read this at archive.org as it is criminally out-of-print but definitely worth the $60-80 it goes for on the used market.
it is more or less the definitive tome on Prince, comprehensive, insightful and exhaustive, up to Lovesexxxy. the only way it could have been better was if Prince was a Primary Source. A gear/studio list would have also been nice but most of what he used is peppered throughout the book.
D.S.M.R. covers each album sufficiently in addition to the side projects and shelved, apocryphal albums that have more or less entered into Prince and highlights a lot of Twin Cities minutiae that only a local would know about ( I had no idea that First Ave was called Sam's/Uncle Sam's...)
Why this book is so well-regarded amongst Prince fanatics is obvious and my goal is to snag a physical copy before the used prices become too exorbitant. Really is a crying shame a newer edition has not been republished.
