Dreszcz przeleciał mi po plecach. Znalazłam się chyba w najbardziej opuszczonym miejscu na świecie. Przez chwilę wydawało mi się, że z daleka słyszę śpiew. Ale to wiatr gwizdał w szczelinach. Coś we mnie wołało: UCIEKAJ, BEL! UCIEKAJ, BEL! UCIEKAJ, BEL!

I really enjoyed Dark Ride by Caroline Green and it is her debut novel for young adults and is a supernatural romance thriller. I am not normally an avid reader of supernatural thrillers but Caroline Green really made me want to read it until the end.

Bel and her Mother have moved to a rundown seaside town because her Mother has just separated from her husband but they have not revealed it to Bel just yet.

Bel is so lonely as she had to leave all her friends behind when they both moved and there is no wi-fi as her Mother has been too preoccupied to set it up for her.

Bel decides to explore her new surroundings and comes across an abandoned fairground and befriends a young boy called Luka who is Croatian. This old fairground is to be demolished to make way for a new marina.

Bel falls madly in love with Luka when he takes her for a ride on the ghost train and she knows she can always find him at the fairground on his own. Luka tells Bel that his Mother died under suspicious circumstances and both Bel and Luka are on a quest to find evidence to prove it one way or another.

I love the way Caroline describes the smells and description of this rundown seaside town and the people who inhabit it.

The ending is so heartbreaking it will make you shed a tear just like I did. There are so many thrills, romance and sleuthing going on to really engross the reader.

Being from the U.S. I found this difficult to understand since it was largely written in U.K. slang. Most of the words were not even available in my Kindle's dictionary. I found the supernatural element too far fetched and ridiculous. A ghost is a spirit, and they are not a physical being. The atmosphere of the abandoned fairground and romance were nicely done. And it was a clean-read.

Ugh! This story had so much potential and I actually was enjoying it at the beginning but it gets to unrealistic and you just can’t make yourself believe it,the characters get so basic and don’t have unique characteristics.

This story had so much potential - there's so many ways this story could've gone that it didn't explore which was really disappointing.

When Bel moves to the seaside town of Slumpton with her mother she isn't happy. She didn't want to leave her friends behind but worse of all her father hasn't come with them. Bel doesn't like her new home, she finds the cold, grey and run down town depressing and she is incredibly lonely. That is until she meets Luka and follows him to the old fairground. But is Luka really all he seems and what caused the mysterious disappearance of his mother? As they begin to investigate they are drawn into a dark and dangerous world.

If you have ever been to a run down British seaside resort you will know exactly what Slumpton looks like. Caroline Green has perfectly captured the atmosphere - the run down B&Bs, the old fairground, the steamy cafes and the cold grey British weather. As I was reading I felt like I was there in Slumpton right alongside Bel and it was easy to put yourself into her situation. Bel is a realistic teenager, she can be moody and mouthy but you are drawn to her and feel her loneliness like it was your own. She is the kind of character you can't help but like and I enjoyed spending time in her head. I don't want to say much about Luka for fear of giving spoilers so I'll just tell you I loved him and let you read the book for yourself to find out why.

The story certainly lives up to it's name and takes you on a Dark Ride covering difficult issues including family breakups and modern day slavery. At less than 200 pages this is an easy book to devour in one sitting and in fact once you get started it is almost impossible to put down. This is an impressive debut and I can't wait to see what Caroline Green comes up with next. She has definitely been added to my list of auto-buy authors.

Dark Ride is only a little book, at just under 200 pages l thought this book would be a nice little quick average read. Dark Ride is actually so much more than that!
Bel is a character who l straight away liked from the first few lines. Her humour is something which l really enjoyed in this book and it mixed well with other parts of the book, for example it was nice to have the humour amongst the tension. The humour also made this book feel very real and l never doubted anything in this book for a second.

The relationships in this book were also something which l really enjoyed about Dark Ride. Both the relationship Bel had with her mum and dad were very different and also interesting to read about. The way Bel thought about her mum was one which l think a lot of people her age can understand as mother and daughter relationships can both be loving but also tense and full on at times. Luka was another great character who played a big part in this story. I loved how Caroline slowly revealed small things about him.

There were a few little twists throughout this book which really got me gripped to this book and wanting to find out what happens more, l didn’t see a lot of it coming at all! The storyline is definitely one which is unique and keeps you guessing throughout the book.

Overall Dark Ride is a must read, you will be engrossed from the first page finding yourself both laughing, biting your nails and reading as fast as you can to find out what happens next! Caroline is a very talented author who has created a unique story that flows very well, l will definitely be looking out for more books by her. Do NOT give this one a miss!

Guest Review by Beth

I found the idea of this novel really intriguing and was really glad to give it a go. Bel and her mother seem less than happy in the uninspiringly named seaside town of Slumpton that has become their new home. Bel misses her dad, misses her friends and doesn’t understand why they have to be in Slumpton anyway. In time, she begins to explore the area including the disused fairground and eventually meets Luka.

Bel and Luka’s ‘adventures’ if they can be called that lead them to sinister discoveries and it’s an area I’m not sure has been covered in much depth in literature before which is really interesting to read about. Aside from the supernatural elements of the novel, the real hard-hitting discoveries are what made it for me. The novel covers all manner of issues from family break up to human trafficking and more.

