Face the past or look to the future? Both will hurt. One could kill her.
All her life, Lily Crane has supressed her childhood memories, masking the signs of abuse with a variety of looks. From brunette to blonde, tall to short — as a Mimic, changing shape is her gift. Her right. Her achilles heel.
It’s Lily’s latest likeness, chosen simply by accident, which threatens to repeat a history she’s desperate to forget. Worse, she must do so without the one man who takes all her pain away: Cael Aldridge.
Cael has no intention of leaving Lily on her own. He never has. Now, with the woman he loves in the hands of a predator who wants Lily for her genetics, Cael will do everything he can to bring her home.
Aimee is a romantic at heart and a southern transplant with a bit of the accent (but not a whole bunch). She's married to her high school sweetheart, and with him, she's produced three native North Carolinians, two of whom share the same DNA.
With an MBA and a degree in Applied Mathematics, there’s absolutely no reason she should be writing romance novels. Then again, she shouldn't need a calculator to add two numbers, either ... but she does.
I'm so jazzed! We are a part of the Surrender Blog Tour!! And there's a giveaway!!!! I'm a full blown fan of Aimee Laine's now. Seriously! I love this series and I loved Hide and Seek (Games of Zeus #1), gonna have to read that as soon as I get an opening on "The Calendar". Ready? Here we go!
In Little White Lies we get a peek of what is going on between Lily and Cael. In Surrender we get their story. Lily has a horrific past, through no fault of her own. She will find out that all she thinks she knows may not be the truth after all.
She believes her mother sold her to the government as a test subject. She was prodded, poked, used, and abused at their hands and deals with it the only way she is able. She stuffs it away and thinks of it as little as possible. However, she's about to have her beliefs questioned, learn some new things about herself, and have her world tipped upside down.
Right away things start off with a bang. Lily is kidnapped in the first couple of chapters in the book. Some how she managed to make herself resemble her younger sister that she was unaware she had. Her sister Angela, and her sister's daughter Leigh, have been missing. The Angela's husband sends out a PI and bountyhunter types to return her home. So mistakenly, Lily is grabbed in her sister's place. While there Cael comes to rescue her and she comes face to face with her mom. Angela turns up at Lily's house looking for her to help her retrieve her from the US government.
There is never a dull moment in this book. Just like Little White Lies, it doesn't let you go until the very end. I'm not giving you any more info. I might inadvertently give something away and half of the fun is trying to figure out what's coming next and where it will lead. I think Aimee Laine is a very talented author and look forward to the next book in the series. Which I will assume (yes, I know what they say about assuming.) that the next book will be about James and Maggie. That should be interesting, since Maggie seems like she's a player in her own league. I would strongly suggest you get your butts out there and get both of these books and join me, in sitting on my hands, waiting for for James and Maggie's story.
Loved Surrender. From the opening chapter that throws straight into action from Cael’s POV, to learning more about Lily’s past, to watching the suppressed romance blossom, to watching the character(s) grow, to the intrigue & suspense, and the settings & scenes-painted & world building … I loved it. Man, this is one heartstring-tugging story of self-discovery. Lily has always been the weaker of the Mimics of Rune clan—she certainly seemed that way in Little White Lies—but in Surrender she is forced into learning a self-history she didn’t know, whilst being dragged through memories she’d rather to forget. And it’s sad. Even what she puts herself through in a determination to prove she’s stronger than everyone thinks is sad. The sacrifices she makes are sad. :( Then we have Cael, whose instinct has always been to protect Lily. For the most part, she usually lets him. And having to take a step back to give Lily breathing space to prove herself is not an easy task for him to accomplish. Dude, I fell in love with this guy. With his protectiveness, as well as his inner strength and his respect for Lily that drives him to let her walk her own path. Then there was his pain, which came through almost as tangible to me as Lily’s did. He definitely steals the show whenever he’s on stage. All other blokes in the story pretty much faded into the background—coz, dayum, did Cael have my attention. And not in the macho ‘I am man, hear me roar’ kind of way. It was more in a quiet kind of way, an inner turmoil kind of way—with a subtlety made all the more effective because it was pretty damned obvious Cael ain’t exactly a pune. I don’t want to say too much without giving it all away. But these shapeshifting marvels give the reader a show that is a whole lot more impressive, and way more serious, than the reader was entertained with in Little White Lies. In fact, as soon as I have an opening slot, I imagine I’ll be reading this one again and with the way this one ended? I cannot wait for the third instalment to arrive.
