Story:
A voyage on the Titanic...
Evelyn Gilmore is never excited about leaving Britain, if it means leaving her friends and lovely home behind. But her family is moving to America and they are on board the greatest luxurious ship of the time, RMS Titanic. Thomas Gilmore, Eve's brother takes this journey as an adventure and a beginning to a new life. This is a story of a family's voyage on the Titanic...
Titanic is a beautiful sad story and a historical tragedy which is portrayed really well in Forget me not. Written in 2 perspectives, Eve and Thomas, the book ventures on their journey on board the Titanic until the accident and tragedy where the Titanic hit the iceberg. I loved reading both Eve and Thomas' story and understanding the way they see things in the voyage and I loved how detailed Sue described the setting of the Titanic which makes me feel as if I'm on board of the ship itself. I really enjoyed reading this book while imagining the luxurious life of the passengers on Titanic before the accident occurred and the tragedy the passengers are facing as they try to survive when the Titanic hit the iceberg.
Characters: I really enjoyed reading about the characters in this book, from Eve, Thomas, Bea (their younger sister), their parents and also Hugh and Meggie (the 2 passengers Eve and Thomas meet in the ship). I definitely did not expect a romance at all in this book and although it wasn't the main focus of the book, I really enjoyed reading the development of Hugh and Eve's relationship. They were both so cute and adorable. Sometimes I found Thomas quite annoying and selfish since he is jealous that Hugh seems to like spending his time with Eve more than with him and Thomas feels like Eve is taking Hugh away from him. Eve's mom was a bit harsh towards Eve but her father was really patient and understanding. I love how there are different characters with different personalities in this book!
Overall: Forget me not portrays a bittersweet tale of a family's voyage on the Titanic. I really enjoyed reading this book and the historical aspect of the Titanic's tragedy. If you love Titanic as a setting of a book, you will definitely love Forget me not too!
Thank you Walker Books Australia for the review copy!
This book tells the story of the Gilmores, a fictional middle class family traveling in second class on the maiden voyage of the Titanic in 1912. The story alternates between the third-person perspective of fifteen-year-old Thomas and the first person perspective of his slightly younger sister, Eve. The family has left their home in Southampton, England to immigrate to America and settle in South Carolina. Their younger sister, Beatrice, has weak lungs, and the doctor has said their only hope for her to get better is to move to a warmer climate.
Thomas and Eve feel very differently about the move to America. Thomas is excited for a new home, new life, and new friends. Eve, on the other hand, is devastated to have left her home and friends behind, and is nervous about traveling on the Titanic - something about the ship just gives her a bad feeling. Eve begins to feel a bit better when she and Thomas meet Meggie and Hugh, a brother and sister around their age who are traveling home with their parents to America after a trip to Europe. The four teenagers become friends and Eve even begins to feel something more for Hugh. But then disaster strikes, when the Titanic hits an iceberg and begins to sink.
Forget Me Not is one of the many books about the Titanic released recently, to coincide with the upcoming 100th anniversary of the sinking in April 2012. I have been interested in the Titanic for years, so I am always eager to read a new novel set during the doomed voyage. Overall, I enjoyed this book, it wasn't my favorite Titanic book ever, but it was an enjoyable, quick read. The characters and their relationships could have been a bit more developed, and I wish the ending had been a bit less abrupt. I'd recommend this book to readers who love historical fiction about the Titanic, or who are interested in the subject for the first time due to the upcoming anniversary.
Evelyn and her family are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. They are going to travel across the ocean to a new life in America on the ‘unsinkable’ ship – The Titanic. Evelyn is sad to leave her dog and her best friends behind and has a terrible sense of foreboding as she boards the brand new ship.
‘Forget Me Not’ tells the story of Evelyn’s family on the infamous voyage in Evelyn’s first person point of view and her older brother Thomas’ story in third person.
Sue Lawson is a wonderful Australian author. I have had the pleasure of meeting her on a few ocassions at library events and have read many of her books over the years. I am always impressed by her writing. She has the ability to write a captivating novel with very likeable characters and Forget Me Not was no exception. I love all things related to the Titanic and was caught up in Evie’s story from the start. A wonderful novel.
