So that is what phonics is. I understood in a rather vague way that phonics involved learning sounds. Since I was never taught this way the only thing I knew is that it was a desirable way to learn to read. Now I understand the reason behind all the word families and rules that my children have learned in school. Also makes me think I need some remedial phonics work myself.
