First Century Diaries #3

The Timothy Diary

Rate this book
The Timothy Diary is the story of Paul's third journey as told from Timothy's unique first-century perspective. As the apostle Paul strives to establish churches throughout the Gentile world, his troubles with the Jewish world increase. In this book he resolves to train a select group of young men (an idea modeled after Christ and his disciples) to continue his work after him. Paul's vision for the church will come alive, particularly with the writing of the epistle to the Corinthian church.

I'm progressing through Gene Edwards' First-Century Diaries series, and just finished "The Timothy Diary" which looks at Paul's third missionary journey to Ephesus. I really enjoyed this, because it made me see how he used this time in his life, as he was getting older, to purposefully pour into the lives of several young men, that they would be able to continue the work of spreading the gospel of Christ after his own departure.

Along with other great historical insights Edwards' gives to the Scriptural narrative, this "diary" in particular was a good reminder of the struggles Paul faced in seeing churches birthed, grow and mature, even as he moved on to new areas. It was not always a pretty picture, and it's helpful to remind us that church life can be messy at times.

An enjoyable read.

I have had a series of books by Gene Edwards for some time and as I am on holiday chose to plunge into reading one of them. I was not disappointed.....it was a good read and as a story about Timothy’s journey it was very factual and informative. I did get bogged down a few times and found myself reading but not taking in parts of the story but overall I followed it well. It helped me to understand the people involved with the Apostle Paul and if their personalities and more of the culture of that period. It gave me a hunger to read more of the diary type books by this author that I have......so I will be picking up another of his books soon.

Mr. Edwards did a lot of research on life in that time period and "fleshed out" what readers are given in the New Testament. The books are an easy read, fun, and lead to a greater understanding of the New Testament. I found the "first century diary" series of books fascinating.

This one was a little more tedious reading than the two before it in the series, but I'm still loving these "diaries." Three down, two to go. The New Testament feels so much more real to me now!

It gave me a better grasp of the idea that the books written by Paul in the New Testament were written to groups of people / sometimes individuals. This book gave character to the people referenced in his letters.
