[Siren Classic Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, M/M, shape-shifters, light BDSM, spanking, sex toys] Sushi or soul mate? What a ridiculous question. There is no doubt in shark-shifter Byron's mind that what he feels for seahorse Skylar is genuine. But Byron is well aware of the difference between them. He is a monster, and that puts sweet-natured Skylar out of his reach. In his fear of hurting Skylar, he pushes the seahorse away. But when Skylar is attacked, Byron knows he cannot stay away from Skylar anymore. Skylar has always been searching for his soul mate, that special person he would share his life and innocence with. When he meets Byron, he instantly feels the bond between them. In Byron's power and forcefulness, he finds an anchor. But even as they attempt to build a life together, there are still many challenges ahead. When Skylar unexpectedly becomes pregnant, Byron will have to learn to deal with fatherhood and protect his new family from an unexpected threat. ** A Siren Erotic Romance
Scarlet Hyacinth was born in 1986, in a Romania still struggling under the weight of the communist regime. As a young girl, she started studying the English language and fell in love with books. After a childhood spent devouring hundreds of pages of fantasy literature, Scarlet found her calling. While at uni, she discovered with the help of a dear friend that she had a knack for writing. The rest, as they say, is history, or rather, lots of hard work and sleepless nights. Today, she can only say with a smile that nothing is impossible and that no matter what others say, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough.
2.5 I learn all kinds of things when I read MM. Like the fact that sharks have two dicks.
Skylar is a seahorse shifter and he's had the hots for Byron the shark shifter for a while but Byron's not interested. Or at least that's what Skylar thinks. In fact, Byron is very interested but is afraid of hurting the delicate looking Skylar with his massive size and BDSM kink. He's also afraid of scaring him off with the two dicks thing. But Skylar finds that he enjoys pain and having two cocks inside him so it's all good.
The writing and the plot made me roll my eyes so much I thought they'd fall out of my head but I decided to just go with it and it turned out to be an OK read. It's the 5th in the series but I wasn't too lost not having read any of the others. Except I still don't know what Byron does. He made a big deal about his work but they never really talked about it. I think he's the head of the shifter Mafia but I could be wrong.
There were a couple things that I didn't like. I wanted more BDSM. There was some mild spanking and one whipping at the beginning and then nothing until the very end. After all the talk from Byron about how past lovers couldn't keep up with him, it was a bit of a let down. It's a BDSM Seahorse!
The other thing is Skylar not telling Byron he could get pregnant. That was just not cool. When Byron is completely shocked that he knocked Skylar up and then yells at him that maybe he should've let Byron know that this could happen, Byron's excuse is, "I didn't know how to tell you." Then Byron is the one that feels bad for yelling at him. Arhggg. That shit bugs me. A LOT.
Still, this was better than the dolphins but not as good as the orca. I'll probably read some of the other ones because there are swans and squirrels and hummingbirds mating with wolves and stuff which sound interesting. I'll probably also read the ones with these two's kids. Maybe.
And here are some NSFW pictures of sharks with two cocks because I just can't help myself. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Groan worthy in its humans versus shifters epic battle plot, this little story also features aquatic babies, a dungeon of sexual pleasures, a realistic mpreg (finally got the details I've been craving), and a very well-endowed shark shifter.
I am only adding the half of a star because of the author's creativity to come up with the ludicrous plot behind this story. I did read the reviews prior, and so I knew what the basic plot was about, but man this was a terrible book!!
I read a lot of trashy, trashy stuff so I am not coming from a place of shock or being offended by the content. There were a few moments of potential in the story - but they were overshadowed by the unfortunate details.
I also read some reviews that did not like the whole BDSM aspect of the book. Really that content doesn't bother me, I am not a stranger to BDSM stories. Unfortunately that aspect of the book didn't really fit the vibe of the story or flow well with the rest of the plot. It was almost like the author wanted to write a story with a BDSM aspect to it and threw it in to the mix. It could have been completely left out and probably helped to smooth the rest of the wacky plot and diminish some of the incongruities of the tale.
