"My name is Constance and this story starts the day I was ripped apart."
Caught in a battle between two supernatural forces, five junior high students are killed. But Constance, Jonathan, Avery, Maria, and Danielle return from the dead -- and they've changed.
They each carry a piece of a soul stone and with it they have extraordinary powers. Now they can summon weapons from thin air and even start fires with their minds. With these powers comes a connection they never wanted, and coming back from the dead hasn't wiped away the grudges between them. When one of them loses their mind to the power, they are soon caught in a battle against themselves and an enemy that wants to make sure that this time they stay dead.
Stone The Gift is the first in a new Middle Grade series. It is a total of 155 pages.
When she isn't moonlighting as a ninja for the Society of Secrets, R. E. Washington writes YA and Middle Grade books. She loves diving into the world of superheroes and creating worlds where kids can summon fire with their minds and teens traverse the problems of first loves while battling pirates and monsters. She currently resides in the US and graduated from Goddard College with a MFA in Creative Writing.
R.E. Washington is an extremely talented author her writing style was so easy to read and the words flowed so well that before you know it your on the last page wanting more. Her descriptions were not overly done and you were engaged throughout the story. R.E. Washington starts off this book showing us the readers what it is like to be bullied and the effects it has on not just yourself but your close friends. The issue of bullying and the affects it has on young people today is a very important topic and R.E. writing and reactions were very realistic and handled with care and passion. Excellent writing!
So the story starts off around the bullying and Constance telling off a few people for not doing anything when they see this occur. When a teacher approaches the scene he sentences all 5 of the youths to detention, during the dentition chaos breakouts and Constance ends up saving the 4 other youth lives by an unusual manner.
Now Constance, Maria, Avery, Danielle, and Jonathon have to work together to learn to fight and keep each other safe. But can the bullies and bullied work together can they form trust enough to keep each other alive. Can Constance step up and be the leader of this mixed group and keep her friends from killing each other.
The Stone Bearers is a YA Paranormal novel, and I cannot wait for book 2 to be released to see what will happen next to this mixed group of young people. Also like to thank R.E. Washington for giving us at Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy Fanatics R2R Group a copy of your book to review. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA Paranormal novels.
This is a short story that has a potential to be a great middle grader read. This book was surprisingly interesting despite it was for a younger audience. Never did I feel that I was reading book not interesting enough for an adult yet it still was appropriate for young audiences.
The story certainly captures your attention and keeps hold of you to the end. The story didn’t lack for beginning, middle or end despite the length. I didn’t think that it needed to be longer. I only thought I can’t wait for the next adventure.
I did have a few questions.
Overall, I liked this story and can’t wait to read something else from this author.
This is a nice short novel that is really interesting and very enjoyable. There were some bits that annoyed me or that I didn’t quite understand but moving past this it was simply a unique and lovely story that I cannot wait to read more of. It tells the tale of a group of five students who, under normal circumstances, would never run around in the same circle but due to an unfortunate situation they find themselves in a predicament where working against each other will only lead to their own destruction. They’re suddenly thrust into a world unknown to them and must learn how to deal with it all but before they get a chance to get a grip on it all, an evil is waiting to tear them all apart and kill them all once and for all.
One of the things I liked about this story was the characters. I liked how they all had their own unique and different personalities and how it portrays how difficult it is for teenagers to get along unless they simply have to. Washington definitely got these character’s down and I just really loved reading about how it all goes down and how they grow throughout this short story. The only problem I found with the characters was the background description. I just felt a little left behind, especially when it came to the relationships between the characters, most notably between Constance and Maria. But, it is possible to look past this as the story is quite intriguing on its own. There is a uniqueness to the story and I really liked hearing about the different powers and the ways in which they are used and how they reflect on the characters’ traits when they’re not really supposed to. It was really intriguing and definitely made this a quick read for me as I simply wanted to know more! I also enjoyed how it has quite clearly set its self up for a sequel and left the first book on a little bit of a cliffhanger which just makes the reader want to know more. I think that there can be so much more explored within this novel and just think some of the imagination behind it is truly amazing. So, I am waiting with baited breath to read more of this story!
One of the most refreshing things about this novel is how it isn’t focussed on romance between the characters. While that may occur later on in the novel as there is clearly pairings occurring or already there, I like that it isn’t central to the narrative. This story is clearly focussed on friendships between peer groups as opposed to romance and I think that, that is such a refreshing thing as there aren’t that many stories like that around, or not that I’ve yet noticed! I’m definitely interested to see how this pans out as it is always interesting when five different personalities are forced to work together. A bit like how fun it is to stick two people who hate each other in a broken lift!
All in all, this is a decent novel that got me hooked and was a nice, easy read and something that has got me waiting with tender hooks for the next addition to the story. A recommended read to people who enjoy something different and unique and imaginative!
I got this book to read and review from the Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy Fanatics!
