This is a very strong second book to a dystopian/post-apocalyptic series. The events in the beginning are quite mellow as our MC’s try to form their plans to find their loved ones. The story initially provides a general depiction of how two people adapt to the life after an apocalyptic EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack.

Endless travel.
Scavenging.
General boredom.

“It sucks to be a survivor of an EMP. There’s nothing to do.”

For a little while, Cassie and Chris find short moment of peace and rest but since it’s a state of emergency and general chaos, of course it doesn’t last when Cassie is taken captive and becomes enslaved by the Omega soldiers (the bad guys whose real identity is still in shadows) and Cassie was sort of taken back to history and had to go through the ff. for several weeks:

Concentration camp.
Torture.
Forced labor.
Humiliation (particularly by wearing potato sack clothes and eating concrete bread and flavored water soup. )

* It’s funny though that despite all these bad things, Cassie is still worried she’d be arrested by fashion police. Lol.
* This particular attitude of the heroine is what made me feel very fond of this story.

Oh and speaking of history, the plot intensifies when a group of militia men enter the story to free the prisoners and implement guerilla war fighting tactics and guess who has become the leader of the free army?

The hunter becomes the hunted as the militia men and women (including Cassie) led by the steady, reliable, confident, logical and let’s not forget super hot Chris aim to create chaos upon the Omega. Constant attacks and battles mean more adventure (so yay!) but less romance (so bummer!).

What is good in the situation though is that while in many people such experience brought out the worst in them, our heroine learned or is forced to mature and grow up. She used to be just a speck of nothing in the used to be big busy world but now she has a clearer purpose.

“I’d never thought I’d fit into a society like this, but life has a way of surprising you. For the first time in my life, I actually feel like I belong somewhere.”

· * Cassie, I’m cheering for you and so is Pikachu!

That twist in the ending, I’ve predicted it very early on in the story but I’m not really bothered by that. If anything, I was just elated when it already happened.^^

Defeating Omega is an impossible feat but the Freedom Fighters will keep fighting for freedom, for normalcy and for what they lost. They will keep doing the right thing.

Engaging writing. Funny and witty narration in the midst of war and chaos. Strong, admirable heroine and smoking hot, perfectlicious hero. What more can you ask for?!

And that concluding sort of persuasive speech by the heroine, more cheers for you, Cassie girl! Woohoo!

Three words...Romance, action, and adventure

The theme for these novels is a great one indeed. A perfect dystopian novel if I have to say so myself. :) Summer takes the reader to a world that we are all secretly afraid of in the backs of our mind. The one where a foreign military takes over our beloved USA. Summer’s view on the now common-place dystopian idea makes it even a more of a reality.

State Of Chaos is the second book in the Collapse Series. It picks up about 2 months after State Of Emergency ended. Cassidy and Chris are trying to stay hidden from the Omega forces to avoid being arrested and shipped off to a death camp. All the while looking for Chris's family and Cassidy's dad. But soon Cassidy finds herself in a work camp helping harvest food to feed the Omega forces. This novel is about her rescue and Chris and Cassidy's working with the "Freedom Fighters" to take our country back.

Cassidy. It seems as if this female lead character happens to be the most real and vibrant (fictional) person I know. She is so stubborn and sarcastic sometimes all I can do is shake my head. She loves Chris quietly and will do to anything to get back to her loved ones. I was very proud of how far she came in the second book. And Chis. Ex Navy Seal, Chris....long hair, muscular, swoon worthy, Chris. OK that's all I have to say about Chris - you get the picture! Oh yeah! And Chris Hemsworth should play Chris in the movie. Just sayin'! :) And I believe Summer agrees! :)

Sometimes when you read a novel you just connect and for some reason I just connected with these. I love Summers writing style, the characters, and the setting. It all makes for a wonderful series. If you haven't read State Of Emergency go get it now. Then you will be reaching for State Of Chaos, so just go ahead and get both! You will definitely not be disappointed.

State Of Chaos is one crazy ride of a book. Lord I can't imagine having to survive by myself on my own instincts. I can't imagine the world being over run by a group of rough soldiers wanting things done their way. Well life is like that for Cassidy. She is literally living in a nightmare and the only person to help her through it is Chris who was a Navy SEAL. Surviving in this new Cali is a lot easier said than done but Cassidy knows she must keep fighting. All her friends are gone and her father is missing to so she knows to stay alive she must do what she has to do. Chris is there with her to help her out and she is grateful. That is until one night she is kidnapped by Omega.

