When retired middle-aged lawyer Molly Meagher (that’s Mahar, not Meeger, thank you!) finds a dead body in her snowbank, the fun begins. She gets shot at, firebombed and pestered by a real estate salesman trying to buy her out. Her life is further complicated by a hunky FBI agent who looks at her as a prime suspect, as well as the arrival of a sister she hasn’t seen in decades -who begs to live with Molly while she dies of cancer. Molly wisecracks her way through the investigation, being attacked, her growing attraction to the FBI guy, and dealing with her sister, as well as her issues about being gray-haired and what she prefers to call “plump,”, and her fear of intimacy.
I unknowingly read the second book in this series first so I went back to catch this one. Something about this character, or this author or the setting is so relatable to me. It should take a lot to live up to the title Yooper Woman, but Molly does seem to have the super heroine qualities to make that claim. She's funny, witty and seems to have good common sense most times.
In this first installation, we learn more about how Molly came to live in the U.P., how she met Nate the handsome younger FBI agent and more about her family and background. There's something strange going on on the property surrounding hers. Molly has a penchant for walking into trouble, finding bodies and becoming a target. Someone wants her land but she doesn't want to sell.
I saw where the author repeated the background information in both books. It helps make them stand alone, but it really wouldn't have taken much effort to change it up a bit. It didn't bother me too much but I think if the third book repeats again, that might get annoying. I'll find out as I plan to continue on with the adventures of the Yooper Woman.
Here are a couple of interesting quotes from Frozen Assets:
"I can really understand why people get addicted to opiates. There is nothing quite like the feeling of complete well-being you get from stuff like Oxycontin. Not only does it make the physical pain manageable, it either kills the mental and psychic pain or it makes you just not give a damn, I'm not sure which."
"I love the Iron County Courthouse. Built in 1890, it is a magnificent edifice of stone topped by a bell tower. The Bell rings on the hour and half hour, twenty-four/seven. On a cold clear night, its sonorous peal can be heard for miles."
"I may as well have stuck my finger in a light socket - my whole body buzzed, my Committee was hollering " Watch it, he wants something!" "He can get any woman he wants, what does he want with a graying fatso!" "Relationships take work, you don't want to get involved!" "Run awaaaaaay!"
I'm finding the protagonist to be an entertaining, self-sufficient middle aged woman; the events so far are just slightly far-fetched but the story is good enough that I'm able to suspend disbelief. I'm enjoying this book and hate having to put it down to go to work. I can envision this character being played by a Kathy Bates type of actress - I keep thinking of the "Harry's Law" show when I read this book.
Now that I've completed the book, I do have a couple of objections. While I enjoy reading books written in the first person, I am not a fan of the narrator making "aside" comments to the reader. If its part of the story, fine. Are you telling a story, or having a conversation? The "aside" comments became a distraction to the story for me. Second, I found that the addition of the sister was done clumsily. The sister appears to need care, but after lengthy introduction and back story, she isn't mentioned again until much later in the book. I don't think this character added anything to the story, and it seemed to be a way to lengthen the book without having more action in the main story line. The book started out at a solid 4 but slipped to a 3 star book as I finished reading it. I would still read future works by this author - I loved the setting of this story and could see this becoming a series.
This was a very entertaining read. Being a native of Michigan I loved every minute of this book. The characters in this book come alive as well as all of your senses, the author paints a very vivid picture of the scenery, sights and smells. Enjoy the humor and most of all, enjoy this engaging story.

Great read, enjoy!
Very entertaining cozy type mystery, a little light on the plotting perhaps, with more 'back story' that I felt necessary plus several seemingly unrelated 'side stories' but great characters.
The rambling backstory tended to lose me in places as it was more or less dropped in at random. My assumption is that some of the side stories and family history may be information that will be brought back in future books.
Overall, an amusing and entertaining read and I will pick up more in the series. For me, a main character who is a 60-ish, overweight female chocoholic with a wolfhound as a companion is going to compensate for a number of small sins.
Loved the U.P. setting and the descriptions of the people.
The Kindle edition had a number of formatting issues. Several sentences don't make sense. At 18% in, there is a paragraph that begins in the middle of a sentence. Normally with this type of formatting error, the first part of the sentence is in the previous paragraph. Not in this case.
i got this as a kindle freebie and enjoyed it a whole lot more than i thought i would! the heroine is a 60-ish lawyer living in michigan's UP, and she stumbles onto a body on her property. the yooper jokes are cute as well.
My kind of cozy mystery series, with my kind of main character! I've now had the pleasure to have read several books in this series and can't wait to read even more!