My name is Constance and this story starts the day I was ripped apart. “ This was how the book began!
What I liked about it: the beginning, of course. the way the teenagers kept squabbling even when they got their powers– it didn’t change the fact that they were just kids. Maria and her issues made the story more believable-finding you have superpowers doesn’t turn you into a saint. the absence of any love triangles– or even a love interest. It was refreshing to read a YA book without those.
The story will be fun to read by youngsters. A good beginning to surely an interesting series.

I received this book as a Read to Review (R2R) - as always thanks to those hard working folks that allow us to read these books.
This story follows Constance and a group of her would-be new fiends. You ever had a bad first day? Constance can tell you a story that would make your day seem like cake. Her story really starts at the moment she dies. Yup, dies. The price of her coming back to life with her friends? They now have to protect everyone around them...
Pros: Excellent pacing to this story - I couldn't stop reading it. Constance is a character that most of us wish we could be. The person that decides their friend is more important than the fear of the bully. The reactions of the group of kids (Constance, Maria, Avery, Danielle, and Jonathon) are great - fairly realistic kid reactions.
Cons: With the fast pace of this story, while great for a read, does leave a reader a bit wanting. Possibly a little more character depth and relationship building. It is not an overly long story, so I can't fault the character development to much, because honestly for the space used this story is excellent.
I really liked this story. I hope book two can continue the pace while filling in some more detail about the universe this book describes.
This book kept me interested, definitely. It was a nice twist, and I was honestly expecting some sort of Angel book - I wasn't expecting what I read. Although I absolutely enjoyed it. The characters were good, and well developed, and they were each different.
The slight, only thing, that bothered me was that the book would sometimes switch between third person, and first person. Sometimes it would be "I said", other times it would be "Constance said," but even that was easily overlooked in comparison to the whole book. It was amazing and definitely deserves to be recognised along with the author.
The range of powers that you're introduced to, and how they're triggered is good too, and falls in line with a lot of lore about powers - being connected to a certain emotion, although it changes with each different legend and myth - but I liked the direction this book went in, and once I actually had five minutes to sit down and read it, I didn't want to stop at all.
The whole concept behind the book is original to me - I've never come across a book similar, so that definitely helped me keep reading. It was all new, I had no idea what to expect, and I wasn't comparing it to another book I'd read. It was completely perfect.
SYNOPSIS: 8th grade is hard enough as it is, but when you add dying to the mix, you get Constance's life.
Constance and her friends, Avery and Maria, used to be average 8th graders, trying to survive Middle School and stay away from Danielle and her boyfriend, Jonathan. But when they all get detention for being in the halls, life couldn't be worse for Constance, right? Wrong. When the group of five get caught in the crossfire of a supernatural battle, they are killed, but Tyler, who is in on the battle that killed them, saves them all. Now they carry part of the Stone to live. The price? Save the world without going insane.
REVIEW: I received this book in the GoodReads Read To Review.
As I started this book, I felt is would be interesting how the author could craft the story, that begins and reads like a Realistic Fiction, into a Paranormal adventure! The first few pages were about how Constance's friend, Maria was being bullied as Danielle watched. Nonetheless, the author pulled it off and turned the story on its head when the group was in detention. It was when the battle begun in the Botanical Greenhouses that I felt like the author was trying to write the story in a similar way to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson And The Olympians. The odd, yet humorus chapter beginnings in some, the similar idea of an average person becoming involved with supernatural and has to be the almighty saver of the world, and how a close ally turns on them all. However, Washington manages to write a magnificent story and keep her idea standing apart from Riordan's.
I was enthralled with this story, I finished it in one night and I couldn't try to sleep unless I finished it, it kept me up! But as much as I loved it, it ended wayyy too soon!!! I felt that the novel was a little too fast paced and had so much potential to stretch out and be a long yet exciting book. There were some key details cut out, and more action wouldn't have been a bad thing. In the end, I loved this book but was dying for more in the end! Recommended for Riordan fans, those who love Riordan but find him a little long winded, and any paranormal adventure fans!! Oh how I hope for a sequel!!
This was a surprisingly good book. I found the storyline different from most YA I've read. I liked the fact that it had its Paranormal aspects, but was set in modern times and that it manages to bring to light the struggles of everyday junior high school students and their insecurities.
Constance starts out being shy and unpopular, since she's new at the school, but throughout the book she develops into a brave leader. Accepting her responsibility for saving the others and trying to keep them together to fight the bad guys. Maria, was the typical troubled one, as soon as she got a chance she started her revenge. The others needed to be more developed, but taking into consideration the length of the book I understand why it did not happen. Maybe in a second book they all can be developed fully. I so enjoyed Constance and Tyler's interactions.
The book was well written and the story was well paced. The fight scene at the school was anticlimactic and it needed a bit more action. And the world of the Tutelars needed to be explained more. Maybe in a second book these will improve.