Surrender is the second book in the Mimics of Rune series, even though I haven’t read Little White Lies; I was able to fall along Surrender very easily. Aimee Laine is a fantastic author with very good writing skills in my opinion. The character and plot were well written and I followed along without any problem.
The story if full of action, romance and suspense, I enjoyed the story very much, I really liked that it was a different kind of shifter story. I mean who wouldn’t want to change their hair color whenever they wanted.
Right at the beginning of the story we meet Lily and Cael, Lily has just been kidnapped and Cael is trying to find out who has her. Cael is in love with Lily and is will do anything to save her. We also meet Charley and Wyatt who are from the first book. And of course some new characters are introduced. Lily is a mimic and can change her appearance; different from other shifters they can change their hair, eye color and their general appearance. Lily, Cael, Charley, Wyatt are all very close and have love each other like family and will do anything in their power to get Lily back.
I really loved the story of Cael and Lily it’s a fantastic romance story and keeps you pulling for them to have the happy ever after. But of course the mystery to why Lily is kidnapped is something you are going to have to find out for yourself by reading Surrender. There is mystery, suspense, action and romance what more could you ask for in a book.
I have rated Surrender 4 stars and cannot wait for the next book in this series. I will defiantly be adding Aimee Laine as one of my favorite authors and see what else she has out there to read.
I've loved Lily and Cael ever since I met them in Little White Lies, and I was extremely excited when I first heard that they were getting their own story in Surrender. I was even more excited to see what would happen with their relationship after they had both spent about 40 years thinking their love was unrequited. Now that I've read Surrender, I have to say that I was not disappointed...in fact, I was wowed! :D
I also have to say that this is one sequel that does not disappoint! Little White Lies was action-packed, and steamy...and Surrender definitely filled its own action and steam quota (although I don't think I could've ever gotten enough of Cael ;) haha). One of the things that I really enjoyed about Surrender was the fact that we get to learn more about mimics...and we even learn some things that the mimics in Rune didn't know themselves, which definitely fascinated me. :) I love how vast and flushed out the descriptions of mimics are and how defined they are a type of supernatural species. Aimee Laine has done an amazing job making her mimics stand out, and she's done a fantastic job with letting her readers learn about them. In fact, they fascinate me so much...I would jump at the chance to read a guide about them, or just anything that would give me more information about them...it would be awesome! :D
Along with the fact that I love all the details about mimics...I especially loved the characters. :D I connected with the characters back in Little White Lies, but it's even better getting to see more of them. I loved seeing Charley and Wyatt again, and more of James and Maggie (who I'm hoping will be the focus of the next Mimics of Rune book...and I think I may be right because those two were getting close during parts of Surrender ;P)....and most of all, I loved getting to know Lily and Cael better! I loved getting to see their POVs and learning about their past. I feel like I understand Lily so much better now, and I have so much compassion towards her. She has also completely wowed me with her strength. Cael is as sexy as ever, and he also impressed me...he can be so sweet and sensitive. Plus, he's also extremely talented as a mimic! :D I love getting to see him do things that barely any other mimics can do...it's pretty neat! :D
Now, I've mentioned Lily and Cael separately, but I also want to talk a bit about them as a couple, and as friends. :) Lily and Cael are first and foremost, great friends. I think that fact is one of the things that makes them so strong as a couple, and it also makes the reader root for them pretty hard. I love how Cael is always there for Lily, and how even though she considers herself weak, she's there for him to. They comfort each other, and have an amazing connection. I just absolutely love them together, and after seeing them through Charley and Wyatt in Little White Lies, I was extremely excited to see what happened between them in Surrender...and I was definitely ecstatic with how it all turned out. ;D
The plot of Surrender actually was teased about a bit in Aimee Laine's short story, "Misguided", that was within the Into the Unknown anthology. You don't need to read it to know what's going on in Surrender, but it was a nice bit of back-story that really helped connect the reader to where this book begins. It also kind of feels like you're in the loop if you've read "Misguided", which is pretty awesome. I loved the short story, and I loved all of Surrender! I got tonnes of new info on mimics, and I was constantly thrown for a loop and surprised...which I love! Surrender wasn't predictable at all, and it was extremely exciting! You also meet a bunch of new characters that I'm looking forward to seeing in future books! Plus, you get an amazing romance through Lily and Cael! :D
