Jacqueline Yvonne Meta van Maarsen was a Dutch author and bookbinder. She was best known for her friendship with diarist Anne Frank. Her Christian mother was able to remove the J (Jew) signs from the family's identity cards (van Maarsen's father was Jewish) during the Second World War, thereby helping the van Maarsens escape the Nazis.
Absolutely recommended for anyone interested in Anne Frank diary. This book faithfully describes the circumstances of the Jewish community in Amsterdam during the horrors of German occupation. Written in a language of a young girl/child this book gives a perfect idea what the feelings of Anne Frank and her young friends might be.
The author knew Anne Frank personally so she writes about facts most other books about Anne don´t mention.
A well written book about a family’s friendship with another family in Amsterdam prior to the war. One family just happened to be Anne Frank‘s parents. These girls really were friends. Their parents had a connection and Hannah and her sister remained close to Otto Frank after the war. Hannah and her sister were the only two survivors of their family, at the ages of 17 and four The book goes into their lives after the war in Israel. it was a really good story but totally heartbreaking.
Hannah and Anne become close childhood friends in Amsterdam, both having fled Germany with their families. As the Nazis gain power, Anne’s family goes into hiding, while Hannah’s family is eventually sent to Bergen-Belsen. A harrowing story of the German atrocities endured and the strength of the Jewish community. Never forget.
Wonderful book! Last year I visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. I was able to picture the locality. And the stories of trying to avoid the Nazi's and then being deported to concentration camps is horrific, but one of the most personal accounts I've ever read.
A book that is a nice addition to the diary itself. For me it is also the first book I read 'about Anne', told by someone who knew her well. I liked the book, it described the thoughts of the girl Jopie as well as the reservations of the adult.
