Will Nixon only has three days to whip up the perfect NYC family Christmas to impress his twin sister's future in-laws. By chance he meets the charming and possibly perfect Hudson Smith, an out of town business man, who agrees to be his "personal shopper" in order to get everything done. In the middle of a whirlwind of prep, Will and Hudson find themselves doing more than shopping - they might be falling in love.
Tere Michaels unofficially began her writing career at the age of four when she learned that people got paid to write stories. It seemed the most perfect and logical job in the world and after that, her path was never in question. (The romance writer part was written in the stars—she was born on Valentine’s Day.)
It took thirty-six years of “research” and “life experience” and well… life… before her first book was published but there are no regrets (she doesn’t believe in them). Along the way, she had some interesting jobs in television, animation, arts education, PR, and a national magazine—but she never stopped believing she would eventually earn her living writing stories about love.
Her home base is a small town in New Jersey, very near NYC, a city she dearly loves. She shares her life with her husband, her son—who is also her personal trainer—and an exceedingly spoiled cat. Her spare time is spent watching way too much sports programming, going to the movies and for long walks/runs in the park, reading, and doing yoga.
Nothing makes her happier than knowing she made a reader laugh or smile or cry. It’s the purpose of sharing her work with people. She loves hearing from fans and fellow writers and is always available for speaking engagements, visits, and workshops. She teaches regularly at SavvyAuthors, as well as running a private consulting and developmental editing business.
"Whirlwind romance" perfectly fits to this great little story - or how to make insta-love believable... These two men belong together and they simply knew it! I was impressed with the writing.Though told from Will`s point of view I could "hear" the wheels turning in Hudson`s head and how meeting Will turned his life upside down.Adorable characters,sweet/light story, witty dialogue and feelings so loud and clear I thought I could touch them... It took me a bit longer to read this book - I re-read chapters, passages and parts of the dialogue right away, the biggest compliment I can give.Loved it!
My first Tere Michaels book and I wasn't disappointed, what a sweet gem. Will is an author who is having issues completing his novel. More nightmares are coming his way, Veronica, his problematic sister lands him in a mess. Organizing a last minute Christmas dinner for the family has been dumped on his shoulders. Will is in a conundrum, shopping isn't his forte and has no idea what needs to be done. So luckily, super smooth and strikingly elegant Hudson enters the picture and comes to the rescue. A real pro in the shopping department and just what Will needs. The writing is fantastic because the instant love/attraction between the guys was believable and the romance is lovely. Ooh and the sexiness is hot, very!
4.5 stars How did I get so lucky to read two wonderful books in a row? Yes, I liked this book very much, the situation Will finds himself in and the way he went about it, simply endearing. What took away part of my fun - and in the end this little half star - was the fact, that I early on guessed the way the story was moving on. Nevertheless, it would be nice, if I don't have to wait that long for the next book by this author.
Sometimes peer pressure is a good thing! ;) This book was "gently" recommended to me, and I gave in and read. It was really cute, fun, sweet and even if it was a bit predictable, it was just what I needed. Thanks Anke, Sims and Vio! :)
I think the main reason I didn’t love this book had to do with Hudson. He was just not a very likable guy to me. He was a bit boring. And when the big reveal came I liked him even less.
The story itself was okay and Will was likable enough. It did have a nice Christmas setting, but the writing never pulled me in. And the relationships between all of them felt very unnatural. There were a lot of things that had me:
I mean, working for the family company means that when you quit, you lose everything. Your job, your car, but also your home. Hudson and Roan didn’t even like their jobs. So I kept thinking they were just a couple of wusses for putting up with their family for so long.
It wasn’t horrible, but it didn’t get me all smiling either.
Very cute and funny - I'm glad I didn't let the cover put me off completely (I'm again wondering at the bookcovers you find in romance. They just don't do the books any justice! This was one of the times I was glad to have an e-reader, so no one (including myself) had to see this cover.)
