
This is a mysterious whodunit story.
It has quite a bit of suspense in it and working out who were the good guys and who were the baddies was well done.
Nora is an empath, trying to make a living and gets caught up in an adventure not of her choice, along the way she finds out her life was a lie, deceptions were all around her and she didn't even know.
The joy with fantasy books is that you experience different worlds and characters that are also not human, it makes no limit to the adventure that can happen, it's just up to the authors imagination.

I really enjoyed this story! I am a big fan of fantasy - urban and otherwise - and crime fiction so this story was a great joining of the two genres. And while I'm not a big fan of romances, I actually did not mind the romantic tension between the two main characters so it was a definite win for me!

Great characters, a steadily moving plot, interesting setting with room for more stories to come… I'm a pretty satisfied customer and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author!

Someone asked me to read this book. I didn’t really want to because I have had my fill of vampire/werewolf books. I didn’t care that vampires flowed in the sun. I wasn’t on either side. But I promised I would read it, so here I am.

What a fun read. It reads like any other mystery book, but with so many twists and turns. I can’t wait for the next book in the series(hopefully) comes out. I felt like Nora was a smart, but vulnerable protagonist. Keep them coming please?

I found the tale quite gripping. I have always loved the supernatural aspect but the leading bits of lore placed were really intriguing and had me googling things just to delve into them more before I continued reading. I also really enjoyed the characters, not just Nora and Derrick but all the others we get introduced to whom I hope to learn more about in future releases. A really good and easy read with plenty of thrill to keep you engaged!

I thoroughly enjoyed Nora and the Werewolf Wedding. From the first chapter, I was hooked into this mystery-fantasy-romance-whodoneit book. Nora is an empathetic marital counselor and has lived a remarkably sheltered life. Throughout the book, she deals with the dawning realization that she has a lot to sort out in her own life, all while trying not to be killed by the bad guys.

I appreciate that it was a stand alone book with the option for more. I hate cliffhangers. Also, this was a squeaky clean novel with no swearing or sex.