Bel’s character is really well constructed and believable. Her confusion and anger draw her to Luka and she finds comfort in being able to support Luka in his quest for his lost mother. Luka’s character is equally compelling, dark and brooding, which makes him more than attractive to Bel. Even more powerful than the creation of the characters is the town of Slumpton itself. The setting is more striking and interesting than any other feature of this novel and Caroline Green should be commended for it more than anything else. Every single place in the novel felt real, genuine and in many places extremely foreboding.

Loved this and loved how all the contentious and serious issues were dealt with.

welcome addition to our site book list, sent from Piccadilly Press, I was eager to read this. I hadn’t heard about Caroline Green before I read Dark Ride, but I am going to be eagerly looking for more work following the read.

From the minute the book started I was pulled in and I couldn’t put it down. The writing was easy to read and follow and that made my enjoyment of the book even better.

The main story was the love story between the mysterious Luka and Bel. However there are two back stories, Bel’s Dad and Lili, which added to the overall feel of the story. There were moments that were breathtaking, the fall off the rollercoaster and Bel in the Dolphin Marina.

It was the end of this book that had me reaching for the tissues. It was so sad, although I won’t say why as I don’t want to ruin the book for you.

Dark Ride is a book that I will be reading again. As a first novel by Caroline Green she has started well and I have a feeling she will be one to watch in the future.

Move over Stephenie Meyer, Caroline Green has landed!

I give Dark Ride a much earned and deserved 5/5 – although I would give it more if I could!

The character of Bel is the one we follow throughout the novel as she and her mother move to a new town, one she isn't that fond of, she misses her old home and her dad. She stumbles upon a fairground after meeting a boy previously at the bus stop who leaves her an 'admit one' ticket.

After finding this fairground, she finds a boy, Luka with a mysterious secret - so secret he doesn't even know about. I'm actually really proud of myself for figuring it out before it's explained in the novel - and I'm kind of confused about how certain events take place with him being what he is? Though the story line is entertaining and romantic, it had a serious message behind it which I won't spoil for you.

Caroline Green made me fall in love with the somewhat mysterious Luka. He seemed both innocent, troubled and intriguing at the same time - which I really liked. I don't know how I personally feel about the ending because I'm convinced the story didn't have to have stopped where it did! There could have been more added! I'm sure of it!

Maybe even a sequel? Well, I could hope!

I really liked this one. Caroline Green managed to capture my attention from the first chapter - it's fun, has great characters and an intriguing mystery.

Bel is great - she's funny and I liked how much she wanted to help Luka. I guessed what was going on with him but I loved how the mystery unfolded, and I thought the two had great chemistry. There was also some really great atmosphere in the book and there were a couple of scene where the tension truly makes this one gripping reading.

I also really liked the storyline involving Bel's father - how this affects her relationship with her mother and how she has to come to terms with what was happening to her family - I thought it really added to the story.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what Caroline Green writes next. This was a quick, but very enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book. I don't know why but I wasn't expecting much from it, but I got so much more out of it that I thought.

Bel is a great typical teenage girl character, she isn't happy with being uprooted to a new seaside town (Slumpton...and lets face it, it doesn't sound great) and of course she likes a boy.

Luka is said boy, he is a mysterious character who is very troubled and Bel wants to help him, but by helping him she finds herself in some dangerous situations.
I also really enjoyed all the family orientated parts of this book. It deals with the difficulties of a parents divorce which is really well handled. Bel has lots of new and hard situations thrown her way and she reacts and dels with them beautifully.
There are some great twists and turns throughout and I didn't see them coming at all.
There is tension, heartbreak and drama around every corner!
A great read!

Well, to be fair, this book surpassed my expectations. I expected a generic supernatural romance and got a not-as-generic-as-i-would-have-thought supernatural romance. It was an enjoyable read, and I might revisit it at some point, but if you're looking for a deep, complicated story arch with lots of character development, I suggest you look elsewhere. The plot was no predictable per se, but not-far into the second half, I had kinda figured out what the big reveal would be.

So yeah, enjoyable and well written, but look elsewhere if you're going for something deep and heavy.

I read this more than 5 years ago, sometime around the age of 11-14 maybe. So, I enjoyed this from what I remember, it's good for a teenage reader - typical love story where the main characters shouldn't fall in love but do (there's other stuff happening too but I don't remember).

If I gave it a go now, I would probably have to knock off a star or two, so I'll keep this as it is because I did enjoy it then. Maybe someday I'll try and read it again

I really liked this YA book with its quirky heroine, who is trying to come to terms with living in a tiny seaside resort and having to leave behind her former life and all her friends in London. Everything has changed for her, but meeting a strange boy in a deserted fairground helps her to adjust in ways she'd never expected ... I'm hoping this is the first in a series!

Winner of the Waverton Good Read Children's Award - I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sometimes children's books are better than the adult ones, and I enjoyed this more than the majority of the adult novels in the WGRA this year! It deals with lots of different issues, doesn't have too happy an ending but also not too miserable either. Would definitely recommend it!

This was a quick, enjoyable read. The book had an air of mystery about it and I found it intriguing. I didn't have the highest of expectations when I started it as I was stumped at what to read next and just chose the first thing I found. I was pleased to find that I liked it.

Charming story about a young girl who moves to a seaside town and finds the local fairground may hold some dark secrets. Aimed at YA/young audience, well-written, contemporary and believable.

It was more romance than mystery - the plot didn't have much mystery to it - there wasn't much mystery solving, it was more of a character builder/romance story.