All in all, a fun, quick read. I will definitely read a second book.
Thanks again for the opportunity given to me by the folks of R2R!
First, I really liked the Stone Bearers. Although, it was much too short and I was disappointed that there was not more to the story. However, that is a good thing as it really captured and held my attention. It had so much potential of of being an awesome young adult series. The character development was great, the plot exciting and easy to follow. Great Job, R.E. Washington. I can't wait to read more. My niece loves the Percy Jackson series and this would be right up her alley. I definitely would recommend it to younger readers. Thank you for the opportunity to review it.
As always, thanks goes out to R2R for my copy of this book! I think it's a fun, quick read. I think it is maybe meant for a younger reading age, more younger teen, like 13 & up. It's well written, it's fun, and I LOVE that it touches on real life things deal with- bullying, teen peer pressure, sneaking out (& yea there consequences, HA!), and learning to work together as a team, even with people you don't like. (that happens in adult life too!) so all in all, good book & fun read!
Well, first of all let me say.. I think this book is wonderful! Just not for me. I think this book is wonderful for kids, it has a great storyline and I truly believe I would have loved it if I was around 12-ish.
It’s about a small group of kids who are forced to work together and make huge decisions because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. They have to face their fears and they have to face each other. I guess the thing I liked about this book was that the main characters were all so different and not all of them wanted to work together and they didn’t all like each other! They’re a messy bunch, but a messy bunch who make this book work.
I don’t think the book is ready for print though. I think it needs to be a little bit longer. Like the training sessions could totally be extended. I know a lot of young people love those scenes. I think the relationships need more writing, more conversations and stuff. I think the whole story needs an overall more! But in a good way, I think the story has it’s basis, it just needs that extra flare to make it special!
Bullying is a difficult topic to address in a young adult novel, particularly when trying to balance authenticity with an interesting storyline, but Washington really manages this very well in her novel. I was engaged in the interplay between the characters and how their relationships evolve over time. In particular, I enjoy novels that highlight the reluctant hero, as Constance evolves into in this book.
Unfortunately, this book read as a first draft of a novel - interesting, good ideas, but not enough development. If Washington spent more time rewriting and editing and fully building her ideas, I think this has the potential to be a truly great novel. In its current form, the dialogue is predictable and story has too much “telling” and not enough “showing.”
I think Washington has lots of potential and really great ideas, but wish she had spent the requisite time revising her novel before moving it to publication.
I read this as a Read to Review. There was nothing wrong with this book. It was well written, but just wasn't a fit for me. Nothing that I can put my finger on to say exactly what it was. However, I do think that it would be something that my daughter may enjoy more since she is around the same age as in the book. I just couldn't connect with the characters, maybe that was what the problem was.
Thanks R2R for the opportunity to read this story. It was thoroughly enjoyable and ended too soon. It seems more like a prequel to a series, then a stand alone novel. The story served as a great introduction to this group of teeangers that were brought together through unexpected and paranormal circumstances and learned quickly the importance of working as a team. I look forward to seeing this team form and the characters develop as they try to plan for whatever they will face next.
This was an excellent book. I picked it up and couldnt put it down until I was done with it:)
The characters are well developed and believable, granted the story was very fast paced, but you still got to know them and get attached. The concept for this story was definitly different and I really liked that. It left me wanting more when I finished and I cant wait to read the next installment. I would definitly recommend this book:)
I really liked this one. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough! I would have liked to have more detail, more exposition.. just more! This was well-written. I enjoyed it... If you're looking for a short YA read, pick this up - you won't regret it!
I found this book much easier to get into than Burnt Children, which surprised me as I had expected it to be the other way around when I first received this book - once again, this proves first impressions can be wrong. It was an engaging MG-YA read with interesting characters and a flowing narrative style. I love that Washington starts off with the universal and realistic topic of being bullied and then goes into the more fantastical world. It was a really nice way of setting up the premise and made the book extremely easy to get into from the outset.
The characters were realistic and I liked that they didn't start out friends from the outset but were pulled together and didn't always get on. I am definitely interested to find out where the next book takes us. There were a couple of confusing aspects that have already been picked up by other reviewers, however these flaws do not outweigh the novel overall.
I think that this novel shows a lot of promise and while it could be tightened in places, is a decent read.
The start of this novel was a little bit slow for me, I like to be immediately hooked when reading a novel. However it soon picked up when the group of kids found themselves in the greenhouse.
The characters are well though out and I do feel the reader looks up the character of Constance due to the self-sacrifice she is willing to take for her friends and people we would class as bullies. The group of kids are all realistic and each have a different element to add to the group.
I loved the authors writing style, the words just flowed off the page and this made it a very easy read. I was able to read this book in just over a day due to the addictive writing style the author has.
This book has left me wanting more and I can not wait to read book two in the series.
A copy of this book was received for free and all opinions expressed are my own through reading it.