Wow, this is one of the harshest reviews I have ever done - I am usually so easily entertained - but this one had me struggling to get to the end. Almost worth reading for the whole WTF factor - almost - maybe if it had cost only 99 cents.
There's no way I can write a review of this and keep a straight face, really. I don't normally mind mpreg, but I spent nearly the entire time in disbelief that I was reading about sharks and seahorses mating, and I don't know if the plot could be considered a plot.
So, as I can't find it in me to write a serious review, I will just point out the things that made this one of the strangest mpregs I have ever read.
Firstly, Byron the shark isn't just any shark - he's a megalodon, a massive, prehistoric shark who can eat whales. His genitalia is so massive that other shifters freak at the sight of it (is it PC to call him hung like a horse?), but further on I find out that he's got two dicks. Yes, two. Double the pleasure, double the fun.
Secondly, his mate Skylar is a seahorse. He is the size of Byron's tooth when they are both shifted. For a virgin, he is very eager to get Byron massive two-dicked genitalia in his untried hole without very much preparation. Did I mention Byron being humongous?
I admit there were times when I found Skylar adorable (and yes, I put the sequels about their sons in my TBR), but I was really put off by the whole shark/seahorse thing. Though, I have to say they weren't together sexually when shifted.
This book is definitely the best volume in the series so far, for several reasons. One is that the emotions and conflict between the two main characters, Skylar the seahorse and Byron the shark, are intense and gripped me from the very beginning. Not even the addition of the (in my opinion) totally superfluous initial BDSM elements could stop me from liking the way I was pulled into really caring about the two of them. The other reason is that the story itself, with all the obstacles that turn up, is great and put an entirely different context around the series. A true surpise, this really added to my enjoyment.
Skylar, of course, is easy to like. He is competent in his job and loves helping people; in many ways he cares more about others than himself. And that is part of his problem. Even though he seems so confident, now that I got to know him better, he has a very hard time. His internal struggle, his need for the man he adores above all others, is causing quite a few issues. Luckily, he is stubborn and has enough courage to get what he wants.
Byron has, so far, seemed like a cold and brutal guy. While he still ramains the same person, seeing things from his point of view totally changed my mind about him. He loves Skylar more than anything and the way he goes about protecting his mate is wonderful. He may be dominant in the bedroom (an aspect that makes sense in the context of who he is, even if I think it was overdone), but he takes care of Skylar and teaches him his limits.
If you liked the other books in the series so far, you will love this one. It is full of hot seahorse-on-shark action, a great story, and some surprising twists and turns, and I really enjoyed reading it.
I liked this story, and I like the series, but this loses two stars for two reasons.
The first was that there were several missing words. This would not commonly drop a rating so drastically for me, but paired with the second reason, the impact is exacerbated. The second reason is really big for me (obviously).
There is a point, late in the story, when a main character contacts and speaks with a high ranking military officer. The branch of the military was the US Navy. The author did not seem to do any research at all on the US military because she referred to a naval officer as "general" on multiple occasions. I'm sure that I am quite over-zealous in my reaction to this, but I find it to be a monumental error that could have so easily been avoided.
I will continue to read the remainder of this series, but I'm rather disappointed in this book primarily for the latter issue.
typical Scarlet Hyacinth serial romance. nothing fantastic, nothing so bad it can't be finished. what is typical Scarlet Hyacinth? imagine a shorter harlequin romance but with no t&a (see, i was going to write no surprise pregnancies, but... yeah.).
out of sheer laziness, i will be using this as my template for all serials by UNLESS motivated otherwise by markedly good/bad writing: Scarlet Hyacinth joyee flynn sunny day lynn hagen stormy glenn carol lynne gabrielle evans
I like Skylar & Byron, but I'm definitely skipping most of the sex now. The was a fun addition. The plot at the end was good too although I doubt reconcialtion would be so simple. We got an epilogue set 10 yrs after, clearly paving way for the next generation. How that'll be handled I don't know since the kids are at slighly different ages.
My favorite book of the series yet! I really loved this...I loved the couple, I loved the action and drama and how it really moved the overall plot ahead. Loved the epilogue setting things up for future couples, I can't wait to read more!
