[Siren Classic Erotic Alternative Fantasy/Paranormal Romance, M/M, demons, shape-shifters, HEA] Darling or dinner? For incubus Alexis, shark-shifter Morgan is both, and so much more. But when Alexis is severely disfigured, Morgan also becomes a dream beyond his reach. After all, Alexis is a sex demon. The only thing he has to offer is his beauty, and with that gone, so is Morgan's incentive to stay by his side. Morgan knows how hard it was for Alexis to surpass the trauma of his scarring. His love for Alexis goes beyond appearances. Torn between his natural instinct to claim his mate and the desire to protect fragile Alexis, he refuses to leave the incubus. But there are still those who don't agree with the coupling between a shifter and a magical creature, and Alexis still has many secrets to reveal. Can Morgan convince Alexis of his own worth, or will they be parted by their own fears and the machinations of others? ** A Siren Erotic Romance
Scarlet Hyacinth was born in 1986, in a Romania still struggling under the weight of the communist regime. As a young girl, she started studying the English language and fell in love with books. After a childhood spent devouring hundreds of pages of fantasy literature, Scarlet found her calling. While at uni, she discovered with the help of a dear friend that she had a knack for writing. The rest, as they say, is history, or rather, lots of hard work and sleepless nights. Today, she can only say with a smile that nothing is impossible and that no matter what others say, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough.
This is one of the emotionally most intense books of the series so far. It may have to do with the fact that it tells the story of the first shifter mating with a magical being, or it could be that I found the characters to be totally captivating. Most likely, it is a mix of both, and since I am always fascinated by cross-cultural and interspecies pairings, this tale offered a very rich ground for discovery of new and interesting details about this world.
Morgan, the half-shark/half-seahorse shifter is definitely a fascinating mix between his strong shark heritage and the gentler seahorse side. I enjoyed getting to know him better (after having 'met' him in the last book). Even though I was yelling at him for not being more certain about his love for Alexis, I could see how the incubus's different background would be an obstacle. It isn't that Morgan doesn't try; there are some barriers between him and Alexis which stem from lack of understanding. Finding out what they are and overcoming them takes time. Thank God Morgan is as stubborn as he is patient!
Alexis, the first incubus to venture out into the shifter world when he enrolls into the new shifter university (see the previous book), definitely hasn't got it easy. There are things he doesn't know about incubi, since he isn't fully mature when he leaves home, and there is a lot of prejudice (born of not-knowing) that he has to face in the shifter world. He does the best he can, ends up making lots of mistakes, but always manages to survive and learn. He is extremely tenacious, loyal to the point of self-sacrifice, and deserves a happy ending more than most.
It was wonderful to see how the differences between these two slowly emerged, confused everyone, even antagonized a few people, before they were solved. This sort of process is very realistic, and even though the characters in this book are totally made-up and mythical, their problems and reactions are very human. Their paranormal status only makes these issues more visible. If you like cross-cultural and interspecies couples, if you enjoy learning about a slightly different paranormal world and if you like this series, you will probably like this book as much as I did.
This is a fun series that is full of surprises. From the title and the cover, one expects some ridiculous plotlines, but instead, there's a richness of emotion and depth in this shifter series.
This installment of the Mate or Meal series doesn't skimp on the story. There's a wonderful world of shifters to read about in The Demon Who Fed on a Shark. Following up on the groundwork laid by the previous book, we get to see more of the prejudices between the paranormal species.
The troubles that Morgan and Alexis went through to be together was touching to read. It's not too angsty and there's a lightness of touch with how their relationship issues are resolved.
I have to give props to Ms. Scarlet Hyacinth. I was expecting silly fluff but what I got was an emotionally charged story that was mature in its execution. It was thoroughly enjoyable. Who woulda thunk it?
This is a fun and light series and there is a flair of an ongoing dramatic plotline with various and interesting characters. You can read this book as a standalone, but you'll derive a larger enjoyment if you read the previous books in this series. In this book - there is a lot of ongoing tension and drama of the seperated lovers, this tension is lightened with fun sexy times and a fun cast of characters from previous books.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Alexis and Morgan because of the incubus/shifter pairing. They faced different issues than the other shifter couples, mostly because of Alexis being a sex demon, his seductive powers and the way he was required to feed. But Morgan was absolutely perfect for him with his gentle dominance and loving reassurance, especially after Alexis was injured in the fire. The dynamics between the various family members added some nice tension to the story but after a while I seriously wanted to slap a few people upside the head. Like Layton and Skylar. Especially Skylar. Even though his actions were somewhat understandable because Morgan was his son, I was extremely peeved with his behavior. He seemed to have conveniently forgotten all the grief his own parents caused him when they disapproved of him mating Byron. And then to turn around and be so cold to Alexis and doubt not only the baby's paternity but also the mating bond between Alexis and Morgan (who was definitely old enough to be able to recognize his own soul mate), it just made him seem like such a hypocrite. Maybe I'd feel better if they gave Alexis a sincere apology. Now Layton's behavior was easier to excuse because of his age and confusion in his own love life. I am looking forward to reading his story (if Skylar butts the hell out) and I hope to hear more from Rhys too. I loved how protective he became of Alexis. Go Rhys! (And boo once again to Skylar for being such an asshat!)
