This photo book documents the loss of a couple dozen fine and solid buildings in downtown Milwaukee, demolished mostly during the 1960s and '70s during what we used to call "urban renewal." That scraping of the land left urban scars, such as surface parking lots, some of which remain. A growing interest in historic preservation will prevent similar mistakes in the future.
Even with some fine buildings gone, Milwaukee's downtown enjoys a strong mix of historic and interesting buildings, many dating to the 1880s to early 1900s. And that leaves us with a lament of the missing buildings and an appreciation of the ones that remain.