Overall, I loved Surrender and thought it was amazing! I would recommend it, and the Mimics of Rune series, to paranormal and supernatural fans who are looking for something new. This series is incredibly unique, and it's also flushed out with wonderful characters, fantastic plots, and writing that will surprise you and keep you caught up in the story until you read the very last word. :D
Cael Aldridge is seen running through traffic. He’s chasing a man named Roy Marlow. Roy is a man that has a connection to Lily. And Cael has loved Lily for a very long time. But why is he chasing Roy in the first place?
Lily Crane is a shapeshifter – a mimic. As you read this story, Aimee will let you know what a mimic can do. There’s also someone who wants Lily, but for what purpose. Why her of all people? Her life has changed and she’s learning things she never knew.
Tony is the husband of Angela and they have both a daughter, Leigh, and a son named Max. They have been added to Lily’s mystery. I love how Aimee makes this story about family. There is the love story of Lily and Cael but there’s also the love of a family. There are many types of families. There is our genetic family, your work family, and the family you create when you take a partner.
I love that Aimee doesn’t put in a lot of sex in this story. The story revolves around the mystery of Lily and her being a mimic. Aimee gives us some sex when it comes to the love between Cael and Lily but otherwise she keeps our attention in trying to solve the mystery. We have to turn the page because we want answers to our “why’s”.
If you have followed Aimee’s work you will know that there is another book related to the mimics. At the end of the book, we get a teaser to Little White Lies (published July 01, 2011). If you have not read this book, I would recommend that you read it. I look forward to see what Aimee has in store for her readers next.
Aimee Laine delivers a fab follow-up in her Mimics of Rune series with Surrender, the sequel to Little White Lies! If all the mimics in Rune, NC were dogs or cats, Lily Crane would be the runt of the bunch with diminished power and a seemingly meek, albeit upbeat, demeanor. She’s got a spotty past that she guards fiercely, not wanting anyone to know or judge her for it. She’s also young for a mimic – only 61 years old – and she often feels as if she doesn’t know enough about who she is inside, nor this special gift she has, because she was never taught. Little does she know just how very special she is… The plot of Surrender is fast-paced. If you read Little White Lies and Surrender back-to-back, you are delivered a one-two punch that really can leave you reeling, especially when you consider how closely the books tie into each other. In Little White Lies, we followed Charley Randall as a secret FBI operative who uses her photographic memory – and shape-shifting abilities – to help solve cases. In Surrender, we continue with the backstory, following, instead, Lily, who is kidnapped while out on the seemingly benign streets of Rune for her genetics, simply because of her chosen likeness that day. And while she’s been taken away, her best friend – and an interest she’s always denied – Cael, is desperate to get her back. Laine continues to write her characters with a great deal of depth, investing the reader wholeheartedly in their story. Lily, in particular, thinks of herself as very fragile, but I think beneath that assumed fragility exists a very strong woman that needs to find her own strength through knowledge and independence. What’s ultimately the greatest thing about her is her need to show that she isn’t weak, that she doesn’t want to be weak. Everyone just expects that of her and she has this sort of desperation to shed that skin and come into her own, no matter the cost to her. Which also shows how altruistic Lily is. Sometimes to her own detriment… They say that opposites attract and Cael is no exception. Strong to Lily’s weak, he’s her protector and her warrior, but sometimes you have to let the people you love fight their own battles. Demanding and loving, Cael was a great character to get to know better and I am so glad Laine wrote about him more. The two of them together…well, I’ll let you read about it! But I think the best relationships are built on a strong foundation of friendship. The rest of the characters continue to be fascinating…especially as even more were introduced in Surrender and the plot thickened! The history and science behind the mimics was absolutely fascinating and never failed to keep my nose in the book. All in all, this was a great follow-up to the first in the series and I eagerly await the next. And Aimee…can we get more on Maggie and James? PRETTY PLEASE???
