I am hopeful !

If all these words are true (and I pray that they are) my life should begin to come into balance.
I have just become an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic.
The care for diabetes has changed so dramatically since my 3 year old son was diagnosed in 1976.
I thought I was going to do great, had the knowledge from taking care of my son.
Ha...was I wrong, 3 months into this and bad control is winning.
But, I must say, with this book read, I am starting to make some good progress.
I hope after reading the other books from you, I will win this life battle and get ' weller ! '.

Thank you for your help.

Very informative and personal account. Have heard about Glycemic Index for years and this took that understanding to a new level with Glycemic Load and how seemingly “healthy” foods may have greater impact than pure sugar on our bodies. If you’ve been struggling with weight loss and nothing seems to work try these concepts in conjunction with intermittent fasting and you may start to see results finally.

Quite helpful, with reasonable information. Useful comparison of glycemic index vs load (though more comprehensive tables would be nice), interesting discussion of insulin resistance, and some good intel on various medications. One (minor but annoying) concern is that Thompson uses US-scales a lot (read: non-metric), and though he does provide a conversion table for the recipes, it would be useful to see something similar for A1C measurements and the like.

Fortunately, I don't have diabetes, but this book really helps me to understand insulin resistance and the negative impact of eating too much starch + the importance of using your muscles, particularly leg muscles, to increase your insulin sensitivity.

This is the second time I've checked it out from the library - the 2nd pass helps the information to sink in more.

I found this book to be very informative and helpful. It explains in a simple, easily understood manner Type 2 Diabetes. What causes it. How to bring your glucose numbers down. Why diet and exercise are so crucial as well as medication. I have changed my diet and even in just a couple of weeks have found some success. My numbers are more consistently in the normal range.

If you have diabetes either type 1 or type 2 you must read this book. The author is an MD who has diabetes and treats diabetics. Really good practical advice on just what Glycemic index and Glycemic load are and how to use them to get you blood sugar under control. If you want to improve your overall health then this is a must read and the companion book he wrote about titled The Sugar Blocker diet. full of practical information on getting healthier.

Author Thompson advocates the elimination of starch from one's diet in the war against insulin resistance and diabetes. Rather than glycemic index, he advocates the glycemic load of a particular food. Other books I have read, use 100 grams of glucose as the standard. Instead, Thompson uses a slice of white bread or how much a serving of a particular food raises insulin levels relative to a slice of white bread.

Overall I like the concept he proposes. However, his tables of glycemic indices are scant, relying on the user to discover which food is really the bad guy(s). There are also contradictions within the book. For example, on page 72, he lists beer as having a glycemic load of 70. On the other hand, his table on page 23 lists beer with a glycemic load of less than 15. While Thompson does list references, better documentation ie. notes in cases such as this would make the work clearer for the reader.

I had been railing against my diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes until I read this book, which explains exactly how diabetes happens (not all my fault), how I can begin to control it by eating less starch (but still eat some sugar...) and why I should exercise and take the meds I'm prescribed(prevent future damage). I no longer feel like a person who has failed to stay healthy, which is a gift.

This is a great read for those of us with Type 2 Diabetes. It is based on research, well referenced, and easy to read and understand.

The diet is easy to remember: No starches and no fruit juices except for tomoto juice. I can live without potatos and pasta, but bread is a real problem for me.

Although I don't like the reason for needing to read this book, I felt it was interesting, informative, and easy to read.

This is the best book about diabetes (and preventing it) that I've ever read. The author not only talks about what other people should do, he actually practices what he preaches as he was diagnosed with diabetes as well. It's a great book that explains in easy-to-read terms what diabetes is, how you get it, how you can prevent it, and what foods to eat to manage it. I highly recommend to anyone currently living with diabetes or with a family member with diabetes and as a guidebook to prevent diabetes and generally eat healthier.
