In the coastal hideaway of Clare Point, Delaware—home for centuries to the Kahill vampire clan—a vampire sworn to protect the love that may cost him everything, will make the ultimate choice…

Voracious

After months spent eliminating some of the world’s most ruthless criminals, Aedan Brigid is on sabbatical in Clare Point. Instead of relief, he feels on edge. Part of it is due to Dallas York, the gorgeous blonde bar owner whose touch just sparked an intense, inexplicable connection. But there’s another reason too. A local woman has been brutally attacked, her face and body carved beyond recognition. And one glance tells Aedan whose grisly handiwork it is.

Centuries ago, Aedan lost his beloved to a depraved monster nicknamed Jay. Now Jay is back, more vicious than ever. Aedan is already breaking clan rules by getting involved with Dallas—even if her mysterious gift sets her apart from other humans. And soon, he’ll have to decide whether he’ll turn away from the only life he’s known to protect a love he thought he’d never feel again…

I found this series a few years ago when I was participating in a challenge that required you to read a book that took place in one of the 50 states. I love vampire romance and Delaware is a hard state to find so this being a 5 book series (so far) I figured I'd have Delaware locked up for a few years.

I've read all the books in sequence up to this one and loved them all. I love VKF's world-building. The fact that the vampires age as normal people but don't die is really cool and different. Well I guess that statement isn't exactly correct since they do in fact die, they just don't stay that way. The cool part is that they come back as 16 year old teenagers and do it all over again. The extra cool part is that they are mated and stay mated through each incarnation but the mates don't necessarily die at the same time so it's fun watching the adjustment between teenager and senior citizen.

In this particular installment Aedan Brigid is on hiatus from hunting serial killers in France so he returns to the "family" home in Clare Point, Delaware. Unfortunately an old serial rapist reappears and Aedan gets drawn in once again. But it's not all bad guys in Delaware. Aedan meets human bar owner Dallas York in Rehoboth Beach and falls hard. Unfortunately it is forbidden for vampires to date/mate with humans so he's treading thin ice with the council but that doesn't stop him especially since Dallas's autistic daughter, Kenzie is psychic and can communicate with Aedan forming a very strong bond.

A very romantic and hot story that kept me reading as fast as I could turn the pages. I surely hope there are more books to come as there are way more characters that need their HEA.

Best in the series

Voracious is Aedan’s tale but there is a secondary tale involving Peigi and Brian. Aedan has the gift of shape-shifting; he can morph into human bodies: male, female of any age as well as any animal. He is drawn to a human female who has the gift of sight. When she touches someone she sees their past. She has a daughter that is autistic who has the gift of sight. Aedan is a member of the kill team seeking to kill Jay, a serial rapist who mutilates his victims.

Although this book is the fifth in the series on the Clare Point vampires, it is a stand alone novel. However, it a better read if read in order.

PJV Quickie: Please take into account that this is book #5 in the series and I have not read the previous books, but intrigued by the cover and the fact that it appeared in my mailbox, by magic, I thought I would give it a try.

Review

Being my first trip to 'Clare Point' I didn't have a prior working knowledge of the characters and their unique vampireness, but I was instantly won over by Aedan Brigid and his clan of vampires. These vampires are very different from anything I've read before, they are cursed, made into vampires, to live over and over again and protect humans from supernatural threats. Aeden is a detective of sorts in the clan and his goal is to basically eradicate evil.

The concept of the world of Clare Point was very interesting and unique, but the overall play of the story was very complex. There were a lot of characters, which is very normal for a long standing series, but picking it up at five had me scratching my head at some points. The main focus was the vampire Aeden and the human bartender Dallas. Aedan, was supposed to be on a sabbatical, but when a woman is attacked, finds himself chasing a serial killer he has been searching the world for. Along with the hunt to find the attacker/killer, Aedan keeps getting drawn back to Dallas, even though he knows a vampire/human pairing is forbidden.

The oddest thing about the book was the concept of the vampire. Immortal yes, but only because they keep being reborn as teenagers. So, they achieve old age and then die and are spit forth as teenagers and have to slowly recover their memories. What was odd about the situation was the fact that if a paired couple is split earlier, one could be much older than the other. One in fact could be a very surly teenager, while the other is a matronly woman. It was very tragic and odd all in one.

The writing was well done and I think I might have done myself a disservice by starting at book five. The hole concept being intriguing, but the fact that I had no prior attachment to the characters was a bit of a drag. I wanted to get into their lives, but the whole introduction of the teenagers sat strange with me and there was more of that type of writing in the beginning instead of the introduction of the mystery and crime solving which I was more interested in. This focus on Clare Point and the other characters just led to a slow read that didn't pick up until I was almost ready to give up on the novel. But, overall I did enjoy it and the interaction between Dallas and Aeden was fun. I think I might have to go back and start form book one, to give this one a fair shot.
Recommendations:

Unlike me you should probably start at book one. Fans of mysteries and crime might enjoy this mixed with your paranormal romance. Vampire fans, should enjoy. This is an adult romantic novel, as you can tell from the cover.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Voracious is a book that is part of a series, while I read it completely on its own, I do think it would be better to read these in order. While I mostly enjoyed the story line and thought Aedan and Dallas were a well matched couple, I think I missed a lot of the continuing story arc because I didn’t read these in order.