What a fun book this was to read. This was my introduction to Tere Michaels and I'm hooked. Will Nixon is a writer with a case of writer's block when his twin sister calls and asks him to throw a miracle Christmas to impress her fiancee's parents. Nothing will keep Will from helping his sister out in her time of need but with only three days to pull it together his head is spinning. Will meets Hudson Smith in an upscale clothing store and their lives are changed forever. Hudson is a wealthy, urbane businessman with impeccable taste who offers to help Will with his Christmas mission. The story is told from Will's POV which is quirky and far from serious. The story flowed beautifully and the characters were put together well. The balance between Will and Hudson made for a feel good story with a HEA end. Ms Michaels witty romance story will leave you with a smile no matter the time of year you read it.
There is something inexplicably adorable about these two men. Yes, it is an insta-love story which I generally dislike, but Will and Hudson's flirting and quick dive into coupledom was fun to read. Will's writer's block is getting the better of him when an emergency Christmas dinner (who knew there was such a thing!) is thrown in his path. Unfortunately, Will is not a good cook, has no real style skills, and his home is decorated with action figures and chairs shaped like leaves. Fortunately, Hudson is good at so very many things – and he looks great in a suit. I really liked this cheerful little Christmas story.
This is a fun little story with some very appealing characters, a plot twist I didn't expect, and a sweet ending. Not slow or emotional like my favorite books by this author, but it would be a great pick-me-up story to look at after some angsty, emotional read.
While I hate shopping with a passion, I love reading about other people indulging, especially when they know what they’re doing. The fact that only one of the two men in this story, Hudson of British descent, is a shopping connoisseur made it extra funny. The second man, Will of the desperately-in-need-of-help kind, goes along with everything Hudson suggests. Will behaves like I might if I should ever be in his situation – which I thankfully won’t because I neither have a twin sister nor are any of my siblings single and in danger of foisting a new fiancé/fiancée on me. With some very nice and some very nasty - naughty is too positive a description for them - family members, an intense and immediately acted-upon attraction between Will and Hudson, and some rather unexpected but enlightening revelations at the end, ‘Personal Shopper” made for an exciting read.
Will is a playful man who knows what he wants – and it’s not sophistication. He is a horror writer who prefers unhappy endings (as do his fans, luckily), likes his action figures and unusual furniture, and has decided he does not fit into any preconceived ideas of what a thirty-year-old man should be like. When his twin asks for help with impressing her future in-laws, Will has no idea how he is supposed to pull it off but jumps into the project with the dedication only a brother can manage.
When Will runs into Hudson in a clothing store, he enlists the very clearly classy man’s help, but it soon develops into more. The stranger seems to know everything about clothing, decorations, design, and anything else that Will needs to help out his sister. And his British accent is to die for. But not everything is as it seems. By the time it is Christmas Day and the relatives descend on Will’s apartment, more than one revelation disturbs the peace of the “sophisticated” family holiday celebration Will had been planning for. The events leave him reeling, and me a little shocked.
If you like men who meet and instantly “click”, if a holiday romance with unexpected consequences is your thing, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that is as funny and sweet as it is hot, then you will probably like this novella as much as I did. Now I have to reread it to find all the clues I know are there but missed entirely on the first go-through. Well done, Tere Michaels!
So there's Will, an author who is trying to help his twin. Then he meets Hudson, who becomes his personal shopper. I think there's flirt, and date, and well, sex. Honestly, it's a little bit blurry in the middle for me. Maybe, I'm not in the mood for holiday story as much as I think. Maybe, I think Hudson is a bit blah as a character (even if I find Will a bit adorable). Maybe I just don't have the chemistry with this one. All I can feel is that this story is a bit flat. OH, except the "twist" near the end (). But overall, this actually a forgettable story for me *shrugs*.
I love Tere Michaels’ books and Personal Shopper did not disappoint. This holiday novella was a delight to read. Set in New York City, Will Nixon is on a mission: create the perfect Christmas dinner for his sister and her soon-to-be in-laws at his apartment. Despite being gay, Will knows nothing about entertaining, but while shopping he runs into Hudson Smith and enlists his help in getting everything he needs, including Hudson in his bed!