*This book was provided to me by the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
Now this was an interesting book! I've never really read about Mimics or humans with the ability to shift their appearance (hair color, height, etc) and I found it all fascinating. Especially when characters would change their sex. Now that was interesting! It so messed with my head but I loved it. I found it very refreshing to read a paranormal romance that didn't focus on your typical para-beings but went somewhere new and unique. And did so incredibly well. With a perfectly meshed story of romance and suspense and characters that touched my heart Surrender kept me on my toes from page one and left me eagerly awaiting more from Aimee Laine.
Laine created wonderful characters in Cael and Lily. I adored Cael from the very start. He's such a sweet man, solid and always there for people but in no way a push over. And oh will he melt you on the spot with how madly in love he is with Lily, who he's secretly loved for decades. Ach. I loved how much these two cared and worried over each other. There was an amazing honesty and tenderness to their bond that really touched my heart and made me so damn envious. Lily was a lovely heroine as well even if she was a bit of a giggler. [apparently I have a thing about women who giggle] Lily's working hard to overcome her insecurities and be brave as she faces not only her past and the fact that everything she's always believed may be far from the truth but dangers from a group intent on using her for her unique genetic as well.
The mystery and suspense of the story was just as enjoyable as the romance. I loved trying to figure out what was going on as Lily's chosen appearance leads to a case of a mistaken identity and kidnapping. It was amazing to watch everything line up at exactly the right moment in time to bring her past crashing into her present. There were nice adrenalin rushes and some crazy moments along the way as Lily and her friends fight to to keep her safe and end up uncovering answers that affect them all. It's a fantastic ride that apart from a couple awkward conversation transitions is very well written.
Surrender moves along at a very nice pace with interesting plot twists and revelations that will keep you reading way past your bedtime and will have you pulling for Lily and Cael. There were some storylines left up in the air so I've got my fingers crossed that means we'll get a couple more books out of the series. I'd love to spend more time with all of the different characters and learn more about them. Here's hoping! If you enjoy rock solid romances and intriguing suspense with a touch of paranormal you should definitely check this series out.
I really liked the premise of this book...I had to back and read the first book but this I could have read as a stand alone...
Exciting is only the first word to describe Surrender. With a unique setting and cast of extraordinary characters, Aimee Laine weaves a paranormal tale to capture the attention of many. This book surrounds lies, secret government facilities and programs, and surprisingly a a steamy love...
As a Mimic, Lily has the ability to alter her appearance at will, except for one period of time, every year, wherein her body is forced to its original form. Lily's stress builds as her shared birthday with her love Cael looms closer and her memories of childhood torment and pain threaten to surface during a unexpected mission.
Surrender moves quickly and you are drawn in for a fantastic read. Lily doesn't know much about mimic abilities or her potential yet, but she proves to her loyal team, Cael, James, Charley, and Wyatt, that she's stronger in mind than her past allows her to be.
Laine continues to write her characters with a great deal of depth, investing the reader wholeheartedly in their story. Lily, in particular, thinks of herself as very fragile, but I think she is so strong and is going to reach her potential with the help of her best friend Cael. What’s ultimately the greatest thing about her is her need to show that she isn’t weak, that she doesn’t want to be weak. Everyone just expects that of her and she has this sort of desperation to shed that skin and come into her own, no matter the cost to her.
