In a savage world ruled by the pursuit of the most delicious foods, it's either eat or be eaten! While searching for the tastiest foods imaginable, Gourmet Hunter Toriko travels the world with his bottomless stomach, facing every beast in his way.
Toriko and company reach the freezing continent known as Ice Hell. There they face dangerous new beasts and an even more dangerous environment. And standing in the way of their getting the Century Soup is another powerful member of Gourmet Corp.!
The stakes are so high and since the fights aren't against any animals, you're actually rooting for one side of the battle. It's the first time so far in this manga that I've been scared off an enemy. Their robots were intimidating, but these guys are scary. Also the frozen atmosphere adds to the intensity. Also, poor penguins!!! I hate those guys!
Really loving Toriko so far!! Great art and love the characters so far and the fighting is pretty awesome! Can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!😻💪😁❤️❤️
Well, as if Grinpatch was not weird enough, the newly-introduced Bishoukukai Vice Chef Tommyrod is downright disgusting (and has very poor fashion sense). More deviations from the anime are spotted here, as the dark and violent nature of the Bishoukukai are made the highlight of this volume. While Tommyrod has perhaps an understandable ability, it really defies belief. I'm not about denying the possibility, but sheer quantity is just quite ridiculous. But other than that, a mysterious character has made an appearance, running into Zonge's group (seriously, what is the point of this guy? The running gag about his name and RPG references got old really fast) and also Komatsu.
Yay another fun adventure in this fun world + the character called Tommyrod creeps me hella out. Toriko volume 9 by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro get a 9.7/10 stars.
Either I'm getting too accustomed to the popular tropes of shonen manga, or this series just loves to wear its influences on its sleeves. - There's a lovable blow-hard buffoon that somehow fails upward a la Mr. Satan from DBZ or Buggy from One Piece. - Toriko himself is a big ol' powerhouse who loves to eat like Goku from DBZ but the whole idea of him shrugging off attacks through sheer muscle power alone gives off Kenshiro vibes from Fist of the North Star. And as bananas-bonkers as some superpowers go in the wide world of anime, it's kinda refreshing to know that most of the good guys just use ridiculously powerful martial arts again like early DragonBall or Ranma ½. - the good-natured alliances he has with the other Gourmet Hunters on this expedition remind me of the innumerable times DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, or even Pokemon has had their protagonists team up with people that were antagonistic at the least and straight up villains earlier.
Fun romp as the protagonists keep going towards ultimate soup, while pursued by unabashedly EVIL bad guys. JUSTICE FOR WALL PENGUINS THAT DID NOT DESERVE SUCH A BRUTAL & SENSELESS DEATH!!! AND IN FRONT OF THEIR BABY NONETHELESS!
Lots of cool stuff in here. A century soup with 100 different flavors that appears once a century in the frozen hell. Also, because this is all food related, one of the bad guys is a bug eater and has them crawl out of their mouth on command. Good adventure story.
