This is a well written and presented book. The text is clear and easy to follow and the photographs are good and convey the techniques well. The book is basic and is probably best suited for beginning bo staff students. A background in Japanese language and/or martial arts will help a reader connect with the material. Recommended for those looking for an introductory text for the bo staff.

This book is a testimony of Fumio Demura’s skill. It’s amazing how much information is packed into such a small book, and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the basics of the Bo. The only reason I don’t give this book five stars is because the fusion of Japanese names with English instructions will probably have many people flipping back and forth between pages.

The original! Just heard that the great teacher DEMURA Fumio passed away. I gained much from all the knowledge he shared through his books and videos. Not many know that he was Pat Morita's stunt double and the character of Mr. Miyagi was based on him!

Written originally in 1976, it still is one of the very best in self-instruction of the 6-foot 1 1/4" "stick". Cold Steel sells a very affordable 4-foot wax wood stick (called a yon shaku-bo) that is a perfect selection, and is a completely legal item to carry hiking, traveling, in your car. The book is very easy to follow, comprehensive and a great source to get the fundamentals of kobu-do bo-jitsa katas.

A good primer on the fundamentals of the bo. Like other books by the same author, this book maximizes the limited medium of print instruction, and gives the viewer quite a bit of information in a small volume.

For beginners in martial arts, a good start. For advanced martial artists there is detail and explanation to create an entire Bo curriculum. Master Demura is the real deal.