Cael is so protective of Lily. He’s her protector and her warrior, Demanding and loving, Cael was a great character to get to know better from the first book. The two of them together…is a true romance...But I think the best relationships are built of friendship first...that is what is so special of Lily and Cael.
The rest of the characters continue to be fascinatin....The history and science behind the mimics was absolutely fascinating and never failed to keep my nose in the book. Eh hmmmm 2am(:
Highly recommend this book and cannot wait to read more in this series! Thank you R2R for this book to review!
In Surrender we meet Lily and Cael. Lily is a mimic just like Charley and she and Cael have become very close and Cael loves Lily and will do anything for her. So when she is kidnapped Cael will do whatever it takes to get her back.
Lily will have to come face to face with her past and relive a life she has tried to hide for so long. The pain of her abuse is to much to bare and she does not want to re-live the past but it is the only way to move on and have a life with the one man who has always loved her and that is Cael. How can you go back to a past that is filled with pain and abuse? How can you let go of the hate for the one person who has caused so much pain? Can love erase all that pain? These are the things that Lily will have to face and answer.
Cael has always loved Lily and he always will. He will do whatever it takes to bring her home. At times he has to let Lily do things for herself and when these times hit he gets nervous because his instincts are screaming at him to scoop in and save her.As Cael realizes the only way for Lily to heal is to do what she needs to and give her space he does. What Cael gets in return is something he never thought he would. This is a must read series and lord have mercy I need me a Cael in my life!
I gave Little White Lies (Mimics of Rune #1) 5 stars, but this one I must admit captured me more. If 5.5 stars were available, that's what Surrender would receive. Perhaps I ought to change my star rating system.
Anyhoo...
Lily's story is emotionally moving. She's forced to face her haunting past and finds unexpected, but welcomed surprises along the way.
Yummies: Cael. Faithful, rock solid changeling who would do anything for Lily. I could go on & on, but what woman wouldn't want a man as focused on her as he is on Lily? She's one lucky woman.
Lily herself is a troubled chracter whose story reaches out to entangle the reader in her woes. She gained my empathy & I couldn't wait for her story to come a-right. I didn't want it to end - I just wanted that HEA she definitely deserved!
Yuckies: Ray *SPOILER ALERT* the villain came across as a slimy, sneaky, shiver inducing chunk of puke. However, he too was portrayed in such a way that I can't even call his character yucky. Just the changeling himself.
Recommend: If you enjoyed LWL, you'll love this 2nd installment. If you haven't read LWL, do so!
I really enjoyed this! Cael is everything I like in a romance hero, sweet but not sappy, strong, but soft underneath when it comes to Lily, and so gentle despite his size and strength. Love him to bits.
Lily is portrayed so well as she grew throughout the story, going from meek and damaged to finding the strength to face her past. The characterizations are spot on and often tugged on my heart strings.
This is a powerful and engaging love story that will have you rooting for these characters to overcome the mountains of obstacles they're faced with.
This is sort of a complicated novel to try to review. It feels like two stories gathered into one. I definitely enjoyed the second half more than the first. Let me explain…
Aimee Laine has a sharp writing style. She is crisp, concise, and not overbearing on her settings. I prefer a novel that moves, and for the most part, Surrender does keep flowing.
The last 40% or so of the novel flew by. Great plot, great pace, and lots of heart pumping excitement. I really enjoyed it and had trouble putting it down.
But I do have a few bones to pick about “Surrender”.
Too many characters: There were just too many characters in Surrender. Half the time I was lost and had no idea who was who. Now, in saying this, there was a “book one” that I did not read. This may be part of my confusion. But my mind wanted to focus on Lily. But Cael was always involved with long conversations with other people that just seemed to go on forever (from my perspective) because I wanted to get back to Lily.
Aimee Laine did her job, in that I cared about Lily… but I just didn’t care about all the rest of them… even if they were trying to save Lily.