Personal Shopper is one of those great books that even though it is labeled as a holiday story, you could read it anytime of the year and still be enamored with it. Will and Hudson are the perfect foils for one another, and their chemistry? Off the charts. Add in enchanting secondary characters like Will’s hippie parents, his twin sister and a plot that seemingly is going one way, but veers and goes the opposite (with charming consequences) and you have a 5 Diva read.
While I am always recommending Tere Michaels’ Faith and Fidelity series, it seems now I will also have to add in Personal Shopper to my recommend list.
Sooooo cute, great, great dialogue. I didn't mind the insta-love!, the boys sold it to me, but the whole sister/cousin/boyfriend part of the story seemed like something from... I don't know... nineteenth century? Contrived? Still, this was a great story, I wouldn't mind reading more about these men again... I liked Will a lot, which is understandable, because he is the POV character. There wasn't enough page time to really get to know Hudson, but we do know that he is hot, thoughtful and caring and great for Will. What more could you want? The secondary characters didn't have much page time either, but Will's mom made me laugh. Recommended.
Will and Hudson were amazing together, they were sweet and so so hot. Will's sister needs to impress her in-laws with a wonderful family Christmas, so she calls on her brother. Will has no idea how to plan a 'family Christmas' and he only has 2 days. While he is shopping he meets Hudson, who impresses will with his style. Will asks Hudson to help him put the whole thing together. There is a surprise ending that was a little off for me but I still enjoyed the story.
When things seem too good too be true, odds are, something's up. Will would do anything for his twin sister, including pulling together a fancy Christmas at the last minute. Meeting Hudson, a beautiful, rich business with a ton of taste, makes everything even better. The story was lovely, and imbues a sense of, in the terms of Sheriff Black, hope.
A quick, fun read with a Christmassy theme. With this type of stories, where everything happens in 2-3 days it’s a bit difficult for me to fall in love with the book. You get hit with a lot of things, but nothing is truly developed, or if it is, it’s not believable. This is why Personal Shopper is not exactly my favorite kind of story, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless.
Cute and fluffy, what you'd expect for a holiday themed book. Will is snarky and funny. Hudson however is a bit of a dud. Don't really get the attraction. I gave it 3 stars because TM knows how to write dialog but the story line was nothing special.
Cute Christmas story with a twist that I sort of saw coming in my peripheral vision but could still appreciate it when it arrived. What was with all the missing words though?
Will is trying to arrange a super classic sort of Christmas for his sister and meets Hudson while shopping. Hudson is an expert in all sorts of decoration stuff and he becomes Will's personal shopper. There's an ulterior motive behind all this, but as expected they fall in love and lust together.
This was an okay book for me. Will appeared to be too neurotic. Buying a whole lot of furniture and cutlery for impressing potential in laws was a bit too much for me! And how did Hudson stalk Will exactly to that shop?
Anyways the romance is okay. Sex is good. Its a HFN.
Something about TM's books always manage to tickle me just right. This one is funny, sexy as hell and damn, even the insta-love seemed plausible given the family history. (I can't fault their explanation at all given that my mom & stepdad married after knowing each other less than 3 weeks and are still together more than 40 years later.)
I'll start by saying I don't like the cover, not sure really why but I SHOULD say it has something to do with the fact that I've already read a short novella (an okay one) with this cover.. Then I discovered another one! (all 3 by MLR Press). I don't get why use the same cover several times.. After I got THAT out of my system - since I just finished the Faith, Love & Devotion series and LOVED it -it was obvious I would try more of Tere's books - this was my first try.
I had a REAL struggle with this one. I started reading it, fell asleep TWICE before I decided to put it down at 36%. Then I moved on to the next novella I had on my list and finished it (a bit disappointed) I went to sleep only to wake up at about 3 am feeling bad I didn't give it enough of a chance. I felt Tere deserved I finished before I pass my judgement and since I couldn't fall back asleep I gave it my full attention and finished it.
