In an attempt to save a dying space program, NASA holds a public lottery. Four winners of the lottery would get the once in a lifetime chance of traveling into space. All goes well but the winners get more than just the dream of a lifetime.A bizarre occurrence upon re-entry changes their trajectory and when they land, earth is no longer the same place they had seen four days earlier. Those from the space expedition find themselves on a planet that is dangerous, dry and void of all life. They follow a signal of hope and trek across a treacherous United States in attempts to not only find their families but answers to what has happened to the human race.It is a story of survival and the fight for mankind.Although it is a ‘stand alone’ book, NOVA is a sequel meets prequel to, A Path to Utopia. Both are novels in, The Last Mile, series.
The book focuses on an entirely different set of characters, and I didn't mind at all. It isn't unusual for Druga to show a disaster from a different character's perspective. In this case, the characters provided an invaluable one.
These characters -- regular people who won a lottery to travel in space --were unaware of what was happening on Earth at the time. They lost contact with Earth some time before, which was concerning, but they were woefully unprepared with what they would find when they force their ship to land.
Earth looks very different. More time has passed than they realized, and there is no one around to explain to them what happened. The space travelers search for surviving family members while contending with their past problems that are now far behind them.
I love the camaraderie between these very different characters and how they worked out their understandings of each other.
I spent the first 65% of the book checking to see if I was really reading book 2 of "The Last Mile" as it seemed to be a completely different story. Even so, it was quite interesting to read and then it converges with the characters and story line of the first book. I enjoyed this but really needs a good editor.
A very well written book. I was glued to it from the beginning. A star studded cast. From the beginning I didn't see the tie-in to the first book. But near the middle it very casually brought the first book characters and tied it all together. Really enjoyed reading. I recommend reading this to all that love Ms Druga, what a brilliant writer.
It’s funny, has enduring characters and totally unbelievable. I did however have a good time reading it. I think anyone that likes a good space opera would like this book. It’s also good for younger people
First of all love all of the references to old SYFY movies. Book was absolutely a fun read. It kept you remembering which movie or book did that come from. The storyline was completely Druga. Out there, funny LOVED it!
This book took me a little bit longer to get into, but stuck with it. I Actually thought that it may of been a separate story from the first but then it all came together.
Spoilers- I was bummed when I started this book at the characters from the original book were not there. Imagine how pumped I was when I found out who was at SC. Can’t wait to read the last one!
Thoroughly enjoying this series so far my only complaint is the appalling editing. Hopefully the final book will be better. Love Jacqueline Druga's stories.
I thought this book was so much better than the first book. Definitely glad I continued reading the series. Now onto the 3rd book, lets see if it's just as good as this one.
DNF 36%....I loved Utopia, but the characters in this book literally gave me a headache. Kip? Nope. Not buying it. His ass would have been kicked out of the program in a heartbeat. Plus, there were far too many characters, and little to no definition to each, so telling them apart was difficult. As I said, loved Utopia, so I'll just leave it at that. No need to for me to continue on with this series.
Although I don't usually read books with aliens, I read this one because I read the first in the series. I loved this book even more than the first one!
