What an insightful book. This is the story of slavery from the eyes of a former slave. He tells it like it is (or rather like it was). His is not a pretty story. It is an eye-opening rendition of heart break and torture. Even though he lived in one of the better states for slavery, it was still slavery and still an unbearable condition. Families were still separated at the whim of the master. They were beaten for the least offense or for no offense at all. They were starved and given insufficient clothing and housing. It is not an easy book to read. It tells the story of a dark period in our history, a period that we should all be ashamed of. A period of government sanctioned horror. This is a very small book. I read the ebook.

As usual, it's always best to go straight to the source when you want to learn more about someone. Skip all the introductions, and go straight to the memoir, where you will learn so much, and truly hear Douglas' voice.

Would’ve felt more comfortable knowing the origins/backgrounds of the audiobooks reader, expect slurs to be said, and sad sentiments to be shared. Overall and outstanding telling of the life of the late activist and abolitionist; Frederick Douglas.

I listened to this on audio. I'm not sure of the edition, but it had an excellent intro and end notes for back ground. I wasn't expecting to be so impressed by Douglas. He wrote this while still in his 20's and literate for only a few years. Yet, the book is written in a clear, unpretentious style that doesn't feel dated. I thought it would be simply one man's story, but Douglas skillfully manages to tell his story and make it representative of all the evils of slavery. He puts a face on slavery and manages to show how his experience can not be discounted as simply worse than the average.

I loved this book. Lately I have been reading alot about the time of slavery and this one was an amazing narrative. Fredrick Douglass, shows all conditions slaves underwent, without sugar coating it. When I read this narrative I realized how much slavery had an effect on people. It was cruel and this book enhanced my feelings on that. The narrative was sometimes hard to read because I didn't like to read about the conditions and things some of the slaves went through. good book about American history.