I can't say that finishing this novella made it better, I've recently realized that if I don't like a certain novel at about 30% it won't get better, or if it would, not enough to make it worth my time bitching to myself why the hell I'm wasting my time reading something I don't really feel like reading while I have an ENDLESS list of books to read, probably better. So I guess what I'm trying to say is while I initially wanted to give this one 2½ stars I'm going with 3 stars and that only because of a certain twist near the end that made this novella more "real" somehow (though at the same time it became totally UNreal.. hard to explain without spoilering THE HELL out of this one).
The novella is told from Will's POV. I didn't like Will at all, I'm not even sure why, but he was just so plain and uninteresting I couldn't be bothered with his opinion about anything and everything and wasn't very impressed with how much he was turned on by Hudson (and also felt the need to express his attraction to him all the time..). So back to the plot.. Will's twin sister calls him 2 days before Christmas to ask him to organize a nice dinner for the family including her new soon to be husband and his disapproving parents. Since they are filthy rich he should make it "extra nice".
Will might be gay but he isn't the Martha Stuart gay.. he is just a guy that has NO IDEA how to handle this bomb that fell on him while he is trying (not very successfully) to finish the book he is writing with killing off the main hero as his fans (and editor) demand...
On his first stop to buy Christmas presents he stumbles upon Hudson, a British hunk with an impeccable taste. Hudson offers Will to help him out with the shopping and organizing since he has too days off till he flies back to his family abroad. Hudson was a nice enough guy, I could have liked him but somehow the way he took over everything felt a bit, well, odd.. also his being filthy rich himself made it quite surprising he could do so much around the house, including cooking (when he admitted he lives out of restaurants and takeaways most of the year).
Close to the ending of the novella we finally meet the family and while we do there is also some sort of a twist (which I guess is quite predictable..) yet the way things end is SO unreal and so, I don't know, STRANGE, that I didn't know how to react to it.. Yeah it was a happy ending but in a way it wasn't something that made any real sense.. It reminded me a little of the second installment of Faith, Love & Devotion (Jim and Griffin's novel) but made in a less reasonable way..
I'm giving this one 3 stars but I think it's quite generous, maybe too generous considering the struggle I had to finish. It won't discourage me from trying more of Tere books though.. I loved Faith, Love & Devotion and I truly consider this one a "bad fluke" (even if I haven't a clue if it is..)
This was a very enjoyable story about Will, whose twin Veronica called him in a panic asking him to host a Christmas event at his condo for her future in-laws. Problem was that Will was trying to meet a deadline for his latest book and his bachelor pad was far from being satisfactory as a place to make an impression on rich people flying in from Paris. He starts by entering an exclusive men's shop to do some gift shopping and there he meets Hudson, a very sexy, very sophisticated Brit with a mega smile and dynamic body. They strike up a conversation and end up shopping together, having lunch together and ultimately having sex together.
What follows is two days of intense shopping, sex and romance. The plot takes a nice twist as Christmas day arrives, but I'm not putting the spoilers in this review. Suffice it to say that by the end of the story, we do get to see a HEA, for both Will and his twin sister.
I really enjoyed this because the MC's were really great together, the sex was hot, and the story was a light read which hit me perfect after some of the really dramatic stories I've read lately. Highly recommend.
I was surprised by how much enjoyed this book, considering there was a definite element of insta-love there. I think it was made palatable by the excellent writing and Will's narrative voice, which I really enjoyed.
One thing that niggled though, as an English reader, was that Hudson Smith is not a very likely name for an upper class Englishman, and that his speech didn't sound particularly English either. It's not that he came across as American at any point - just that there wasn't really any English dialect either. It made Hudson seem a little colourless in comparison to Will. It probably won't bother other readers, though.
Ummm? I don't know how I'm supposed to say this, but Personal Shopper was sorely lacking in the quality that I have come to associate with the name Tere Michaels. I didn't gel with Hudson and his British-ness (which I usually find incredibly hawt!) or with Will and his shy, inelegant flirting (He came off kinda bummy, but with some money). I was frowning the entire time he was shopping and for the reason Will was helping his sister. The aura of the book also didn't feel like the holidays even with the tree and decorations. Not recommended.