Yes, Aedan was a well muscled, alpha male (which we all know I ADORE) but I think the shining aspect in this book was Dallas’s daughter who was autistic. She doesn’t talk much, preferring to remain mostly inside her own head. Her unique abilities are what ultimately lead to the conclusion of the book. I thought her autism was well wrote and it seemed as if the author may have a bit of knowledge on the subject. I loved how Aedan was able to break through to her where most people could not. They were able to communicate with each other without using the spoken voice and it added depth to a character that would have been hard to understand otherwise.

I also enjoyed Dallas because she was such a strong character. She thought a lot about what would be best for her daughter and was cautious when she really needed to be. Since she was basically on her own and surviving quite well with not much help. I love strong single mothers who want the love of a man but they don’t NEED it. Dallas opens up to Aedan when she realizes how much she is coming to care for him and how much her daughter seems to need him too, which was incredibly sweet.

The secondary characters were completely lost to me because of my lack of knowledge on the past books in the series and that’s completely my fault. However, where this book lost me was the completely anti-climatic ending. You can’t set out to write a paranormal with suspense and then totally skip the suspense. You just can’t. The book was really good, the looks into the psyche of the villain were excellent, the detail of the previous victims, perfection….then it comes time for Dallas to be attacked….NOTHING. Completely fade to black. What? NO! It was like suspense blue balls! When we next see Dallas she’s near death and Aedan is struggling with whether or not to turn her, ok I can get behind the emotions scene. Then….FADE TO BLACK AGAIN. I seriously was incredibly upset and disappointed. I thought, the only way this is going to redeem itself is if there is an awesome fight scene with the villain who we have yet to even see. Maybe he’ll turn out to be some super cool, bad ass hybrid that will give Aedan a run for his money! Turns out, nope, didn’t get that either. It was a 1 page fight and then boom…dead.

The ending was just completely out of character for the rest of the book. It was anti-climactic and abrupt. It didn’t go with the lead up at all and it left me shaking my head in disappointment. Maybe that’s how this author writes, I don’t know. But it wasn’t for me. The first 3/4 of the book were awesome but the last part seriously brought down the rating.

I give Voracious by V.K. Forrest 3 stars!

Sensuality: Hot
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Vampire
Audience: Adult

Aedan Brigid is a vampire investigator/assassin at home on sabbatical in Clare Point, New Jersey. Sparks fly when he touches bar owner Dallas York, and she sees images from his past. He easily falls for Dallas and her autistic daughter Kenzie, but he's breaking the rules by doing so. He's not allowed to get involved with a human female.

Trouble has followed Aedan home, however, in the form of a murderer who surfaces every 50 years. And who murdered Aedan's only other love in his 1500-year life. But can Aedan catch the murderer before he goes to ground again? Or before he kills someone else he loves?

♥♥♥

Aedan and Dallas are likable characters who are meant for each other. Kenzie is a special girl in more ways than one. You'll like the relationship between Aedan and Kenzie.

There is a subplot involving Aedan's Aunt Peigi and her reborn husband Brian that also keeps Aedan busy.

V. K. Forrest's world in Voracious is somewhat dark and unforgiving. Actions have consequences, and the ending is bittersweet.

Aedan Brigid, 1500 year old vampire and investigator/assassin for the sept, has just returned home for a much needed break. Trying to re-acclimate into society, Aedan brushes the hand of Dallas, a local bar owner and telepath, while trying to pay for his pint and receives a shocking spark with the brush of her hand. Completely unnerved and wanting answers about the connection, Aedan almost starts to follow a quickly retreating Dallas only to be stopped by a chilling phone call from his cousin, a local police officer. A girl had been found – raped, face and body cut up, and a “J” carved into her abdomen – a signature Aedan has been chasing for centuries since he found it on the body of his dead wife. Voracious is a worth a look!

What a fabulous and exciting addition to the Clare Point series! The main characters were likeable, well written and defined, the overall plot was original and not "stale" as some books become in a series, there was just enough humor to balance out the terror, and it held my interest from the beginning to the very end. I can't really say much because I don't like to give away spoilers (I always seem to dip my toe over that line), so I'll just say, if you haven't made up your mind yet about this book or this series, go for it!

This book is a very creative take on vampires. They age, they go in the sunlight, they eat real food, etc. Creative, but not my cup of tea. I want something scary and bad ass, which I didn't see in the 99 pages I read.

High five for creativity, but you lost me with all the changes on vampires.