I'm going 3 stars for originality and the fact that even though it was sometime way over the top ridiculous, I was completely entertained. Two dicks? What? Come to mama! lol. Sweet story about a seahorse and shark shifter with all the craziness that match would entail. Fun book.
Can I just say that this book didn't work for me and leave it at that? No? Well, how about I not rant about the poor proofreading and we call it a day!!! On a different day, I may have loved this story... but today wasn't that day! :(
Well, this book was so not my thing on several levels:
1. The BDSM. So not my thing! And as little as I know about BDSM, this seemed just... wrong. Like Byron, who was supposed to be doing that stuff all the time, didn't quite know what he was doing. It's my understanding that during BDSM the "Dom" is supposed be clear about what he wants from his "sub", but Byron seemed to send mixed messages, which must have confused poor inexperienced Skylar no end. But Skylar seemed to like it in the book... I didn't like to read about it though.
2. What was this weird thing with apparently all shifters being gay? And all of them getting married (or mated) with other men and having children - only boys, of course - who the parents seemed to expect to grow up to be gay too. How do any of these species procreate? They can't all be seahorses or other kinds of shifters who can have male pregnancies, can they?
3. I haven't read the 4 books previous to this one in this series. Big mistake. Huge mistake, apparently. I had somehow gotten the impression that these books were at least somewhat stand-alones, but that's not the case. When all the other couples, families and friends came into the book I realized that I had no chance what so ever to understand who they all were and how they were connected, since they had obviously had their own books where their stories had ben told.
4. Like I already mentioned, I'm not a fan of BDSM, and I thought that this would be my biggest problem with this book. Not so. My biggest problem was the "psychic link" that the mated shifters shared with their mates in this book. That was just creepy! I'm not a fan of "mates" and "insta-love" in general, but this was just... Oh! I can't even find words to describe how horrible I thought it would be to be able to read someone's mind - and to have them be able to read mine! Now I'm going to sound like a complete psycho, I know, but I myself would rather die that let anyone inside my head! Anyone!
So why, after I've listed all the stuff I didn't like about this book, am I giving it 2 stars instead of just 1? Well, I'm clearly not the target reader for this kind of book, and the people who like this this genre might find it appealing. The writing felt a little rushed, like maybe both the author and the editor should have gone through the manuscript one more time before releasing it, but it wasn't horrible. I'm not going to read any more books in this series, but at least now I can say I've tried it, and it's still not for me.
One day I was browsing the Internet for nothing in particular and I saw a picture of two male seahorses carrying their babies (not big in bioligy, but from what I understand, female seahorses lie the eggs and male seahorses carry the babies in their pouches until their are ready to leave the "nest"). I thought, this would be a good plot bunny and they I thought, impossible no one has already written it and with a short internet search I found two titles The Shark Who Rode a Seahorse & The Seahorse Who Loved the Wrong Lynx.
The first one is more traditional (if traditional can be used in a paranormal shapeshifter story...) and it is about a shapeshifter shark falling for a shapeshifter seahorse. Of course Byron and Skylar, the human version of them, are reflecting their shifted forms, and Byron is all domineering towards the cute and shy Skylar. Indeed, Byron and Skylar know each other, but Byron is trying to avoid Skylar as much as possible, not trusting himself near the fragile man. But of course, as soon as Skylar needs protection, Byron will be there ready to claim his mate.
It's a cute story and most of the focus is on the expected outcome, Skylar will get pregnant with Byron, and he will carry one little shark and one little seahorse. Maybe the nice twist is that, the baby shark will inherit his seahorse father attitude, and instead the baby seahorse will take upon his shark father, becoming in the end a spoiled brat young man, who will star in the second book, The Seahorse Who Loved the Wrong Lynx.
The second pair, seahorse Layton and lynx Preston is maybe more "strange" than expected, and in a way, it's odd to think two really different creature, one from the water, the other from the ground, can not only mix, but having babies together. But that is indeed a futile reasoning, this is paranormal fiction and everything is possible.
Layton and Preston's story is more comedy than that of Layton's parents; from Layton's bratty behavior to him getting knocked up the first time he had sex cause he wasn't considering the option.