I've always been a sucker for anything Titanic-related. And I am amazed that I had to create a Titanic shelf for this book! That's just mad. I'm sure I've read other novels set on the Titanic in my life?! Or maybe I've just pored over factual accounts and various movies and telemovies. Let me tell you, this past week on TV has been a treat for me, and there's more to come! :D
So it seemed kind of fitting to read this book today, on April 14th. 100 years to the day since the Titanic struck the iceberg. (Well, give or take a few hours due to different timezones and whatnot.) Actually, I didn't specifically choose the book for that reason. I chose it because I was all hm, I'm seeing Tara tomorrow, can I finish one of the books she lent me before then? And this one was on the top of the pile. It was only when I was about two chapters in that I realised what the date was.
The thing with Titanic stuff is you already know, more or less, how it's going to end. The ship is going to sink. A lot of people are going to die. But the other thing is, you don't specifically know who. It's fair to assume that female characters will probably live and males will probably die, but you can't say for certain unless the story's being told in flashback by a survivor. Or in first person, because it's kind of awkward when first-person narrators die.
I enjoyed the story of the titanic written by a different perspective, I found it very sad but well written with good description. I found I couldn't stop reading as the titanic began to sink. I liked the hint of romance and kind of wish it was taken a bit further, and maybe an epilogue of their lives afterwards. But overall I like the book very much and found it very sad but good
I am on a bit of a Titanic mission at the moment as i love reading anything with a bit of history. I found this book on Goodreads amd just had to read it, however it is a very rare book, kindle version being the only. I really enjoyed it, a very short but sweet book which really gives you some detail. Highly recommend.
This is my comfort book. I will admit it's written for a less mature audience, but this makes it an easy and relaxing read you can finish in an afternoon. I absolutely love the story and it did promt somewhat of a titanic obsession a few years back. The faze has since passed but I still love the book to this day. Would definitely recommend
We read this aloud as a family with older tweens / younger teens over many dinners then followed it up with Titanic movie. Really interesting and relatable.
Very well written. I got emotionally involved reading this. It's always difficult to write about true events such as this but the author did justice to it.
It is a very good book to read. at the start you don't think much of it, in the middle it gets very exciting, but at the end it gets very sad. this book made me cry but it is the best book I have every read.
Forget me not, forget me never ‘Til yonder sun shall set forever
I am going to come straight out and say this book had me blubbering.
As a rule I have stayed away from anything to do with the Titanic as it just isn’t a happy ending. Human error and ego , made a lot of people lose their lives...... and an iceberg . I just haven’t, to this day been able to watch Titanic the movie by James Cameron. It just makes me too sad.

Sure!
Get the truck load of Kleenex ready......
Sue wrote her tale of the Gilmore family setting sail for New York , with a lot of emotion.
The story is told from Evelyn aka Eve , and Thomas her brother’s POV’s.
Eve has bad dreams and is quite fretful of the journey, where Thomas appears to be enjoying the experience.
They each take an alternate chapter and you really get to know them...hence my blubberfest.
Five year old Bea, their little sister is the reason for the voyage to a better climate ,as her little lungs are diseased. Teddy and Bea are a team. Oh , that teddy bear......it tears me up now.
Eve is upset about leaving her friends behind and the worry of the whole voyage. Her mother needed a ‘stinky dead fish slap’ from me the way she talks to Eve....but then you begin to understand a bit of her mother’s behaviour.
A boy catches Eve’s eye by the name of Hugh and we are introduced to some of the Worthington family throughout this story.
Hugh is a bit of a lad and nominates himself as tour guide of the Titanic . I really enjoyed Hugh’s character, he is a fun character who likes to bend the rules.
Sue has taken the reader on a tour via her characters, who mischievously / boldly entered First Class , peeked in the engine room where the ‘black gang’ were hard at work, dip your toe in at the swimming pool, went to the Barber for souvenirs , the hospital and met the staff and generally got us to ‘feel’ the mood of the Titanic and it’s passengers and crew........ready to make me blubber later on. Complete with music and dancing.
The book is broken up into days, just to make me ‘feel’ that much closer to the inevitable blubberfest.
I loved the autograph entries at Eve’s titled chapters. I felt like I was turning the pages of her autograph book. Everybody she asked was putting a little poetry into her pages.