It felt like two short novels pasted together to make a longer novel:
At about 40% in to the novel, I was dreading writing this review. For the reasons above, I was really not liking the novel. It felt like it was winding down, and it pretty much did, with one loose end. But there was still 60% of the novel to go.
All of the sudden, when the characters grabbed onto that little loose end, my interest became peaked. Suddenly, I was drawn in. I cared.
I stayed up late reading. I hid from my kids trying to get a few extra pages in. We had company, and I was bored, so I scooted upstairs and got a chapter in and slipped back before anyone wondered about me. I was interested. I was hooked. It came together.
I did have a slight cringe when three or so new characters were introduced into the ensemble, but the pacing kept me going. Right up until the very last page you find yourself on a roller-coaster ride of awesomeness.
When I finished, I closed my reader and said “Wow, that was good.”
But here lies my quandary… I feel like I have read one three-star “okay” book, and one four star “really great” book. So how the heck do you tie that all together?
I’m just not sure. I wish that the author had found a way get past the first half of the book faster. There just seemed to be too much fat there, when all the beefy good stuff was at the end.
Would I recommend Surrender? Yeah, I think so. Especially if you have already read Little White Lies. The beginning might make more sense if you have read the first novel in the series.
But if you find you are not fond of the beginning, don’t hate me… just get to about the 40% point and enjoy the rest of the ride. The second half of the novel really moves, and it is an enjoyable, tense read right up until the last few pages.
Surrender by Aimee Laine (Goodreads Author) Synopsis from Goodreads
"Face the past or look to the future? Both will hurt. One could kill her. All her life, Lily Crane has suppressed her childhood memories, masking the signs of abuse with a variety of looks. Alive. He can only pray he isn’t too late."
The world of the Mimics is definitely a new and interesting place for me. I started reading the story and felt a bit lost, not really understanding this world, when the light bulb came on and I realized this was book two. I went in search of book one, Little White Lies, and realized I had won it in a giveaway awhile ago and had forgotten it was in my to-read cue. I immediately put down Surrender and read Little White Lies and after finishing book one returned to Surrender. This was an awesome decision on my part, as all of the feelings of being lost and wondering what was going on were no longer an issue and Surrender was now a very enjoyable read. I came to love Lily. Even though she was not my usual kick hinny heroin and at times appears weak, which can often annoy me in a character, don't be fooled this lady has a backbone of iron. The situation she is placed in is horrifying and she faces it head on despite her fear and actually takes a stand to get the job done. I am definitely looking forward to more from this author and this world and anxious to read the next installment. I would definitely recommend this book to folks interested in the paranormal world. It is a fresh new idea that is quite intriguing and enjoyable to read. I do have to add the caveat that the whole premise of this world is much better understood and a much better read having read book one first and I do not see this as a standalone. So pick up book one and then dive right into Surrender. I requested this book from the author to read and review and it was provided to me with a request for my honest opinion without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Suspense/Thriller, Urban Fantasy Publisher Type: Independent
My Review: True to form, Aimee Laine has written yet another amazingly romantic and suspenseful book! Her novels are the best of both worlds, taking us on a stunning romantic journey all the while shocking us with must-hold-your-breath suspense!!! This is just crazy, my friends, these books are just that good!!!
In Surrender we continue getting to know the entire gang we first met in book 1, Little White Lies, but the focus is squarely on Lilly and Cael. Lilly is a unique character; she's vulnerable and gentle and more than a bit unsure of herself. Throughout the book we get to understand the reasons behind her insecurities and, even though she's not your typical kick-butt heroine, you can't help but absolutely adore her. She is strong in a quiet, subtle way and has admirable courage. Cael is this steady (and smoldering) rock. He's obviously very much in love with Lilly (we saw that in book 1) and it takes some time to understand why he's been "just a friend" for so long. Cael .... I'm struggling for words here .... is just so absolutely what you want from your guy. He's Lilly's champion: fighting for her, going crazy with worry and anger that someone would hurt her. He's her best friend: supportive and encouraging. He deeply loves her: accepting of even her darkest secret. And --again-- wow, Ms. Laine, how do you manage to verbalize love so well?!?
