Dead bodies, an attempted kidnapping, impersonations, numerous red herrings and dead ends, searching for clues all over New York City - Potter finally locates the heiress hiding in her own house. Interesting plot but hard to follow since Potter speaks as though we should have followed all the twists and turns by ourselves. But we are not as smart as he is.
Unfortunately for my gothic paperback collection this one did not age well. Pity, because the writing style is good but the problematic content out weighs the story. It was first published in 1958 and has a big dose of homophobia in the beginning.
A short, but convoluted mystery with a most unusual ending. In 48 hrs a young girl must be found. She disappeared 3 mos. earlier. She was a bright, industrious, very poor girl who put her way through college only to graduate and disappear. She was the only child of the first marriage of man who became very wealthy, had married again and had two other children. They are all grown now and as their father, they were harsh, selfish, indulgent people. Then there was a cousin who emulated his uncle. When the older man knew he was dying, he made out a will that split his fortune between his cousin and two offspring of the second marriage, but only if his daughter of the first marriage did not claim her inheritance. She had refused his offer of financial assistance earlier. Then the cousin and other children would inherit a much smaller amount.
Mr Potter, a sleuth by hobby, is pulled into the search for Mary 48 hours before the deadline is up. Complicating the situation are two murders and one attempted murder. Then there is a little love blooming between the lawyer of the deceased and the best friend of Mary.