I have read ‘Fateful’ by Claudia Gray, and this is my only other book that weaves the Titanic into the story. I loved what Sue did with her tale of the Titanic and I read it in one sitting.
The thing that I question myself when reading , is, my boys, my hubby, how could I leave them behind? As a mum, it is too hard to think about, but these people, these families had to separate or in some cases chose to stay together and in other cases their class on the ship decided their fate.
Very sad.
The one thing that broke my heart was her stats at the end of the book, showing the different classes and the number of women , children , men, in each class and crew that survived and were lost, just heart breaking stats.
Sue respectfully weaves real passengers/crew’s names into the storyline....again......* snot fest for me *
It is sad and emotional in parts , but that is the disaster of the Titanic. Although this read is about a fictional family and what comes to pass, the real story is not fictional.
I highly recommend this book, Sue wrote it beautifully .

Forget me not is a great book, it describes in detail how the titanic sank through the eyes of brother and sister Evelyn and Thomas Gilmore.
Under going a big move to America The Gilmores board what was said to be the safest most luxurious ship ever built, Thomas is very excited about travelling on the maiden voyage of The Titanic however for Evelyn it is taking her away from everything she knows and loves.
Evelyn had a very unsettling feeling ever since she set foot on the Titanic and soon comes the reason why.
I think everyone would extremely enjoy this book, it doesn't matter how old you are, because I am quite young but still thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book was so heartbreaking. I loved how the author chose to start all of Evelyn's chapters with a "Forget Me Not" quote from the autograph book. One thing I found quite interesting about this book was how it was told from the perspective of second-class passengers traveling aboard the Titanic. All the other books I'd read before were told from the perspectives of first or third class passengers so it was rather nice to have a change. I liked how the friendships developed between the characters further on in the story. Definitely the saddest part for me was when Thomas passed on and the aftermath of it, with the Gilmore family having to deal with it all.
Quite a good version of the Titanic story, especially for younger people who are not familiar with the history (although after the film I guess most people know it). However the book contains nothing new or startling; not necessarily a bad thing, but for those of us well familiar with the tale it makes for fairly stock standard reading. However I did enjoy the writer's style of alternating chapters, relating the tale by brother and sister, with the sister's version in first person and brother's in third person. For me, as an adult, 3 stars. For a younger YA, probably 4 stars.
A tender and beautiful introduction of a terrible tragedy for young readers. The chilling realism left me colder than the atlantic ocean yet Sue managed to weave the Gilmore family's account of their departure from their homeland with the fatalistic journey, with warmth and believable compassion. Yes, we all know the unfortunate conclusion, but it is still hard to comprehend and impossible to read about without shedding a tear or two. A timely release about a unforgettable period of human history.
A book that you know will not have a happy ending but was a captivating story none the less. It is the Titanic story told from the point of view of a teenage girl travelling with her family to the US and a horrifying insight into the collection of errors that caused so many people to perish uneccessarily. Also a comment on the culture of the era with the men gallantly staying aboard the ship even though they knew it meant certain death in order to allow women and children to leave. Would be interesting to see what would happen should a crisis such as this occur in today's world.
This book is based around the 1912 RMS Titanics maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Seen through the eyes of two familys (Gilmores and Worthingtons), it discusses the conditions onboard and emotional state of many paassengers travelling on the ship. For me the book was an absoloute pleasure to read and I found myself constantly engrosed in the book day and night. The author has also included characters who were infact aboard the ship itself when it ventured across the Atlantic ocean. I definetly reccomend this book to all my historical fiction fans out there for a light but historic read.
I really enjoyed this book actually. It was a nice, quick and easy read. I thought it portrayed life on the Titanic, and the associated disaster, accurately, although the conversations sounded barely different from what they would be today. Except for Mother's particular-ness about manners and insistence that Eve behave like a lady, it didn't really feel like it was set in 1912. It's a good book though, and it has an optimistic ending, even in the face of the Titanic sinking.
Well plotted novel that builds slowly to its inevitable conclusion. Thomas & Eve are authentic teens (daring & disobedient) and siblings (moody towards each other, yet fiercely loyal), and their adventure capture the mood and atmosphere of the unsinkable ship well.
I thought forget me not was great because it was the whole story about the titanic! some parts forget me not got boring but if you just kept reading you couldnt put the book down :) overall, I loved forget me not the book :)