Now if all this stunningly-well-written romance wasn't enough for you, then there's the suspense/thriller part of story. Yikes! The book barely begins and someone's grabbed Lilly! Craziness is afoot and the plot twists and turns like the Amazon River. There's conspiracy and questionable intentions. You just don't know who Lilly can trust! I do want to note that though there's Lilly's abusive past and a missing teen girl as central components to this story, it never gets too dark for those of us who don't do truly dark and scary stuff.
The ending is so, so, sooooo good! There's so many good things there and then there's some cliff hanging that makes you hungry for book 3. It's pretty clear who book 3 will be about, but I'll leave you in suspense. **wink, wink**
Cover Art: This isn't your typical, "oh so pretty" cover. Nonetheless, how could you not be intrigued and pick this book right up?!?
Cael Aldridge follows and finally catches up to the elusive Roy Marlow who has been following Cael’s love-interest, Lilly, for some, as Cael believes, nefarious intent.
Lilly Crane’s birthday is coming up soon. She will change and whether she changes again is up to her, her DNA. Her best friend, Charley is getting married and everything is coming together well until someone grabs her and drugs her, dragging her cross-country and installing her as someone’s wife and mother. But why?
Surrender is the second in Aimee Laine’s Mimics of Rune series (the first was Little White Lies). I didn’t read the first one but jumped right into the second and loved it. There was only a little confusion as I got to know the characters but the author doesn’t leave much out of the second book, you can pick it up and read it without feeling like you missed something important.
Her Mimics are not only interesting but unusual in the paranormal fiction area. They can change to look like anyone, or anything, with differing abilities per person. And they don’t live forever, there are limits to things and not everyone is always drop-dead gorgeous all the time.
And there are enemies, people who want to know what the Mimics are and how they do things. And they are not beyond doing great harm to do it. Lilly is a damaged woman, she’s been through a lot as a youngster and she has self-esteem issues as well as fears that come out of her past. And she wants to trust, especially Cael, but even that trust is hard for her.
Surrender is a beautifully written, well edited, tight and exciting read. I completely fell into the story and went through all of the trials with Lilly and her friends. I cannot wait to go back and read Little White Lies and then catch the next Mimics of Rune installment.
As a Mimic, albeit a weak one, Lily Crane can look however she wants. Unfortunately the ability has some disadvantages, as Lily discovers when her current face causes a case of mistaken identity which will force her to face the past she has tried so hard to forget.
Cael Alderidge would go to the ends of the earth to keep Lily safe, and with a Dangerous Mimic wanting her for unknown reasons; Cael must be willing to do anything to keep the woman he loves safe.
This book throws you straight into the action from the very first page and you will be hooked until the very last. Aimee Laine definitely has the recipe for a very good paranormal romance; surrender has a perfect balance of action, romance, intrigue and mystery.
The characters have an incredible amount of depth to them, especially Lily. As a mimic her powers are very weak but she has an inner strength and determination that is remarkable considering her tortured past. Cael is the perfect love interest: smart, strong, sexy and protective of Lily without being too possessive. The secondary characters are just as amazing, my favourite was Maggie and I am hoping we will get to see a lot more of her in a future book.
The twists and turns in the plot kept me guessing throughout and there were points in the book where I could barely stand the suspense of wanting to know what Roy was up to. I loved the romance between Lily and Cael though I did keep wondering why they weren’t already together after knowing each other for so long and clearly being perfect each other. However I suppose that’s life, not knowing what you have until it is torn away from you.
Overall an incredible book and I can’t wait for the third in the Mimics of Rune series.
Surrender is unique, exciting, full of action, love and loyalty. I love that Aimee Laine threw us right into the action right from the start. The action keeps going from beginning to end.
Surrender has really great characters that really helped push this story along.
