How do I put this? This was such a splendid read, I'm utterly speechless on how the story ended. It wasn't as good as I thought, yet it was wonderful in an entirely different way. The novel was about the main character, simply, growing up. Sparking emotion and memories through you as you turn the page. Every section makes you feel exactly what she felt during those years. Childhood wonderment, first rebellion, and then maturing. In the end, every event in her life was wrapped perfectly to leave you satisfied. And that is precisely the definition of a good book.
It's so odd, how mesmerized I was with this story. I can't even explain why -- it's rather old-fashioned, with those hints of realizations that some characters follow ... but others don't, despite yearning, because they're smart or because they're following "proper" rules of relationships.
At one point, I felt so afraid, another so angry, when the truth is I never cared much for the characters nor their personalities, personhood.
Woah this was awesome. Flowery prose, gushing with tenderness and angst. I really liked this book, it’s a coming of age story, I’m guessing semi-autobiographical? Sentimental, not a single wasted sentence, stream of consciousness. I thought this was great, almost nothing happens but I felt endeared and engaged the entire time.
Did not hold up read at least 3 times as a teen so i must have seen something in at. As adult, found it irritating and could not wait to finish. In fact got rid of the paperback copy I’d kept for 40?? years.