Now see with Omega you either do as your are told and follow them or you will be punished. So the idea that Cassidy has of escaping is not very realistic because if she is caught there will be hell to pay. But Cassidy is so determined to escape that she hatches her plan. Will she be able to get away with it or will she be captured? Where is Chris in all of this? I have to say that Summer did a great job of hooking you right in from the very beginning and keeping you there. I could not put the book down and when it was over I was looking for more.

This is a great summer read to read on the beach or at the pool!

Genre: Young Adult Action.

State of Chaos does not make the crossover from young adult to new adult. In spite of the characters's ages, there is a juvenile pretense to the read. In addition, the author relies heavily on quips and action to entertain the reader leaving the storyline very shallow.

The youthful tone is primarily due to the main character, Cassie, who's narration really hurts the book. The side remarks were probably meant to be witty and add personality; for me they were overused, off-key, and distracting. Rather unfortunate considering Cassie has a significant amount of growth in the second half of the book that is likely under-appreciated due to statements like "freaking Rambo is my boyfriend" and "weird on steroids".

The odd coupling of the main characters received lots of criticism after book one, the author crudely addresses this in State of Chaos as Cassie's friend points out the age and personality differences in Chris and Cassie; to which Cassie replies "But we are the same too." Well there you go... This writing strategy is habitual as dialogue is often wordy and annotating.

I'm not going to continue this series, it's not a good fit for me. I feel no chemistry between any of the characters and I'm not into guerrilla warfare.

State of Chaos was filled with jaw dropping, heart pounding, and stomach aching scenes. Summer Lane did a fantastic job from the first page, with the prologue summarizing the previous book, State of Emergency. It was a great way to get thrust back into the adventure, without being heavily bogged down, and not remembering exactly what was going on.

In the beginning of State of Chaos, Cassidy and Chris are heading for a trailer park to hide out. They're on a mission: to find both Chris' family and Cassidy's father, and to survive. It doesn't take long before Cassidy gets taken by Omega, and is forced into a labor camp. The scenes are quite brutal and realistic, making this book appropriate for upper teens and new adults. Quite often, we feel what she feels - heartache, anger, and devastation at their situation. As dire as the labor camp is, things get a lot worse quickly. I won't spoil the novel but I will say this: READ IT NOW.

From not only the first book but throughout the second, we see changes in Cassidy's character as she grows stronger not just physically but mentally. It's a vast improvement from the naive girl that was curious and wanted to check things out, but kept finding herself in bad situations. State of Chaos, was an excellent sequel to State of Emergency. The ending leaves you shocked (but it's not a huge cliffhanger or anything) and in desperate need of the third book in the series.

This book had an enormous amount of action, which I love, but I was let down. Maybe my expectations were set too high from the first book, and I had to force myself to continue reading. Cassie complained throughout the entire book, constantly trying to find ways to make her life more miserable. She should be happy that she is alive when so many were murdered.
Additionally, there was very very little romance. A kiss here and there, but nothing special. Don't know if I will continue the series since it appears to be going downhill.

ORIGINAL REVIEW AT: LITTLE BOOK STAR
Rate: 4.5/5 stars

Wow this book is amazing as the first one, if not, better! I love how there was character development. You could really tell that the characters, especially Chris, became more mature compared to the first book. The writing style is perfect and I love how fast paced the story was. The characters were still witty and there were some awesome action scenes that will make you say YEAH!! KICK HER/HIS *INSERT BODY PART HERE* or sometimes it will just leave your jaw hanging. In this book, Chris and Cassidy are still figuring out who the Omega group is, and who is behind it. Yeah, that’s my 1 sentence vague summary for you all because I really don’t want to spoil it. A little detail would automatically count as a spoiler so NOPE! All you have to know is the characters are VERY kick-assy, funny, and realistic characters. This book involves family, friendship, survival, and trust.

The only thing I didn’t like is I feel like some of the scenes were just impossible for it to happen. The explanation was a bit unrealistic and just too good to be true; I didn’t really buy it. Overall I definitely recommend this series to all of you especially if you’re a fan of dystopian books! There’s A LOT of plot twist especially THE ENDING. Oh my gosh, the ending was a freaking cliff hanger and my mouth was literally hanging. I approve of the romance; there wasn’t any insta-love or love-triangle-fail. This is a series you don’t want to miss out on!

