ONLY TWO PEOPLE OF STATURE AND AUTHORITY RESPECT DON MILKEY, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOROne of them is murdered, and the other one did it. Tracking down the killer is the job of Donald Milkey and Associates, a business enterprise that is a work of fiction in its own right.Helen, Don's girlfriend and associate, carries no weapon, but asks questions with the finesse of a 12-guage shotgun. Garcia serves as Milkey's right hand man when he is not fixing the plumbing in their apartment building. Don's young nephew and technical advisor, Jake, can get into any place in the world, except a bar. There are other helpers with lesser resumes.A less-than-professional staff, an absence of a business office, a budget supplemented by his part-time security jobs, all appear to be limitations to the Milkey and Associates investigation. But not much in this detective novel is as it seems. Indeed, to Milkey, he has sufficient resources for the job.
First time I read this author but I chuckled all the way through the story. The perfect light-hearted holiday read but still with its more serious moments.
Don Milkey is a great addition to the detective mystery genre. An ex-cop, struggling to make ends meet as a Private Investigaor, he has more than his share of demons in the baggage he lugs around. The cast of characters who assist him are as unlikely as they are enjoyable. When people get to know him, they step forward to help. In addition to his girlfriend and his English language challenged apartment maintenance man, the ghetto grocery store owner around the corner and the homeless woman running from the police fall victims to the Milkey charisma and play key roles.
He's an unlikely package in which to find charisma, but as the story unfolds you realize its source arises from caring. He cares about his clients, his friends, doing the right thing (within reason), and even casual acquaintances. You begin to realize that caring too much probably created a lot of his personal troubles, but by this time it's an addiction.
His wry sense of humor supplies him and his friends with a sense of balance and a lot of enjoyment for the reader. The dialog is top notch and the conversations between Milkey and Garcia the maintenance man keep you smiling when you're not laughing out loud.
Zeller must have a good handle on current technology. Milkey and his friends make use of low cost but leading edge technology to follow the trail to the source.
Not surprisingly, the crime is the result of greed and corruption, but the journey to find the source is well worth the ride. It kept me turning pages into the wee hours.
