An excellent example of how the post-WWII mystery novel moved purposefully into suspense territory.
A chance encounter in a New York bar sets a man off on a quest to discover what really happened to his brother, who was executed after trying to escape from a Japanese POW camp. Was it the result of a betrayal rather than just the bad break he'd previously assumed it to be? And if it was betrayal, then which person from their past was responsible?
The dreadful progression from suspicion and fear through to certainty is tautly achieved by Curtiss and her crisp writing style is very readable.
