Reads L to R (Western Style)
Meet the Winx Club, a group of beautiful fairies who fight evil using their unique magical powers! As they battle scary monsters and trouble-making witches, the girls become stronger fairies and closer friends.
Secrets of Alfea
To hone her fairy powers, Bloom enrolls at Alfea, a school for fairies in the world of Magix. But when wayward witches known as The Trix threaten to ruin a party at Alfea, it’s up to Bloom to save the day with some quick thinking!
Secrets Of Alfea PLOT: Bloom is struggling at Alfea in her magical studies. In particular transfiguration class. But on a brighter note, The Alfea School For Fairies will be throwing a dance to welcome the guys from Red Mountain to kick off the school year. But in a Cinderella moment, alas Bloom has nothing to wear to the ball. While discovering a magical storeroom with tons of beautiful-self adjusting gowns she also discovers a few uninvited guests (Icy, Darcy, and Stormy) who have plans of their own to make the dance memorable. Replacing the Red Mountain guys gifts with ones of their own. Now it's up to Bloom to not only navigate the basement's labyrinth maze and stop the Witch's plot but make it back in time for the dance in her stunning new dress.
MY THOUGHTS: This issue gave a little more. I also LOVED the twist of the magical basement. Of course, Alfea would have a magical basement with a collection of dresses that look like they're in frames like stacks of photographs. And since Bloom's dress is the center of the story, I can say that the dress is HOT! It's VERY SEXY! And she wears it well. In fact, it's my favorite of all of the fairies. I loved both versions. I loved the halter style as well as the off the shoulder look. But all these dresses are very daring. Very revealing. Some of them show mid-riff. Some are cut out. And I'm wondering now is Alfea a high school. (Random thought). The dresses aren't inappropriate, but they're pretty sexy for high school girl's dresses. I did overall like them all. I liked Flora's green, ruffled, floral, piece. And how original it was to have the bottom look like it was made of actual leaves. I also liked Techna's high collared two piece belly-baring purple outfit. The only one I wasn't crazy about was Stella's outfit. The lines at the bottom just didn't work for me. It would have been more flattering without. Even though we don't get a lot of magic and no transformations in this issue, it's cleaver how Bloom uses her brains (rather than her powers) to outsmart the witch's, find her way back, AND turn an accident into her stunning debut and capture the heart of one of the Red Mountain guys (whose name we don't yet get). I think that send's a very powerful message about Bloom as a character. She's a strong even without her magic! The eggs (presents) from the guys were charming. I'm just a little surprised and disappointed that the duck wasn't in this issue. He tickles me and is the cutest little thing how he annoys Icy. The juxtaposition of the transformation teacher (WizGiz)'s class didn't work in this issue. It was ill-placed and didn't fit in where they stuck it. It would have been better placed in the beginning of the issue or when Bloom's dress transformation took place. I also don't remember the Witch's trapping themselves into an avalanche in the episode which may have been another well-planned twist. Another good fit for the issue was the assignment at a school of Witch's to submit plans on how to foil the good guy's party. Though if I were the principal I probably would have taken it a step further & not just had them submit the plans, but actually carry them out and see whose was the best. Can you just imagine all the chaos if ALL the upperclassman would have been competition for the highest grade? But other than that just as in the last issue, the illustrations were GORGEOUS! Big, Bright, Bold and in your face!
It’s honestly better than the first. They changed it so it’s not exactly like the show. Which for me made it more interesting because I didn’t know what was going to happen.
I avoided this at first, because the female characters dress like porn stars. Last week, however, I decided it might be a good way to teach my five-year-old girl what's okay to wear and what's not. (You know, point out the outfits that weren't modest.) Bad idea. I couldn't even read the book because all three of my kids kept pointing out bare midriffs and busting-out busts. Seriously, it's on every page. This graphic novel is aimed at tween girls and it portrays young women in the most unrealistic, hyper-sexualized way I've ever seen. You thought Barbie was bad? These girls' waists are the same size as their wrists. I recommend this to any parent who wants their daughter to hate her own body.
(But other than that, the story was mildly interesting and the art was eye-catching...especially if you're a pedophile.)
I voluntarily read and reviewed this advanced copy from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Winx Club was a big staple of my childhood and I loved watching it on Saturday mornings. The clothing, theme song, and girl power radiating through my television screen every week was instrumental. This new comic series helps bring that nostalgia back to life. It's not quite the same magic as the show, but it makes a valiant attempt. This second volume, Friends, Monsters, and Witches!, was cute but not as exciting as the first one. The first story was unnecessary as it just repeated what happened in the first book just with different angles. Perhaps it was a recap for those who failed to read the initial volume? I wish we got to learn more from the secondary fairies like Musa or Flora instead of just focusing on Bloom all the time.
These books are fun and exciting, but they can definitely dive into the outrageous rather easily. The zaniest part of this collection was when Bloom was imprisoned in a tree by the witches. There were multiple panels of an elm tree screaming for help. It was a very silly situation, but I was willing to overlook it when the beefcakes from the Specialist school teamed up with Winx Club to help rescue her. I'm a simple lady with simple tastes. I'm eager to continue reading this series because it's a blast from the past and it's very easy to read. Let's hope the next issue has more Friends, Monsters, and Witches!
So far I like this series and I'm totally going to read these out of order because my library didn't have some, but even though I won't really know what is going on I will probably still really like these books.
I enjoyed being able to read Winx Club in a manga/comic book format. However, as an avid follower of the television series and book series, I did find several discrepancies within the storyline of this series. There were several details within this story that were quite different in comparison to the original television series, and I found that to be quite annoying while reading. Overall, I felt that they did a great job with the illustrations and storyline (in general) and I look forward to any new editions that may come out in the future.