Anyway, these two stories filled my impromptu thought of a story involving a shapeshifter seahorse and male pregnancy.
My fav book in this series. I think Skylar and Byron's couple is the cutest and most harmonical in this series so far. As for BDSM part, imo it wasn't all that much of it in the story. Still it's lifestyle/kink of one of the main characters.
I admit the little punishings/BDSM scenes written and presented here were rough around the edges, a bit sketchy maybe, not without some faults (mainly because some readers took it not so lightly as to whys and hows of "punishments" and reasons behind them). I suppose given the possible words limit it was hard for author to add more explanations or go deeper into BDSM aspect of this book (since it wasn't the main idea). While I practice BDSM myself I could understand some little things behind the spankings, "whippings" etc. 1) Since Skylar is a novice there were never in any way full scenes which usually are longer and more elaborate. BTW nowhere it is mentioned that Skylar was whipped till he actually bled o_O where was the word blood??? 2) "Whip" may actually refer to a flogger whip which is a much lighter and softer device with soft leather tail/s (and it can make something close to "swooshing sounds") + whip is usually heavier and it's hard to produce any sounds that "swoosh" unless it's a full or heavy blow.
Anyway I liked this book. Previous installments are very good reads as well. What I liked in previous books is that all characters and couples/possible couples take part in them =)
Wow...
I have to agree with another review, I did Not care for the BDSM part of this story. I like the series and a lot happens but that first "scene" was a little much.
I just don't know what to write here. I enjoyed this book. I went from The Lamb Who Cried Wolf straight to this. While there's a lot of references to the previous books, it's straightforward enough that you can pretty much figure things out and stay with this story.
I thought this story was cute. A little melodramatic, but overall, cute.
I think the book is best described by Leah's review. Her review was what sold me on the series. There are some spoilers in there, but not pivotal ones as far as I'm concerned. You can skip it if you'd rather not know intimate details and be surprised by it when you read it. Haha.
***TRIGGER WARNING: Descriptive scene of attempted sexual assault on an MC in the first chapter. The assault is stopped right before anything happens, but there are little flashbacks throughout the rest of the book. I didn't finish this because I just lost interest 75% in, so I don't know if there are any other attempts by the bad guy later on.***
I'm putting this one on my DNF shelf, but that's on me. I kind of just lost interest in this particular book in the series and I didn't want to waste my time finishing a story I wasn't really into. I will be reading a few of the other installments, though.
Pues a este punto de mi vida ya no me sorprende nada, pero que jodido cliché lo de él protagonista pasa por un suceso traumatico y solo se siente “seguro” con el otro protagonista
Not a book of literery value! I chose this one because it had mpreg, I always search for new books that have that theme, but they are usually suggary sweet, very dramatic, very badly written or all of that together. This one sadly, was no different. You'd think the title would have made me cautious already, but hey it looked great pointwise for our team and so I soldired on and read the thing. The good news, it was not totaly horible and actually had a lot of our searched items etc.
Plot, there was one, it's not just porn, mind you. It was just not a very good plot.Skylar is a seahorse shifter and Byron is a shark shifter. One is a social butterfly, the other somewhat of a mob boss. Skylar is sweet and waiting for the right person and Byron likes to play as a Dom. They don't seem very suited for each other, but after Byron rescued Skylar, when he was abducted, the seahorse shifter became quite interested in the shark. When Byron rescues Skyler from being raped, he is forced to admit to his own feelings for the seahorse shifter and that he found his true mate. Yes, it's insta-love after the mating and as a seahorse Skylar can become pregnant and does. What I found hard to believe is that Skylar, a virgin, after he was nearly raped would have no problem with BDSM for his first true sexual experience. Byron has two cocks like a shark and he says himself that experienced lovers had problems taking him in, but Skylar after some hasty preparation doesn't?