As a mimic, Lily Crane was shown as weak and damaged. Within the book we see how Lily is saved form any problems she has. Unfortunately the way Lily looks causes a case of mistaken identity; thus the story begins. Throughout this novel we get to see Lily grow and become a strong woman who can make her own decisions in her life.
Cael Aldridge, her best friend, was secretly in love with lily Crane.
I really loved how the relationship between Lily and Cael developed. It was nice to get to see everything right from the beginning. This is a great love story that will keep you engaged from the start.
Aimee Laine did a wonderful job on her sequel to Little White Lies. Surrender (Mimics of Rune, #2) I would definitely recommend.

Cael is a mimic and he can change in woman is he want in a minute.Cael has loves Lily for forty years, always there for her but now he wants to blend with Lily to be his husband and his everything. I like Cael because he is loyal loving and very protective with the women he loves. For Cael ,Lily means his life.Cael just wants Lily to be safe and happy with him :) Thanks to J.Taylot Publishing for this arc and the R2R
I was only able to read this book a little bit at a time and I looked forward to every chapter. The relationships between the Mimics of Rune are more complicated than I imagined and I enjoyed learning more about Lily and Cael. This story was thrilling and the action and suspense made it hard to put the book down. The plot and setting got increasingly complicated. But, the author made it easy for me to learn about the characters' pasts, follow current events in the story, and keep up with disguises and identities. After getting a glimpse into the histories of several other characters, I'm now wondering about their pasts and I'm eagerly looking forward to learning more about the Mimics of Rune.
This sequel to "Little White Lies" was ok. Not earth-shattering, but ok. Honestly, the first book was better.
Lily appeared in the first book as well, and was a little more entertaining and engaging than in her own book. Unfortunately, she comes across as insecure about her own mimicking abilities, which is understandable, coming from her tortured past. But she never grew a backbone until towards the end of the book, and even then, why she decided to grow a spine at THAT particular time, especially after everything she went through, just astounds me.
And poor Cael...(smh)...I just wonder how could he fall for someone so frail. Lily's like a hothouse flower; if you put it in any type of stressful environment, the flower appears to just wilt away. Unfortunately, Lily's no different. It takes the entire group from the first book (James, Charley, Wyatt, Cael, and Maggie) to get Lily out of the situation she's in, but they finally do it.
The premise of the book was pretty interesting, and you learn more about mimics and their genetic makeup and what happens after their 234th year (yes, they live that long). That information kept me reading until the last page.
Overall, the book was decent. Again, I do wish Lily was stronger, but again, with her past, I could see why she was so "weak," for lack of a better word. But what happened to her in the past should have made her much stronger than she was, and make her determined to NEVER have it happen to her again, instead of going through anything similar like she did in the book.
Lily has been free from her captors for 40 years. She has been friends with Cael, Charley, Maggie, James and Wyatt. I didn't read the first book but understood the story.
I didn't love this book. I thought it was okay and liked the twist on shape shifting. The ones in this group shape shift (or Mimic) humans mostly though some can shift into animals. Their talents reach several different ranges from shifting into almost anything to barely being able to change their hair.
This is Lily's book and I like Lily. I like seeing people that have been almost destroyed emotionally and physically fight their way back to be strong. In the first book Lily was used for experiments and this book she has to fight that past again. She learns more about herself and her talents. She also tries to figure out what to do with Cael.
Here is the part that I can't believe I'm going to say. I didn't connect with Cael at all. He was just blah to me. I didn't feel any passion with them even though they say it's been brewing for 40years. I found myself wanting to get on with trying to solve this mystery of why Roy is so fascinated with Lily. I loved the other character though even the kids. I want to know what happens with Maggie and James and the children. That seemed more interesting than Cael. I get that he has been overprotective and they wanted him to give Lily room but he almost step out of the entire book giving her space.
I'm still not quite sure what happened with the blending in the end, but I don't see why Cael couldn't blend with Lily, eventually he will have to blend or outlive her.