The Demon Who Fed on a Shark by Scarlet Hyacinth Mate or Meal, Book 7 3 Stars Reviewed for www.heartsonfirereviews.com
I enjoyed the pairing of Morgan, a gentle giant of a shark, and Alexis, the sex demon. Alexis was severely burned in the previous book in this series and is filled with low self esteem and self doubt. After all, who is he if not a beautiful incubus who's main talent is sex? Well, Morgan knows that there is much more to Alexis than that and his love and support never waiver. This book felt more in-depth and brought out a range of emotions while reading it. The problems that Morgan and Alexis face together are very different and more serious then we have seen in previous installments of this series. I must say that I have one niggle, Skylar, one of Morgan's father's treated Alexis with so much disdain and contempt that I wanted to smack him. I understand his mistrust of Alexis considering some events that happened, however, it continued through the whole book and he never even apologized for his behavior when it was proven that he should. He treated Alexis worse than his parents treated Byron when they mated. I am looking forward to the next book.
Morgan the son of the shark and seahorse shifter from a previous book, has found his mate or at least he thinks so. Alexis is a sex-demon and while now different shifters were mating, a mating between different races wasn't as common. While Alexis was hurt and is still badly scared from the incident, Morgan stood by him, even going so far as defending Alexis before the others parents. However something goes wrong while they try to bound and the couple split up. Each one hurt in the process. It takes a small miracle to bring them both together and even more important, to get their families to accept their chosen mate. The writting hasn't improved and there are still a lot of errors, but I liked the characters more. At least I felt sorry for Alexis, who really had to fight some prejudice thrown his way by the shifters. There was a lot of drama and it did remind me a bit of a soap opera, but it wasn't a hardship to read this story. The characters and plot was moving quick enough and it wasn't all about sex. I think I might read this series more like a guilty pleasure. Like a soap opera it has the ability to suck you in and I give it point for that!
Wow, I wasn't expecting how much I'd end up liking this book, but I do. Despite the title, the story is very serious and filled with angst (not too much, but enough). I love Alexis even though he doubted Morgan's love for him and their mate-bond. I also love that Morgan fought for Alexis despite his family's disapproval, and that he chose Alexis above all others
I just didn't like Morgan's family in this one. I know that they were worried about him, but they hardly gave Alexis a chance even when his reasons for leaving Morgan became clear (totally unfounded but I suppose love does crazy things to people, magical or not). I had total dislike for Skylar and Layton... but I suppose they did redeem themselves in the end and there's even a chance that Alexis and Layton could become good friends.
typical Scarlet Hyacinth serial romance. nothing fantastic, nothing so bad it can't be finished. what is typical Scarlet Hyacinth? imagine a shorter harlequin romance but with no t&a (see, i was going to write no surprise pregnancies, but... yeah.).
out of sheer laziness, i will be using this as my template for all serials by UNLESS motivated otherwise by markedly good/bad writing: Scarlet Hyacinth joyee flynn sunny day lynn hagen stormy glenn carol lynne gabrielle evans
I love Morgan! Alexis became a bit of a mess. He should have been more secure as it was obvious Morgan was stronger than one who could be put under thrall by one who wasn't even trying! It all worked out well in the end because Morgan really fought for Alexis despite his family being all out against it.
Skyler and Layton were a bit stupid in this book as well.
I liked the story and the progression of the plot. I rate this story as 4 stars marked down to 3.5 because of several word choice errors (They seem to be the product of an ESL writer.) that could easily have been corrected by an editor. I did, however, like the story so much that the 3.5 stars round up instead if down.
I really really liked this one Alexis is proably my favorite character by far. I hated the way he was treated and my only complaint would be that I still felt that he never got justice in the end. I would have loved for everyone to admit that they were wrong about him, etc... But I loved their relationship and Alexis's journey. I was even emotional a few times. I recomend this one completely :)
Damn, this was an emotional one and knocked me out of my apathy for this series...in fact I'm going to move this to a 4 stars - a 3.5 but as I was growing bored previously I'll be generous. Poor, misunderstood, confused Alexis.
This is my second favorite of the series because it combines the emotional and erotic so well. I was worried after book six which I didn't like but this returned to the tightly crafted MM romance I like.
Like chocolate, with these books you just can't seem to stop at one lol. They are all continuing in the same theme, but there is enough variation to keep it interesting.
