This well illustrated book advertised itself as the first work in English to trace the history of castles from ancient Greek fortresses through the 20th Century. It offers more than 300 photographs and plan drawings (mostly in black-and-white) that explain castle development chronologically over the centuries. Although a few photos seem a bit over-exposed, most illustrations are high quality, and the text is both interesting and sensible. One theme of the book is to show how castle design continued to evolve in response to technological improvements in siege techniques, and the author illustrates these developments quite well.