Well I threw all disbelieve aside and surprisingly the story didn't end there. No the shifter who nearly raped Skylar was a wolf and of a fraction, that was against inter species matings, especially between prey and predator. So he exposes the shifter to the humans on TV during a game. It's on Byron to stop a mass slaughter and he and Skylar, with the help of their friends manage to convince the president of the USA to reach an agreement. I don't know about the other countries, since Byron and Skylor didn't live there. Skylar gives birth to twins and all is well for now.(The series has 14 books)
So edits, as in yes please it could really use some! Less instant love would be great as well, but when they mate there is a mental bound and they are in each others heads, which doesn't sound great to me, but hey it's their problem.
The book reads like a soap opera and I find myself slightly curious about other characters mentioned in this story, but I'm not sure if that's enough to make me read more of them, if I don't need them for a challenge since they have a variety of shifters.
I read this book for a group challenge. I thought it would be silly going in and didn't expect to love it. The best I can say about it is that it made me laugh a couple of times (although I don't think those parts were supposed to be funny).
The second half of the book was just plain dull.
This is book number five in the "Meal or Mate" series (and that's funny enough right there), so the main characters have already met and developed an attraction in previous books. Would I have liked this book more if I'd read the previous ones first? I don't know but I doubt it a little. However, there seem to be some really good reviews so maybe I'm wrong.
The seahorse, Skylar, is an incredibly feminine and sometimes even childish character. I had a hard time picturing him as a man. I've read M/M books before and never had this problem before. Male characters, no matter how submissive or sensitive are usually quite clearly male. This one wasn't.
I will have to include some spoilers from this point on.
At the beginning of the story, the seahorse is
The BDSM element felt out of place among the rest. Just one more odd thing in an odd book.
Later, it's time for the seahorse to spring his own little surprise and that one had me laughing for quite a long while.
After that, the book gets dull. They become a couple very quickly and the rest of the story is about the complications of being a shifter among humans and trying to make the world safe for their children.
The connection between the characters gets magically established the first time they have sex because they develop a psychic link and it feels like the author considered that enough and didn't bother to give us any real emotion in the scenes.
For a shifter book, there's no shifting to speak of until the end, when the shark uses his massive form to scare the military men on the boats attacking other shifters.
Can't say I'd recommend this book to anyone but i'm glad it was at least partially funny.
This one is rated slghtly lower than the others in the series. Mainly because really it's even more out there than the first ones. There were just a few things that were more incongruous than before...
Byron has popped up in the previous books. And while it's always been made clear that he is an unusual person even for a shifter, it's not until this book that we find out how unusual... he's not just a normal shark, no he's a prehistoric shark...a megalodon. And due to a "genetic twist" in his human form he has (like sharks do) a double penis... So twice the pleasure right? Yes, maybe but Skylar is a seahorse... and a virgin to boot. So having sex means in principle being DP'd every time... that would make life interesting.
Add to that the mpreg (which I really don't an issue with) and overall you are left with a story that is even more out there than usual. So while I enjoyed the book, I really can't give it more than the three star rating. But I'm continuing on with the series. I need to know how the rest of it pans out...
While I enjoyed the story, I didn't find the romance between Skyler and Byron all that compelling. The romance felt overall lukewarm. Part of a series, I had not read any of the previous books, but had no trouble reading it as a standalone, even with numerous cameos of past MC's. As previously mentioned, both main characters were likeable, and the storyline was fun, but didn't love them as a couple. As a first time reader of this author, I wish that there had been mention of Bdsm content because its not a preferred trope, and those sections didn't flow well with the story and felt stilted. I did enjoy the different species mating, And absolutely loved the idea of a meglodon shifter. I am always partial to an aquatic shifter story. Enjoyed the book but probably won't read more in the series as this author's writing style wasn't loved.
Seriously, Scarlet Hyacinth, can you write a more detailed 500+ page version of this & release it again as m/m romance-heavy urban fantasy? Shape-shifter fic doesn't delve into pre-historic beasties as much as it should, so YAY to this for even trying.
Byron is possibly the most interesting character in the 10 books I've read in this series but the book never fleshes out why he is the way he is. An entire second book just for that would have been nice, especially before they have kids who might be just like him and would have to deal with the same genetic issues. Skylar is okay when he isn't being insultingly over-feminized and I like the way his initial trait of just having better social skills than Byron matures into being the family's (urgh, the feminine version is the only word to use) matriarch.