*I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.*

After the cliffhanger ending of State of Emergency, to say that I was excited for the sequel would be a huge understatement. I couldn't wait to see what happened next, and I wanted to know more about Cassidy and Chris. Plus, the world Summer had started to build was becoming even ore intriguing, and I couldn't wait to return to it. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed in this story in the least.

Cassidy is still one of my favorite dystopian heroines. She always stayed determined and strong, and she always tried her best to cope with every situation that came her way. She did a lot of growing in this novel, and became so much stronger. I felt horrible for her, because some of the things she had to go through. However, she learned to trust in her own strength and instincts, instead of needing help from Chris.

Speaking of Chris, I thought he was a great character in this book. He came into a wonderful role, and we got to see how much of a leader he actualy was. I loved seeing him in the situations that happened in this story. I felt like it was a natural thing for his character. However, I also loved seeing his feelings for Cassidy and his family. He was always so loyal and protective of those he cared about. I think that he and Cassidy are going to become my all-time favorite dystopian couple, at this rate.

We met some new characters in this story, as well. I really liked Sophia, even though not much was revealed about her. However, she was a wonderful help to Cassidy, and was always there to keep her from collapsing in stressful situations. Then, there was Harry, whom I never liked. However, he was definitely really interesting. I love the way that Summer Lane writes her characters. With so many characters, I expected them to be one way, and they turned out to be totally different. That takes a ridiculous amount of skill, and I applaud her for it.

The plot of this novel was so action-packed. After the ending to State of Emergency, Cassidy and Chris were looking for where Omega hid their prisoners. After stopping to make camp, and while Chris was hunting, Cassidy got captured and put into an Omega labor camp. After that, the story took off, and the pace never let up. I loved it, and thought it was really well-done. Cassidy went through so many crazy situations, and I loved seeing her character transform.

In short, this was a great follow-up to State of Emergency. I loved the characters, plot, and the fast pace. I think the only reason why I didn't like this one as much was because it didn't have much to do with the whole loss of technology. However, this was very much a fighting book, and I love those. So if you read and liked State of Emergency, I definitely recommend continuing with the series. And after the way this story ended, book three is sure to be ridiculously good.

Words Fueled by Love

Book two picks up 2 months after the EMP hit the United States, specifically the Los Angeles area that the characters know of for sure. Chris and Cassidy are still staying under the radar of Omega, living as nomad's, constantly on the move to avoid being detected by them. Where book one, State of Emergency, was filled with constant action, book two has sporadic action, slowing down in the middle a bit and then picks back up.

We are introduced to a few new characters in this book, some we like and some we really hate and some are mysterious and we aren't sure how to feel about them.

Cassidy depends heavily on Chris. For safety. For warmth. For companionship. She trusts him implicitly - both for her life and her heart. But as far as New Adult books typically go, this one really is tame. Maybe that's why it's listed in Goodreads as both NA/YA? There is little to no language and so far no mature situations have arisen. Chris is 28, 9 years older than Cassidy and she, being 19 when the series starts and still 19 in book two, is not ready to push their relationship any farther physically. But her affection for him grows deeper as they only have each other to depend on. She feels he is so far out of her league that if they had run into each other in any other setting than an apocalypse that he never would've given her the time of day. Since the story is only told from the POV of Cassidy, the reader is left to wonder how Chris really feels about her. His actions sure say he cares deeply for her - but that's all we have to go on.

I really like how nothing is predictable about this story. Just who Omega is, and what countries are a part of the takeover of the United States is still very much in question.

Fans of movies and shows like Red Dawn and Revolution will enjoy this series!

Favorite Quotes:
It's kind of a summary of who Chris is as a person: Steady. Reliable. Confident. Logical.

I was probably the only person in Los Angeles with an emergency go-bag, a getaway car and a preplanned emergency rendezvous point when the EMP hit.

"He's got it bad for you," Sophia grins. I feel myself blushing. "The feeling's mutual."

If anybody would have told me seven months ago that I would be spending my college years as a guerilla warfighter with freaking Rambo as my boyfriend, I would have said they were crazy. But life is weird like that.

We can't give up. We have something worth fighting for. Our families, our homes, our freedom. Normalcy. Those things are precious. Priceless.

