While the day belongs to humans, the night belongs to yokai, supernatural creatures that thrive on human fear. Caught between these worlds is Rikuo Nura. He's three-quarters human, but his grandfather is none other than Nurarihyon, the supreme commander of the Nura clan, a powerful yokai consortium. So, Rikuo is an ordinary teenager three quarters of the time, until his yokai blood awakens. Then Rikuo transforms into the future leader of the Nura clan, leading a hundred demons.
TONO MONOGATARI
The yokai Hagoromo-Gitsune continues her attack to break the eight seals of Hidemoto. If she succeeds, the entire city of Kyoto will be under her full control. To save the city, Rikuo and his newfound allies, other trainee yokai that he’s met in the city of Tono, will have to harness all the power they’ve learned and travel from the safety of Tono toward the ensuing fray in Kyoto!
Two storylines are followed in this volume. Rikuo is trained in Tono and gathers together faithful yokai who agree to come with him to the showdown in Kyoto. Meanwhile in Kyoto we are meeting Hagoromo-Gitsune, my favourite villain in this series so far. I hope she stays around for a while! We meet a lot of new yokai in this volume which is always fun. There is plenty of action both in Rikuo's training and in the havoc H-G is creating in Kyoto plus the storyline is furthered. We also get another glimpse into the background as the story is rounded out. Another fine volume in this stellar series.
literally the whol kyoto arc, that spreads across volumes of this thing kept me up all night thinking about what could happen next and this is prob my new favourite thing in the whole world
I love seeing how Rikuo has grown. He’s really becoming a leader. But I’m now worried about these new characters that were introduced. What happened to them?!

My Thoughts:
Things are heating up! Hagoromo-Gitsune and her bunch are killing onmyouji left and right and the Keikain families are in a panic. Three of the younger generation think they can take Hagoromo-Gitsune out, but they're no match at all. What will Yura, Ryuji and Mamiru do?
Meanwhile, Rikuo continues to master his use of the Fear and shows off a really good technique. Once he masters it, he leaves Tono and takes some of them with him back to Ukiyoe Town so he can tell his grandfather that he's going to Kyoto. Meanwhile, the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol is already in Kyoto and two of them are in trouble already! Sheesh!
It seems there's a little more to the story with regards to Hagoromo-Gitsune and the Nura family. Is she the one that killed Rikuo's father? Did it really happen right in front of him? There's much yet to learn.
Hagoromo-Gitsune is back with a vengeance in Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Vol. 9: Tono Monogatari. Resurrection must be a beauty miracle because Hagoromo-Gitsune is young and gorgeous. This HBIC is ruthless and seemingly unstoppable. I fear for Rikuo's safety when he finally comes face-to-face with her. This will be a battle I eagerly anticipate.
Thanks to the Tono yôkai, Rikuo's powers are strengthening. Rikuo seems to have another agenda for going to Kyoto besides helping Yura. His vendetta against Hagoromo-Gitsune is personal as we find out that he suspects her of killing his father.
It was fun seeing the partnership between the Tono and Nura clans. I have a feeling this team is going to whoop some serious ass. Their enemy is a force to be reckoned with. They will need all the help they can get, especially since she made mincemeat of the powerful onmyoji.
I hope Yura and her brothers jump into the action in the next volume. I can't wait to see Rikuo's years of rage finally come to a head in the battle against Hagoromo-Gitsune.

Okay the plot of Nura always feels a bit light to me like half the story isn't there but I think it has more to do with the fact I am not as well versed in the folklore as the Japanese. However the art is always freaking amazing and while my folkloric history of japan is low my art histoeybis not, and the artist really captures the spirt of ink block prints and ghoul art especially in this volume.