Review: State of Chaos was an awesome book! Summer Lane managed to get my attention again from the first page.
This book give you a good look to Omega an who works for them….You also see some of the characters evolve and take the role they were always supposed to me…some are born natural leader and it is the way it had to be.
I am still a very big fan of the relationship between Chris and Cassidy. This relationship also evolves and you can see Cassidy insecurities resurfacing here and there. They go both through things that will change them and their relationship either they want it or not.
Summer introduce a few new characters that I think help the story and Cassidy develop. Some I like some I like to hate and some managed to surprise me which is good.
As for the first opus this book is very well written and flows perfectly. The editing is also very good which might not be the case of all indies books.
The plot is well thought and you never get bored during the story, it even managed to take me by surprised a few time….Kudos for that Summer.
In Conclusion: If you enjoyed State of Emergency you will definitely enjoy State of Chaos. This sequel is full of emotion, action and heartbreaks. I truly believe this sequel secure this series quality and I will be now biding my time until book 3.

Finished book two and guess what five stars!!! Excellent book only took me a couple of sittings to read. Keep up the great work! Get the movie deal done, be careful not to rehash book two for further books, try to capture the magnitude of the progress of the fight...

How I review...
1 star - binned it before half way, please don't write anymore!!!
2 stars - finally binned it after really trying, I mean really trying and I hate to not finishing someth....
3 stars - finished it but boy was that hard work on times, it just about hooked me back in as I was about to dump it
4 stars - great book but it lacked something, something, can't put my finger on it but.... something
5 stars - want more, more books, more movies about the books, more movies about the authors and the making of the movie, just more!!!

After being left hanging at the end of 'State of Emergency', I couldn't wait to read this, the second in the Collapse series.

An EMP has wiped out the US, and a shady organisation called Omega has started running the show, and in this instalment we get to see how they operate and it's frankly terrifying. Stuck in the middle of all of this are our main characters Cassie and Chris.

I don't want to spoil anything so I will just say that this book is a non stop roller coaster, even more action packed than the first, and the main character Cassie has some heavy situations to deal with. I ended the story with a huge lump in my throat and REALLY can't wait for the next book.

Well done Summer on another fab story. If you like YA post apocalyptic/dystopian novels then you won't be disappointed.

State of Emergency and State of Chaos is what Ilsa Bick's Ashes should've been. Minus the zombie kids and creepy old Amish people. I really hate comparing books but in this case I had to do it. This series is just that good.
I like that it's not secretly a romance cloaked with occasional thrills and action scenes. It's first and foremost about survival. I love that Cassidy is a self proclaimed wimp and that her transformation is gradual enough to be believable. She didn't become insta-Shera and is fully aware of her opportunities and capabilities. She's also somewhat self deprecating even though her integrity, morals and ideals prove to be stronger than she credits herself for.
My one hang up is that this book was just too dang short.

Like the first book in the series (State of Emergency), this sequel captured my attention and held it all the way through to the end.

The story line picked up where the other left off and went in a new direction; from running away from trouble to creating it. The plot is original, yet still holds on to the key elements of the first. New characters are introduced, but the others remain.

This second book adds another dimension to the story of Cassidy Hart, while preserving the fast, exciting pace of the first.

If you've read State of Emergency, definitely read State of Chaos. If you haven't read either, please do so. You won't be disappointed.

I liked this book even more than the first. This is one series I will be following. Cassy is running with her friends from a big seemingly foreign army that wants to take over the state and the country. The romance is in the background but it is there. There may be a traitor in their midst? Cassidy doesn't know where her father is. She fears for her life constantly. Her love Chris teaches her shooting skills. The battle for the survival of the people and the country is on.
Very well written, Cassy is not so naive and makes better choices now.

This has been an intense read from the beginning but the plot is thickening and I am totally anxiety ridden on what will happen next. The characters are growing closer but I still have no idea what is going on. I mean they say they are together but they act like they are not. What the hell? Will they or Won't they? I don't know...

Overall the suspense is killing me and everything is going down stay tuned to find out more....

2,5 stars.

Huft disappointing.

Short review:
The writing: Funny (but not so much), good enough. (3,5 stars)

The character: Seems distant…hey I don't know. I felt something was missing, so different. (2,5 stars - 3 stars)

The story and plot: I don't like it, sorry.
The story was changed. It was like, military mode.
Fast paced and I lost it. I mean the rhythm. Also still no answer, about my questions. Why the EMP? What is the Omega about? There. (2,5 stars)

In my review of State of Emergency I said it was a fantastic book worth five stars. Well my opinion hasn't changed with the sequel State of Chaos. The length of this allowed me to get through it in just a couple hours. State of Chaos has Cassidy almost immediately finding herself in dangerous peril. And from there this book only gets better. The ending sets up for book three, which yes I'll read.
